I am a new member and I LOVE it! The classes are SO FUN AND HELPFULL. The pool and jacuzzi are awesome! Great place!

Well I hope this replaces my old review which was during the time when they had no hot water in the showers. So this is a very nice place and considering how upscale it is surrounded by parks and very nice views right across from the airport in Santa Maria or orcutt, It's a bargain and a half. January gets half price membership fee, In the monthly fees are well worth it and adjusted for families and if you're over an age I don't know. And now the Hot water is back on. Staff is very friendly they have every feature for families that you would ever want. They have all the classes you would ever want. They have tiny dry and wet saunas. I have some great outdoor areas fantastic views I think I mentioned that, but I didn't mention the soccer field which can be rented but it's basically for kids leagues three to 12. And it's particularly nice it's completely enclosed and has artificial turf. They have a lap pool and a jacuzzi off to the side and four weight areas and two gyms with half court, a couple of fully enclosed handball courts which I love. One and a half pickleball courts I'm dying to try that once I get back into reasonable balance. It may be my good looks and personality but people are very friendly. And it's a great place if you got anything going for you to meet someone. So after one tour and 8 days later one try out which isn't much I'm giving it five stars. And it's my favoritest gym I think that I've ever joined maybe the Santa Barbara Y was close. read more

The pool is wonderful! There's a women's locker room right near it and you can swim laps from about 6:00 pm on. I love the way the staff is and you just show your card to the reader and you're in. They also have racquet ball , basketball, free weights, and child care. read more

I love this YMCA. The staff is so helpful, especially Aida at the front desk! She is always smiling and in a good mood and makes me feel welcomed when coming in. Additionally, I love their outdoor exercise area! They have great exercise equipment and classes!! If you go make sure to try Mary's cycle class. Great for the family and those who want more friends and support in your life. It's not just a gym; it's an extension of your home if you want it to be. Each YMCA is different and raises its own support so one may have more resources than another. That's why I am proud to see all the upgrades over the years of this Y. New equipment everywhere, new paint, updated flooring, and theme of colors. When the jacuzzi failed, it took some time to fix but it wasn't because the management was absent or lazy. The parts took time to get right but it got done. The place is regularly cleaned, the staff is friendly, and they are open to feedback. They offer plenty of classes, a nice outdoor pool, racquetball courts, a half indoor basketball court (with regular meetings), and newly updated cardio and weight rooms. I dropped my one year old off at the Kids Corner. I told them she recently started walking and needs a bit more supervision because of this. When I went to pick her up, I found out she had been hit in the head with a scooter after she fell in front of another child that was riding it. No one called me or anything to notify me that my child was literally hit in the head with a scooter. She has a giant red mark on her temple and it's sensitive to touch. It happened at 915 AM and I didn't pick her up until after 10 AM. When asked what happened, no one could really explain it other than "it happened so fast" leading me to believe no one was even watching her. There was no apology or other explanation as to why my child got a head injury and no one called me. There were only 3 adults for over 25 children. They have playpens and didn't even have the younger kids in playpens separated from the older active kids. I don't trust them with the safety of my child anymore. read more

I've been at the Santa Maria valley YMCA for 28 years. My children grew up here and attended all of the programs the Y offers. The evolution of the Y has been a testament to this community's support and to the Y being the hub of our community. I am not sure on the facilities policy on allowing under aged children to work out in the free weight area. I am not against the idea of younger kids working out, but there should be an age limit of 17 yrs and up. I have been a member for the past 6 years and I have noticed over the past year allowing kids in the free weight area has become laxed. No adult supervision to monitor how they behave. A group of kids with volunteer shirts on were all over the place grabbing free weights off the racks and wandering around lifting them in the gym area. I for one had to avoid running into them and personally this is a safety concern. A young child should not be left unattended and left with the responsibility as an adult to respect their surroundings and other adults in the gym. This is a potential injury waiting to happen to the child and to an adult that can be injured from an inexperienced weight lifter. A cap on the age must be implemented to avoid the irresponible actions of these under aged kids. The age of 13 yrs is ridiculous and I find that to be too immature to be respectful and responsible for others working out and avoid hurting someone or themselves for that matter. They should have an appropriate trainer or a program should be in development to assist kids in this age group how to properly lift. They should not be left alone and taking advantage of an opportunity to grow because they are wearing a volunteer shirt. The shirt is an earned representation of the facility and if misused affects the overall reputation of the gym. Safety concerns should also be observed on the use of the hand ball courts. I have witnessed 3 under aged children hitting the ball without safety glasses. Another preventable injury waiting to happen. Hopefully, things will change for the better and cause any grief and distress to other gym members to wanting to leave. read more

I've been a member of this Y for 9 months now and love it. I have utilized the childcare camps and group classes to bring more activity to my family's routine. I love the support of staff and the way that other members encourage one another. My child enjoyed the camps over summer and I appreciated hat there were multiple sessions that catered to various interests that allowed her to try something new. Group classes are structured so that there is something available at any time of the day I can make it in. I also love that I can bring my child to some of them. What a great way to incorporate family fitness! I've given yoga, step, and cardio/strength/mind a try. The ease of the website shows which classes are scheduled and despite your fitness level you're welcome and encouraged in even the most challenging class. read more

I should really stop reviewing from ellipticals, but here we go again. I am violently fighting that holiday weight gain, also while one upping those new years resolution exercisers. So while i am here for a week, this is my gym. It is a friendly gym. They have a pool, hot tub, sauna, 2 basketball courts inside and 1 or 2 outside. There is a skate park and a free weight room. There is a room for the fitness classes and a big room with the cardio equipment and weight machines....Whatever they're called. The people are nice and i appreciate that it's a humble gym--no showing off here. People of all ages and fitness levels work hard here and are nice about it. I believe you also get a few personal training sessions with membership? BUT THE BEST PART--there are those old people who are in really really good shape. One is currently shaming me on the treadmill. Props, sir. If i lived here still, i would make this my gym. read more

I've been going to this gym for about three years in the afternoons, and I like it. It is a pretty big facility, and it has everything I need to stay in shape. The cardio room is large, and the equipment is rather new and in good shape. It is adequately ventilated unless it is really crowded. The weight room is considerably smaller, but there is an outside portion that greatly increases the overall size; I often utilize this area if it gets crowded inside. There is also basketball, racquetball, fitness classes, a pool, and a sauna, so there is not much more that I could ask for. Kudos as well for the always friendly staff. read more

Used a family members guest pass to check out this gym . The Zumba instructor was great , I really enjoyed the class . After the class I decided to do a little extra and work on the elliptical. Too bad the machine room is a super crammed , claustrophobic area . Everyone is working out right on top of each other . The room smells like sweat , and there's definitely not enough machines for everyone. I asked about membership prices for sh*ts and giggles .... $70 down payment , plus $37 a month ... NO THANKS !!!! Misinformed, we were hoping to take our toddler to have some fun in the pools. Paul center is our closest go to but was closed for construction so our only option was YMCA. We've never visited this facility so we called to ask if they had an area for our childs age they said yes, to our surprise their was not. We weren't even able to use it yet due to swimming lessons being taken which wasn't the problem, we simply could've been informed about it. I mean on a nice hot day the last thing we wanted was to wait under the sun to use the pools especially with a toddler. Fortunately we were able to get a refund and left, first and last visit. read more

I used to go to summer camp here when I was younger so it's nice to still be able to go back as a teen. I use the Y to play basketball or racquetball. I also use it to swim with my friends. My wife and I moved to the area 9 months ago and joining this Y is one of the best things we have done to become a part of the community. The Y seems to be as much a family as a place to work out. Whether you are a serious athlete or someone just trying to get moving again you can find a place here. We have taken many classes and the instructors are very supportive without putting on pressure. Everyone is encouraged to do their best and modifications are always offered for those with physical limitations. What a wonderful staff! Even the members are very friendly! I also took a few classes and found them challenging but motivating. The weightlifting equipment is also in great shape and I really enjoy the outdoor lap pool. I don't live in the area, but I always purchase a day pass when I'm visiting. read more

I love the Y! I have been coming to the Y for a few months and have used quite a bit of the services they offer. the group classes are by far my favorite part. They offer so many and they can be modified to your skill level. The machines are well maintained and very clean. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to get fit. read more

We just finished 5 weeks of swimming lessons for our daughter. I was very dissatisfied with the class. My daughter is 14 months old and we use to do swim in another location and they taught my daughter so many techniques. We wanted to try another location. This class was literally just bouncing up and down in the pool with Mom/dad. At the beginning of class it was about 10 kids with their parents by the end it was half of the kids. I didn't want to finish the class but we had paid for it so we did. One instructor told the parents what they should do next but never demonstrated. Good thing we had done swimming with my daughter since she was 3 months and knew what she meant. But not everyone knew what she was talking about. It's so sad and I guess that's what we get for paying what we paid for. I rather pay a higher price and know that I'm going to get what I paid for... I have now been to a handful of YMCAs across the country. This facility is by far, the worst weight room. It takes forever to find the weights you need because they are scattered all over the room. I was there yesterday and no one, except me, was re-racking plates. So, a good deal of the time I spent there was on searching for the plates I needed. I'm not sure why this is so rampant here. I stopped using the weight room completely about a year ago but decided it was too hot to train in my garage yesterday. The staff are very friendly, there are lots of classes and plenty of machines in the conditioning area. Literally, I have never been to another gym that is as messy and difficult to use than this weight room at this YMCA. The weight room gets 1 star but the staff and other areas balance it out. I would not pay for a membership here based on the weight room conditions. My husband added me to his membership. read more

This pertains more to the children's classes that are offered. I love the ideas of offering a variety of sports, but after having experienced a few of these with my kid, I think there can be more improvement. If the YMCA is going to hire people to teach sports, or referee sports, then those employees should know what they are doing. The girl that oversaw our classes and games didn't seem to care, or even keep 5-year-old children organized. She was there and clearly didn't care. At one point I went up to her and asked if she needed help with the kids in the line, and she was totally spacey and did nothing. The same girl refereed soccer games, and she very unfairly was giving the ball to the other team when they shouldn't have had it, later to find out that she knew one of the players on that team. I think it was her brother. Other than that, the idea of these sports for kids are great, but the workers need work. read more

I love it at the Y. Everything about it is great. I love the pool. I sure would like to see a small indoor therapy pool. My mom always complains that the water and wind is too cold. (I think it's fine). But I could get her to do her exercises in the pool more thoroughly if she was warmer. A small indoor therapy pool would make this Y perfect. read more

After having a lot of issues with new equipment and/or not enough of it and/or enough room, this place has turned it around. Still need more room and some more equipment, but they've addressed their concerns with members and made the slight increase in fees seem doable. read more

I've been going to the Santa Maria Ymca for many years and the community that is there is truly like a no other. They offer a wide range of classes with amazing fun instructors! The new outdoor functional fitness area is wonderful along with the beautiful outdoor pool. Member prices are totally reasonable. I would highly recommend giving this local gym a try. read more
