We…read moreparked at a local parking garage on California and 19th St ( $20 for max hours) within walking distance to the historic Colorado Building. Also available is metered street parking. We had a reservation for the collection at 1:45 so we ate at the Tuscany Coffee & Deli (on the 16th St mall) for lunch and while we waited for our appointment. Initially we were confused about the collection hours and we left a VM and emailed but no response to see if we could go to the collection before our scheduled appointment (which we did anyway). A employee explained the appointment was to tell how many people would attend at a certain time. We arrived to find the building doors were locked but luckily a gentleman who works there let us in and also let us into the elevator to the 5th floor where we were greeted by an employee who explained about the visit. We were free to roam the entire 5th floor of each office at our leisure (only saw one other couple) that held exhibits from contemporary artists from around the world. There were information in the rooms providing brief descriptions of each exhibit. Some of the items were interactive. The collection of art and items here is definitely very eclectic, but is also very thought provoking at the same time. This collection is definitely much nicer than most free collections that I've seen in other cities, and I would have no problem paying a small fee to visit it again. As the rooms were not busy during my visit, I had the opportunity to slowly enjoy the art - this was good as some areas have quite a bit of items to see in a small area. Overall, definitely worth a visit if you're in Denver and enjoy art -- especially unusual and creative art.

Spark is the oldest cooperative gallery in Denver (1979) and features many accomplished artists at…read moremid- to late career. There's no particular theme to the selection of artists and I find the shows widely variable in quality. Spark has bounced around to many locations, but recently moved from their long-time spot at 9th and Santa Fe to this fabulous new venue, directly across the plaza from the main entrance to the Denver Art Museum. The gallery has taken advantage of this high visibility with extended hours and is now open every afternoon from Friday through Tuesday. The gallery is elegant and well-designed for the display of a substantial amount of work. There's usually something for everyone and the space is well-worth a visit. One of the artists is always there and they are happy to talk about their work.

It is spacious, has several smaller studios in it, and has mixed mediums. One of the things I remember especially about this gallery use of oils on Masonite by one artist, which created a very earthy abstract theme. Quite cool, but naturally pricey. Nonetheless, when I noted to my lady friend that this place was better than most of the galleries we've seen so far, she relied to me that the people in here looked exactly like the people she would see in swank-ass SF galleries: not interested in the art in the least but in networking, kissing-ass, and trying to get laid. Pretty harsh perhaps, but there was a ring of truth to this fact as I looked around. I'm not sure why I felt this way in this gallery especially, but it was there so....no 5 for you

Leon began life in August 2011 as a commercial gallery, but has morphed into a nonprofit arts…read moreorganization as of July 2018. It continues to present regular art exhibitions, but also offers all sorts of intimate musical events, fashion, lectures, poetry, book launches, and use as a charming event space. The building dates to the 1890s and has served many functions including a flower shop, a yoga studio, the first location of Denver Free University, and a photography studio. It's conveniently located in the heart of the Uptown neighborhood. Parking can be a little tricky, but there is usually a spot to find within a block or two and if you've got parking karma--right in front. I'd call the art that Leon presents eclectic. Some of it I like, some I hate, but it's always thought-provoking and occasionally inspiring. Leon tries to find emerging and underrepresented artists, but also provides a space for established artists to experiment in a way that's difficult at more commercial galleries. Leon's motto is, "Outliers Change the World," and long-time director, Eric Nord, strives to do that. Leon is an interesting part of the Denver arts scene and is worth many visits.

The location makes it an excellent stop after dinner and a day around town or before a night out at the local pubs. Walking in, you'll find a cozy gallery perfectly suited for smaller exhibitions. It's small size affords good, friendly communication between the patrons and allows for conversation with the artists. The brick walls are an idyllic backdrop for the different works of art rotating through. While it's slated as a venue for emerging artists, some are already well on their way. This venue has a great location, brings in quality local works of art, and will make for a fun evening out.

Robert Anderson has been a long-time Denver gallerist with a unique focus on fine art photography…read more He unfortunately closed the gallery at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. A new space recently became available just a couple of doors east of the previous location and Robert seized the opportunity to reopen in April 2025. The new gallery is a bit smaller than in the past, but an old and tired storefront has been thoroughly remodeled to provide a clean and elegant gallery space. There's a very nice mix of historic and contemporary photography plus a few non-photographic fine art pieces that have caught Robert's eye. He has excellent taste and the refreshed gallery is well worth a visit.

The NoBo (North Broadway) Art District is Boulder's only official arts district. It dates back to a…read more2009 revival of the First Fridays arts open house tradition and now encompasses more than 350 professional artists and creative businesses--mostly in the North Broadway and Lee Hill corridors. Administrative offices are at the NoBo on the Corner location which also includes work, meeting, and exhibition space. The Bus Stop gallery is a formal exhibition location while the NoBo Art Center is a more casual work, meeting, and exhibition spot. A group of 20 to 30 studios, galleries, and related businesses is open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. There are regular exhibits at the three NoBo gallery spaces (Art Center, Bus Stop, and On the Corner) plus the independent East Window gallery. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is planning to construct a large new building plus related facilities at Broadway and Violet Avenue which will be the North Boulder Creative Campus. Construction is estimated to start in late 2027 with completion by late 2029. The Art District is actively working on the streetscape with sculptures, murals, lighting, and other installations in progress. NoBo also curates members' art in local businesses. There's a monthly podcast, a newsletter, a book with member profiles and NoBo information, a calendar of events, and a comprehensive Web site. North Broadway was an underutilized part of town only a few years ago, but is becoming a vibrant area filled with modern housing, new businesses, and a rising arts scene. It should really be impressive over the next few years.

D'art, I think, is the newest co-op art gallery in town and it is one of my favorites. It is just…read morecelebrating its seventh anniversary (opened August 1, 2019). The members have been carefully selected and are all accomplished artists in mid to late career. The work shown is always of extemely high quality. The facility was created for previous gallery/studio owners and D'art has made the most of it. The main gallery at the east side of the complex shows work from the 27 member artists plus the occasional outside show. The separate space in the far east corner is the East Gallery which is available for 4-week rentals and shows a variety of work. The other large gallery at the west side is the home of D'art 360, what I would call the associate members. Again, this is used for rotating shows of work by those 30 artists. The adjacent North Gallery has been used lately as a permanent display space with a sample of work by each associate artist. But wait, there's more! Go through a hallway north of the main (east) gallery, past the (nice) restrooms, and you'll find five studio spaces plus the D'art Collection, a curated, permanent gallery of the main co-op members' work. The members of this gallery are serious artists and the work shown is always original and interesting. The prices are reasonable for original work. Their openings are always worth a visit.

For that moment in my personal history, I always take the opportunity to swing through whenever I find myself down that direction for any reason. The gallery that was has long since changed hands a couple of times, yet always attracts some good shows. Over the last several months, I have found myself back at this place twice now as a destination. I haven't done that once for this gallery space in over a decade. Artist-owned and operated as a co-op in this iteration, it seems someone was taking notes. The main showroom is still in the front, with the full windows facing the intersection. There are still private, working studio spaces in the back, but the layout has been shuffled a bit. From the outside, the changes are subtle. They have fixed, open hours from Thursday through Sunday, which is a standout in comparison to other galleries in the area. What was the backdoor entrance and an empty corridor is now utilized as functional space for a satellite gallery. The main gallery and this secondary gallery have representation from co-op members. The range of work offers a wide variety of media and artistic voices. There's a smaller "featured" type gallery off the main gallery, which rotates solo shows. All in all, they've really gotten all they can out of the space, tastefully. So, if you're looking for a place that's not the cramped and crazy of First Friday, get on their mailing list or check their calendar when you're planning a night out. After all, this is the place D'ART.

Not only was his work AMAZING (seriously, go check it out next week at First Friday!) but the whole building was really cool. It was a smaller studio, but it was beautiful with half of the walls having exposed bricks. I looked through the other sections and all of the other artists that were featured had very amazing pieces of work. Everything was vibrant, funky, original, eccentric, and beautiful. I've been through a lot of the galleries in the area before, but this is definitely my favorite!

The best evening to go is on 3rd Fridays - the gallery is open late and the crowds are nothing like crazy 1st Fridays! The artists in the gallery are up-and-coming, so the art is exceptional and it's affordable!
