Some people jokingly refer to the University of Notre Dame as Catholic Disneyland. On Sundays, there are literally dozens of places on campus to go to Mass; every dorm has its own chapel; there are more priests walking around in their black suits than you've seen since the early 1980s, and all the famous campus landmarks associated with football (Touchdown Jesus, Fair Catch Corby, First Down Moses) are actually pieces of religious art. Well, if Notre Dame is Catholic Disneyland, then Santa Teresita is Catholic Disneyland for old folks. No, there aren't dozens of chapels on its little campus, but you can't visit without seeing at least one or two Carmelite nuns in their traditional habits (all-white habits if they're doing medical work), and although I've only visited four or five times, I've met at least two different priests here, and I never came for Mass or any other religious service. The religious who work and volunteer here simply love spending time with the residents, and it shows. I know about Santa Teresita because my then 100-year-old great aunt moved in for a month when her full-time caregiver was on vacation. My very religious aunt loved the setting, the nuns and priests, and especially the staff members. She couldn't say enough about how well everyone treated her, and even though she was determined to live out her days in her own home, she admitted that Santa Teresita wouldn't be a bad place to be if she needed to live here. That might not sound like a glowing endorsement, but coming from my aunt, who never would have dreamed of leaving her house, it was an encouraging sign of openness. Not long after her 102nd birthday, my aunt's caregiver retired, and my aunt moved in to Santa Teresita permanently. This time, she had a room on the second floor, close to the elevator, and I visited her five or six times. My mom was largely in charge of finances and making sure she had everything she needed, and my aunt was always telling my mom to bring chocolates and other little things to give to the staff members and the nuns. My aunt really took to and loved the people who worked here, and when I met the employees and volunteers when I would come to pick her up or bring her back, I could tell they took their jobs seriously and truly enjoyed my aunt's company. The grounds are lovely. All the residents live in two cottages separated by a cute courtyard. I've only been inside the newer cottage, but they both look very nice from outside. If you toured my aunt's cottage while no one was there, you would have no idea that this is an old-age home. It feels more like a modern apartment complex with many large, inviting common areas. When we would bring my aunt back to Santa Teresita at night after some social event, there were always at least a few people in one of the main shared areas watching a movie on the TV. In addition to residents, staff members and priests would sometimes be there, but it felt totally natural, as if friends were just watching a movie together. I don't know many of the specifics, but I know that Santa Teresita offers various group activities for the residents, including field trips and on-site parties. At last year's Halloween party, my aunt won an award for having the best costume. Administratively, my mom dealt mostly with Sister Carmen, whom I only met once but who plays a big part in my whole family's estimation of Santa Teresita. She's a high-energy crackerjack marked by her deep commitment to her residents and making sure everything is running properly. My aunt's needs changed over the time she was at Santa Teresita, and Sister Carmen was always patient with and helpful to my mom in terms of assessing and changing levels of care. My aunt passed away peacefully in her sleep at Santa Teresita this past February. She was 102-years-old and had lived a full, enchanted kind of life. At her funeral, I got to meet Sister Carmen and some of the other employees and volunteers who cared for my aunt. She had left a deep impression on them, and despite the fact that the funeral was very far away from Duarte, a lot of people from Santa Teresita came to pay their respects. They also had a separate memorial service for my aunt at Santa Teresita. Rehabilitation and old-age homes can and often do feel so depressing. Nothing at Santa Teresita ever felt that way. When my father-in-law needed a new home and additional care to live out his remaining years, my wife reviewed and evaluated facilities throughout Los Angeles and local counties. She recommended Santa Teresita to her dad based upon what the services they offered, the quality of the facility, and the fact that the current residents seemed happy to be there. Her dad was a fiercely independent man who liked what he liked just the way he liked. Santa Teresita is one of those rare examples where the expectations were met and exceeded. Yes, there are nuns at Santa Teresita and they do offer Catholic services for those who want to participate. However, the nuns do not push their religion or belief systems. The residents benefit from these wonderful women who have dedicated their lives to the service and care of others. The nuns along with the caregivers pay so much attention and care to the people that live there. Everyone who works at Santa Teresita is friendly and doesn't hesitate to make you feel welcome. They never forgot that the residents are individuals with different needs and wants. I was surprised how many times the workers went out of their way to cater to specific requests. If you have a loved one who is need of assisted care, please make the time to visit Santa Teresita you will not be disappointed. My wife and I have been so impressed by the quality of care provided, the commitment to their residents, and what we have received; that we started to volunteer for the special resident event parties. My grandfather has been the primary caregiver for my grandmother for the last 30 years, and Santa Teresita Manor is the ONLY place that he trusts to care for his wife. We managed to get her into their care days before the Covid-19 epidemic froze all new admissions to long term care facilities. FYI, all staff and residents have both vaccines. Care and Commitment to your Loved ones: First off, you don't need to be Catholic to be welcomed there. Their service is to all regardless of faith.  Before admission to the Manor, one of the nuns sits with your family and discusses the needs of your loved one and the family. It covered way more than I would ever have imagined, and covered many things that would not have occurred to us.  It really helped to calm a lot of the anxiety and fears that my grandfather had been suffering from. They toured us around the facility and my grandfather even became a bit excited!  The facility was very sanitary in appearance and odor (super important to me), more intimate and less "hospital" feeling in decor, nicely kept up, and perfect for my grandmother!  It had great facilities, and the residents did not appear to be depressed and unhappy (I've been elsewhere and not had the same experiences). The nuns at Santa Teresita joined their order due to their passion for caring for the physical, mental, and spiritual care for our loved ones. I can absolutely attest to their care in all 3 categories! Both my grandfather and I have noticed a steady upswing in my grandmother's mood since entering Santa Teresita (sometimes you can miss signs of depression when you're living with a situation for so long).  Their service and commitment is outstanding. These nuns and caregivers are outstanding in their care and attentiveness. They call any time there is any change of any kind in your loved one! Whether it be doctor visit results, +/- 3 lbs weight change, diet change recommendations, EVERYTHING! Response to Covid-19: Santa Teresita had possibly the fastest response to the Covid-19 epidemic in all of California. They immediately locked down and implemented the strictest of policies to ensure the safety of their staff and those under their care (including use of completely separate facilities and staff for those patients under quarantine). We get emails once or twice weekly with updates with general updates, plus Covid-19 positivity rates at the facility. I can happily state that there have been NO NEW CASES for over a month now! IN ADDITION, ALL STAFF AND RESIDENTS HAVE RECEIVED BOTH VACCINE SHOTS!!! Santa Teresita had gotten all their patients and staff BOTH shots before I had even managed to get ONE shot for my grandfather!  Outstanding! Visitations and facilitating communication: This has been the key to keeping my grandparents going during the last year. My grandmother is a quadriplegic, and on a daily basis she has someone who assists her in using Facetime with my grandfather. They also help her go through her emails and letters and read them aloud to her.  Visitations have depended on the state policies and positivity rates, but recently we have been able to schedule regular, in person, socially distanced visits with 2 or fewer people present at a time (the rest wait outside and swap placed). This has been an awesome development, and one we have all been thrilled about! Santa Teresita gets two thumbs up, 5 stars, and 10/10 from our family! read more

I wish I could put a zero if it was available. Please see pics below My mother stayed at that horrible nursing home. She was there at Santa Teresita nursing home for 9 months. She was diagnosed pancreatic cancer. In the beginning of her stay there everything was fine she was able to walk eat do all her toiletries. She needed no real care yet. What the facility states is not the truth. Most people have dementia. Their was only one CNA ( certified nursing assistant) and one LVN for most of days and nights. It look liked they were warehousing the demented patients. Their idea of socializing and keeping them occupied, was to take them out of their rooms, put them in wheel chairs and let them loose in the hallway. This is horrible to see them like this! The food was given in small quantities. Because my mom had pancreatic cancer, she developed Diabetes. Her glucose was going up and going down. She was already thin as it was and they couldn't keep it in check and the so called "nurses," were not even a real RN's they were only LVN's Early on this male LVN who worked the night shift gave my mom an over dose of insulin by accident that almost killed her. They were trying to bring her blood sugar up. It took a long time before they got it up. She chest pain ( an insulin overdose can give you a heart attack and kill you on the spot) She finally recover after a couple of hours. I was bringing in food for her.I stayed with my mom almost everyday. The nursing home doctor would come only once a month. When my mother's legs started to have edema (swell up) he didn't even come to examine my mom. He ordered a medication called Lasix to bring down her edema. He gave a regular dose which is usually 20mg. But because he didn't examine her or check her blood pressure, he didn't even know that her blood pressure was low, so he should have not given her that dose. It lowered her blood pressure even more of course and she began to have chest pain and was almost at the point of having a heart attack. Had it not been for this LVN, Nick who was more knowledgeable than the others, gave her nitroglycerin or she would have died. At that point I knew I had to hire 24 hrs nursing care service. So hopefully they wouldn't do anymore harm to her. Also as my mom became more ill, the nursing home staff were supposed to feed he. But they did not have the staff. So she may have starve to death if I did not provide with the home health care I hired a private doctor. My mom needed a real doctor. Let me tell you I payed $35,000.00 a month. Including stanza Teresita which was a whopping $7,500.00 per month! Because she could no longer sit up or move around she developed a huge bed sore! The nursing staff are not suppose to let that happened!!! The nursing facility is supposed to provide prevention for this. They are supposed turn her from side to side , but it was to late she had already developed it. Then with more of their neglect, her arms and legs started to contract in other words they became stiff and started to deform. This is because no physical therapy was available to stretch her arms an legs to keep them nimble. I found out after, that this is 101 bed care. I'm am so angry at them for neglecting her of care that should have been provided to her! Later the order was given to change my mother's position every two hours. I and the caregiver had to call the staff or go out into the unit to try and get someone to help reposition her. This was a two person task. So if no one was around, we had to it. This happens a lot. read more

Our mother is a fiercely independent over 90 year old woman. She always told us if she couldn't live in her home independently she would go to Santa Teresita. An acute event happened to her requiring a stay at The Manor on the Santa Teresita campus. The staff were so easy to work with in getting her transferred from Huntington to The Manor for Rehab. My mother LOVES it! In fact so much so, that she is soon to transfer to The Cottages for Assisted Living. We have been trying to have her move there for years until nature forced the issue. As a health care provider, I've been so impressed with the level of care, compassion and professionalism the staff has shown. They are strict with Covid precautions which gives our family much comfort in knowing their primary goal is the protection of their elderly population. Our mother has a strong Catholic background and finds much comfort in being with the Sisters and having access to the Sacraments. The staff are fabulous and kind and easy to work with. But you don't have to be religious to be a client! They welcome all with open arms. In the short time our mother has been at The Manor she is stronger, happier and motivated. My mother was in the Manor in 2019 until she was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2021. We discharged her and brought mom home to live out her remaining days with her family. My mother was 99 and a half when she passed away. During her stay at Santa Teresita my mother was taken care of so carefully and lovingly by the nuns and nursing staff. The care she received didnt end with mom's physical needs. They also provided her spiritual needs by praying the rosary with her daily and bringing her Holy Communion and taking her to Mass before the Covid shut down. There is a Chapel on the premises called St. Joseph's Chapel. I was here with a very large group of parishioners from St. Peter Chanel Church (Hawaiian Gardens, California) to participate and witness the final profession of vows to the Congregation of Carmelite Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Los Angeles. This was the first ever profession to the religious life that I have witnessed. It was a solemn and joyous occasion. Beautiful grounds and updated. There is now a new Assisted living facility called the Shepherd Cottages. Also a Child care center adjacent to it. Sadly, there is a nearly empty building that was once the Santa Teresita Hospital. It is no longer in service, fallen victim to difficult economic times. read more

I came here six months ago.Not willingly because I wanted to go back to my wonderful apartment. My relatives said I needed assisted help and after they had done research found that Santa Teresita fit the bill. I now agree wholeheartedly. My room, bath and kitchenette are quality and affordable. Not only are the grounds and pathways lovely, the food is good, the caretakers are wonderful and I am free to do as I please. My Mom was adamant she would never go to a care facility and wanted to be at her home to the end. Sadly, her health declined significantly but luckily she agreed only to go to Santa Teresita because of the Carmelite Sisters. It was absolutely the right decision. The sisters and all of the staff were welcoming, accommodating and went above and beyond to care for my mother and attend to me and my family members. Due to her very bad health, my Mom passed. She was at Santa Teresita for about 2 weeks. A precious family member was moved from a hospital to the skilled care unit called the Manor. I cannot tell you how outstanding the care of the patients, family members is and respect for each other is so apparent each day and in every way. After all, the staff and Sisters are fulfilling a VOCATION not an OCCUPATION. This is the summation of treatment ,care and love displayed toward all that come in contact with the staff and angelic Sisters. They are not just administrators of a facility, but work daily with the patients. Our family member could never have been comfortable in any place without the sisters that she had known for years. My sister was admitted to Santa Teresita Manor, which is the skilled nursing part of this facility. She had fractured her femur in a fall, had surgery, and now I was looking for a place that would be safe, clean, and offer quality care, I toured five places that offered skilled nursing. I work in healthcare and the tours I asked for were thorough. Santa Teresita felt different from the moment I entered through the front doors. The lovely Nuns looked like angels as they walked through the hallways visiting with the patients. The nursing staff was exceptionally nice. The facility was clean, with lovely gardens to take my sister out to so we could have lunch together. The physical and occupational therapists were top notch. The Carmelite Nuns seem to set the atmosphere of this facility. They are kind and caring as are the staff. My sister has been there since May 25, 2022, and she is happy, and is receiving wonderful care. Let me add one side note, we aren't even Catholic. The care given here is of the highest example of Christian values no matter what faith you or your loved one is. read more

As she continues to age, the only place she wants to spend her days is at Santa Teresita. It is the place she feels most safe and at home. I am very saddened to put such a negative review. This is regarding skilled nursing facility. They became judgmental on decisions I made for my Mom that she requested if she ever was in long term care. When asking for referral to Hospice it became a six day challenge of repeating the request to multiple people ending with a sobbing and screaming request which was granted but not in their facility. I contacted a Hospice on my own and they did everything to move my mother to another facility. I'm Catholic and so is my Mom worse experience I've ever endured with a medical facility. read more

Worst SNF ever. Went against pt and family wishes to not prolong impending death. Sneakily forced meds, food, and denied pain meds regarding comfort care. DON was condescending, accusatory, and went against MD's orders hiding behind the "Catholic" way which basically promotes prolonged suffering, helplessness, and being forced to live out a miserably painful existence while they collect your money. My father spent his last two years at the manor. I mentioned once to him that I was sorry I was not able to have him stay with me in our home since we could not give him the care he needed. He responded by saying this was his home and he would not want to leave. That is the Manor. It is not a business but a home where the residents are loved, comforted, and taken care of by only those who have the best in mind for them. The Sisters are an inspiration to not only the residents but those who come to visit them. you will become part of a community and family if you select Santa Teresita. Needless to say the health care and attention they receive is out standing. The facility is not the most modern but it is kept to high standards. I do not usually write reviews but I would wholeheartedly recommend it if you are looking to make sure your loved one has a home. read more

What an experience!! My 89yr old Mother was released from Huntington Memorial Hospital, after a bad fall that broke the top of her femur, and the closest Rehab/Convalescent facility was GEM, of which both her Osteo doc and Primary Care physician visit. For those reasons we chose GEM. It was a nightmare!!! Not welcoming, nor clean, and the caregivers that first attended her were not thorough, and were rough and desensitized!! I am a former CNA/Home Health Aide and I could go on and on about the list of things that is seriously wrong with that place, which I observed in the less than 24 hours that my Mom was there. But, I will now tell you that we gladly paid to have her transferred via private ambulance company ($240) to Santa Teresita in Duarte, CA and it was a God send!!!! From the moment she arrived to the day she was released, 1 full month. The best care I've ever witnessed at a Rehab/Convalescent facility!!! The Carmelite Sisters run it and the atmosphere is pleasant in a very special way! They have chosen the best caregiving staff from RN's, CNA's, P.T.'s to the cleaning Custodians! And it's clean!! The patients are cared for with dignity, respect and compassion. They treat the family members and visitors of the patients with the same respect and always make you feel welcome. You can rest easy knowing your loved one is getting the best of care!! Though there's no place like home, there's also no place like Santa Teresita for the quality care and atmosphere that it takes to heal quickly and happily. My aunt spent a short time at Good Shepard Cottage. She lost weight, was ignored and became quite depressed. We are a Catholic family and thought this place would be a gentle place for her, we were very disappointed! The facility is owned by the Carmelite Order. We thought she would be spending time with the nuns, that did not happen. The only nun she was exposed to was the head of the place who didn't have time to even say hello. Long story short, look elsewhere. The price is going up and for such little attention to the residents i wonder where it is going. read more

Recently my family had to move my 90 year old, quadriplegic mom into Santa Teresita, because my 90 year old dad couldn't care for her anymore. My dad didn't want to give her care to anyone without making sure the place was 100% perfect! HE gave me a huge list of what he wanted for mom, and the place had to also be spotless and the nurses and staff had to be extremely patient and kind. It took months of searching until I found this new home for mom. It is the most beautiful place! The rooms are not just stark and hospital like, but made to look and feel cozy. The inside is spotless and clean, bright and cheerful! The care given to my mom has been fabulous! She is kept clean, her hair fixed nicely, and they even have given her manicures and painted her nails. Whenever there is anything wrong with her, they call immediately and tend to her with lots of love and care. She is never just left in bed all day, but showered, dressed and taken out for activities. Because she wants to communicate with dad daily, the nuns, nurses or other staff come help her with her iPad to zoom call with dad. The nuns there run a tight ship, making sure every detail is taken care of. My mom loves it there! Honestly, I'd give Santa Teresita a whole lot more stars, but I'm limited to only five! I am already a fan of this wonderful facility. Our family has been familiar with the Carmelite Sisters since the 1950's. My mother-in-law was at Santa Teresita back when TB was at it's worst. She lived with the Sisters for three years. Now that she is in her 90's the next chapter in her book will include Santa Teresita. The assisted living community is beautiful, the staff is amazing and we have been treated wonderfully. Patty Martin has gone over and above to send us photos, videos and help with the paperwork needed. Once they are able to reopen, we can tour and get my mother-in-law back to where she feels safe and will be taken care of. The first and most profound word that comes to mind is GRATITUDE! Our dear Mother was a resident at Santa Teresita's Manor for over 13 years. How we children hoped and prayed she would be accepted there since, trust me when I say this, I had checked out numerous facilities in the San Gabriel Valley and none of them came even close to the exceptional elder care which Santa Teresita provides for the elderly. Santa Teresita, in a nut shell provides a very strong and powerful well-rounded environment for it's residents where all their needs, medically, emotionally, personally, and most importantly - spiritually are met to the highest degree. We, our mother's children are so very thankful to all the staff of this facility and especially towards the wonderful Carmelite Sisters who own and run the facilities there. To say we were truly blessed to be a part of this beautiful and God-like institution does not say enough regarding the care and sacrifices of these dear Sisters and their professional staff. My grandmother was in the hospital and then was transferred to the Santa Teresita Rehab manor. She needed a lot of assistance , they couldn't meet her needs . They are very understaffed . They only have one RN. The caretakers were very kind to her . My grandmother fell at the facility , was hospitalized and due to the fall and other complications she passed away . The administration never called my family to see how she was or what the outcome was . When I went to go pick up her stuff , i told them she had passed away . They said they didn't want to bother us . As a catholic , I expected more from A catholic facility . We were very very disappointment and so sadden by our loss . read more

I had the shear pleasure and spiritual inspiration to be able to have my dear father be under the sisters care for 3 years. The genuine love for the elderly and all their residents far exceeds anything we, as a family, searched for. And we search quite a few facilities. The sisters have a sweet demeanor and their kindness is never diminished by their expertise in all aspects of Skilled Nursing or Assisted Living. We never felt as though this was a warehouse for those elderly citizens toward the end of their lives. They interact with the residents in so many ways whether it's visiting, various activities (if the resident is interested), compassion, just "listening" if they're lonely, joining them for prayer or praying privately for them among so many other things. Their Mission Statement "At Service of the Family for Life" is truly exhibited there in every aspect. The were always respectful of our family's wishes, concerns, and any outside influences that may weigh on a family in the very big decision to have a parent/loved one admitted to a faculty such as this. That's the difference Santa Teresita is NOT A TYPICAL FACILITY! It's a caring place where everyone becomes family in some way-a way that adapts to the need of the family of the resident. One of my most treasured things my father said to me, while residing there before his death was "I'm so lucky to be here! I love having my family but I also love the sisters as part of our family". What more can anyone wish for their elderly parent than to know those who are caring for him/her unselfishly devote their lives to God and to caring for those toward the end of their life! All of us felt blessed to have the sisters in our lives. So much so, that we continue to be involved with them in various other avenues to reenforce the true beauty of their works. My mother has been to more than one nursing home and this one has definitely been our favorite. We were fortunate enough to find a home for her where we knew she would be treated well. All of the staff is caring, attentive and accommodating. We are grateful that my mom gets the chance to get out and socialize whether its at church or at music class. My father was under the loving care of the Sisters for two years. In that time, I witnessed a profound respect and love in his care. The Sisters are called to be loving caregivers, and this is evident in all they do. Rarely does one have the opportunity to see true love in action, but at Santa Teresita, it is the constant. Sadly, my father didn't live long enough to see the new assisted living building, but I've been able to tour it, and it's not only beautiful, but carefully crafted to inconspicuously accommodate the needs of the elderly with items such as lower shelves, towel bars that double as hand rails, etc. There is a back yard BBQ area, and family get-togethers are common. Santa Teresita is also a facility where the spiritual needs of its residents are fulfilled. My father was able to attend Mass daily, which was very important to him. Every effort is made to make daily Mass available to all residents, even those in the skilled nursing facility, and those who may have mobility challenges. My dad was also able to participate in several activities that were very fulfilling--the bell choir, and specifically, the activities with the preschool where he was able to tutor twice a week. The intergenerational interaction made him so happy, and is so unique to the facility. My father and our family were completely happy with Santa Teresita, and we continue to support them in their goal of "serving the family for life".
