Everything brand new, extremely clean and very tidy. My mom would have loved it there had she recovered. The nurses kept my mom very clean and clean linens etc. The room in the house, bedrooms, bathrooms etc was plentiful. The pool will be great for clients coming in for physical therapy. What I appreciated most was that they treated you like family from the minute you came in to their facility. They cared for my mom as if she was their mom. The hospital left my mom is such bad shape that although they went above and beyond in care it wasn't enough but for future clients they will be very pleased with the care and attention provided. They even go as far as doing specialized meals for their clients and were so gracious with us during my mom's last hours. They continued to check in after my mom passed away which is just so kind. The neighborhood is quite lovely and serene. There is no reason that your loved ones or yourself should not come and stay at this facility. I saw so many board in care facilities and was very disappointed until I saw Gardenia Garden. It was just absolutely lovely.

Santa Teresita

Some people jokingly refer to the University of Notre Dame as Catholic Disneyland. On Sundays,…read morethere are literally dozens of places on campus to go to Mass; every dorm has its own chapel; there are more priests walking around in their black suits than you've seen since the early 1980s, and all the famous campus landmarks associated with football (Touchdown Jesus, Fair Catch Corby, First Down Moses) are actually pieces of religious art. Well, if Notre Dame is Catholic Disneyland, then Santa Teresita is Catholic Disneyland for old folks. No, there aren't dozens of chapels on its little campus, but you can't visit without seeing at least one or two Carmelite nuns in their traditional habits (all-white habits if they're doing medical work), and although I've only visited four or five times, I've met at least two different priests here, and I never came for Mass or any other religious service. The religious who work and volunteer here simply love spending time with the residents, and it shows. I know about Santa Teresita because my then 100-year-old great aunt moved in for a month when her full-time caregiver was on vacation. My very religious aunt loved the setting, the nuns and priests, and especially the staff members. She couldn't say enough about how well everyone treated her, and even though she was determined to live out her days in her own home, she admitted that Santa Teresita wouldn't be a bad place to be if she needed to live here. That might not sound like a glowing endorsement, but coming from my aunt, who never would have dreamed of leaving her house, it was an encouraging sign of openness. Not long after her 102nd birthday, my aunt's caregiver retired, and my aunt moved in to Santa Teresita permanently. This time, she had a room on the second floor, close to the elevator, and I visited her five or six times. My mom was largely in charge of finances and making sure she had everything she needed, and my aunt was always telling my mom to bring chocolates and other little things to give to the staff members and the nuns. My aunt really took to and loved the people who worked here, and when I met the employees and volunteers when I would come to pick her up or bring her back, I could tell they took their jobs seriously and truly enjoyed my aunt's company. The grounds are lovely. All the residents live in two cottages separated by a cute courtyard. I've only been inside the newer cottage, but they both look very nice from outside. If you toured my aunt's cottage while no one was there, you would have no idea that this is an old-age home. It feels more like a modern apartment complex with many large, inviting common areas. When we would bring my aunt back to Santa Teresita at night after some social event, there were always at least a few people in one of the main shared areas watching a movie on the TV. In addition to residents, staff members and priests would sometimes be there, but it felt totally natural, as if friends were just watching a movie together. I don't know many of the specifics, but I know that Santa Teresita offers various group activities for the residents, including field trips and on-site parties. At last year's Halloween party, my aunt won an award for having the best costume. Administratively, my mom dealt mostly with Sister Carmen, whom I only met once but who plays a big part in my whole family's estimation of Santa Teresita. She's a high-energy crackerjack marked by her deep commitment to her residents and making sure everything is running properly. My aunt's needs changed over the time she was at Santa Teresita, and Sister Carmen was always patient with and helpful to my mom in terms of assessing and changing levels of care. My aunt passed away peacefully in her sleep at Santa Teresita this past February. She was 102-years-old and had lived a full, enchanted kind of life. At her funeral, I got to meet Sister Carmen and some of the other employees and volunteers who cared for my aunt. She had left a deep impression on them, and despite the fact that the funeral was very far away from Duarte, a lot of people from Santa Teresita came to pay their respects. They also had a separate memorial service for my aunt at Santa Teresita. Rehabilitation and old-age homes can and often do feel so depressing. Nothing at Santa Teresita ever felt that way. From the setting itself to the employees and volunteers, there was always a sense of goodwill and companionship.

My sister had a beautiful big room with all of her things in it including her desk, computer, TV and DVD player, large bookshelves, and pictures on the walls. It really felt like her own apartment. She was unable to walk and was moved from her wheel chair to her bed in a hydraulic lift. The staff were warm and loving and always ready to do whatever she wished. She liked to do things on schedule so they helped her to set up a daily plan. Every member of the staff was friendly, patient, and kind. They listened to her requests and and appreciated her humor and wit. She enjoyed the home cooked food that was prepared for her and the other residents. And, in good weather often was taken outside to eat lunch or look at the beautiful, quiet garden. When she was first there she joined in exercises every day after breakfast. Our family visited her often and on occasion would take her out to the gazebo in the garden for an ice cream treat or special lunch. We enjoyed having Vanessa celebrate all the holidays in a big way. We had the Easter Bunny visit, visiting musicians, Fourth of July Flags, and Treats for Halloween. We all were very pleased with everything and everyone there. We were fortunate indeed to have found such a wonderful place for my sister to live out her last days. I heartily recommend this very special Board and Care home.

It was very important for us to find a place that felt like home for our mom. Nikkiann & Beatrice helped make the transition from home to the facility comfortable for both our family and our mom. They always had a smile on their face and for the first month would report to us regularly on a weekly basis on how our mom was doing. This brought us peace of mind and made us feel we made the right decision. Sharon and the caregivers were highly qualified to care for patients with different needs like our mom who had dementia, Parkinson's, diabetes and history of TIAs. We are so grateful for their unconditional care and love they showed to our mom and the whole family. Our family highly recommends Henrietta's Leven Oaks! They earned 5 stars and beyond for their quality service, beautiful historic building, and amazing staff. Thank you so much for caring for our precious mother.

So disappointed in this facility. Brookdale facilities have an excellent reputation, which is why…read morewe choose this local facility for our mom. When Mom's health recently declined, BD staff nurse visited Mom in the hospital, and assessed Mom to determine if she could continue living there. The cost wasn't an issue. We just wanted Mom to be in safe place that could provide the care she needs. Three MD's had previously determined and documented that Mom needed to be in skilled nursing home or private board and care home. However, the BD staff nurse determined that BD could provide sufficient additional services including on-call aides to facilitate toileting, transferring, dressing and eating for additional fees amounting to additional 60% each month. This decision / assessment was supported by the exec director. We did not want to relocate Mom if BD could live up to their commitment to provide the on-call services, as BD was 'home' for Mom. BD proved to me on multiple occasions that they could not provide the level of care Mom needed at this stage in her life. In just one example, I personally pressed the call-button for assistance to move Mom to the commode in her bedroom. And after waiting 30 minutes, I telephoned the desk to escalate the request for assistance. We waited another 10 minutes for aides to arrive. Imagine waiting 40 minutes to urinate after you have sounded the alarm, and picture how upset you would be. Now, imagine that you are 93 years old and you can't get out of bed to move to a toilet that is a couple of feet away from you. Imagine your hysteria, and multiply that by dementia. This is where the story goes from unforgettable to unforgivable. Our family determined that BD was no longer a suitable place for Mom to live. Telling Mom was heartbreaking. We asked BD exec staff to support our family decision to relocate Mom. Instead, the nurse and exec director contradicted what we had told her and in conversation with her while I was personally present, they held to their opinion that they could care for her. This made the transition many times worse than it would have been if they had supported us. Mom loved the day-to-day staff at BD. She especially loved Gail at the main desk. Mom never in 3 years had a positive word to say about the food, and Mom is not a picky eater. In the years that Mom lived there, I found every regular employee to be friendly, kind and polite.
