This establishment is amazing! Their produce is always fresh and all items that are stocked are extremely well kept! The food quality is great and there is abundance of options (guaranteed to find whatever you need)! Additionally, their staff is amazing. Everyone is super polite, super willing to help, and makes you feel welcomed. The ambiance of the store is very friendly and calm. The store is very clean and you can tell that management does a great job with upkeep and quality. And as a cherry on top, their parking is awesome with ample space and parking spots friendly to large vehicles. Overall, this place is an awesome establishment and it will be the only grocery store I will be going to in the Cleveland area. read more

I am a long time resident of Lakewood's northwest side, and have shopped at Sapell's for many years. The customer base for Sapell's is a diverse group, so you will have your boomers, millenniums, Latinos, African-American, upper middle-class and lower middle-class. And Sapell's will cater to them all. Is it a pretty store? No. Does it have specialty items? No. But if you're doing real home cooking, missing an ingredient, and cannot bear the crowd at Giant Eagle this is the place to go.I It has the best prices for pork and chicken. As well as a nice selection of Latino items if you are cooking Mexican. And the liquor store is nice to have so close. Overall I am a fan. read more

Terrible customer service! Went in to cash a check & soon as the lady working customer service saw it was a hand written check, she started giving me attitude! I've been I there many times to cash checks & she was super mad at me about the hand written check! She said their policy is no hand written checks. Fine. But why you mad about it? I asked if I could speak to the manager, she said I am the manager! You can speak to my boss! I said ok. I'm not a shopper by nature, especially when it comes to food. I buy when I need and seldom leave my comfort zone, even if I can save money. Sapell's is a local market near my apt that I have been utilizing as of late. I'm a GE patron most of the time, but if I need something simple in a pinch they're right around the corner. It's well organized well stocked and pretty clean. So I feel comfortable with perishables if I need to get them there. The staff is friendly and it never seems crazy busy, but there seems to be a steady stream of patrons usually. Prices are average. A little more in some areas a little less in others. So, if youre a West CLE or Lakewood resident stop in and support a local grocery store. Oh did I mention they have a State Liquor store too? BONUS! read more

Sapell's may not be Heinens. But I'd rather go here and Aldi's before I go to Giant Eagle. Sapell's has reasonable prices on some things. Other things they don't. However they are a small stand alone store and it's not a chain. It's perfect for the single person who doesn't need to stock up. But the meat selection and also the fruit and veggies are priced just fine. Not too mention if you like your wine and spirits they are right there and reasonably priced. Never felt like they were ghetto at all as I've read. Just down to earth people doing their jobs and they've all been really friendly since I've moved back to the neighborhood. Been going here for years though. If you're Boujee then this is not the place for you. Fine they have loyal customers so no skin off their backs. Kudos Sapell's. There's always going to be haters. Slowly I have watched my neighborhood deteriorate. In typical fashion the city ignores hard working, home and yard maintaining, and law abiding people moving from the area. The councilman along with Cudell Improvement Inc. send out self congratulatory bulletins as homes deteriorate and businesses close. A group of do nothings still fiddling long after Cleveland burned. A sure sign of deterioration are the empty stores on Clifton. Thank goodness for Sapell's. Since the evacuation of Giant Eagle it is being paid back for remaining in the area. Registers have been added and more help has been hired. Those of us growing up in blue collar homes often find the increasing supply of gourmet or trendy products amusing. I do not always need coffee beans picked under the waning moon on remote mountains. I do not always need beef from cows who were massaged after attending a concert on a hill in California. I frequently crave pot roast, fried cube steaks, beef stew, or chili. Sapell's offers all the simple and basic cuts of meat at good prices. I can find pork steaks that are perfect for making my favorite sandwich, laci pecsenye. Sapell's also has the full line of Glory Southern-style canned goods. The kale is as good as any I ever had anyplace during my eighteen years living in Virginia. Sapell's stocks ice burg lettuce and Pierre's ice cream. Don't go here for Jeni's chocolate-jalapeno-sea urchin ice cream or for heirloom tomatoes. Go here if you want to cook a dinner that your parents or grandparents will enjoy. There are two options for one-stop-shopping around this area and that's Giant Eagle and Sapell's. Giant Eagle may look larger, shinier, fresher--it's not. Sapell's isn't much cleaner, but I've accidentally purchased just as many expired or moldy items at GE. And it might not have the selection or the brands, but it also offers liquor, some fresh produce and makes me way less suicidal than Giant Eagle does. For lots of groceries when I also need booze, I'll tough out Giant Eagle. For just a few ingredients and booze, Sapell's. Oh, and they have a shuttle for the elderly and those who spend over $50 on groceries. read more

This is a little grocery that is close to my house. It is NOT Heinen's, but I get better service for the few things I do buy here than the overpriced Giant Eagle at 117th and 90. Giant Eagle has poor quality meat. I am a HUGE food snob and find Sapell's locally obtained fresh, meats much better. Their chicken isn't "enhanced" with that horrible salt solution that everyone is pumping into their meats. This is what sent me to Sapell's to begin with. Yes, they sell alcohol, which seems to be something more pertinent to previous reviewers. Not a priority to me, but there is that segment that comes in to purchase just booze, cigarettes and lottery tickets. We had those types as well back where in lived in an upscale San Diego neighborhood...live and let live. Sapell's offers a courtesy shuttle to people who purchase over $50 in groceries and elderly customers. I run in to grab meat, deli meat and cheese, mostly the basics..I shop MANY places, but this little store filled the void that the GE on Clinton left behind...not sure what a "skeezy" neighborhood is. I have mixed feeling about Sapell's. It certainly isn't the worst grocery store I have frequented (Sapell's reminds me of the grocery store closest to my grandparents' house in Anchorage: http://www.yelp.com/biz/carrs-quality-centers-anchorage) but it isn't exactly a "nice" grocery store, either. I like that Sapell's is a local independent grocer and it's nice to have something other than Constantino's around. The selection is okay and staff is friendly. I also like that Sapell's has a shuttle for customers who buy more than $50 of groceries, but pricing isn't always the most accurate or obvious. (Today I realized after leaving that I paid more than I expected for a loaf of bread.) It is great to have Sapell's here, but I wish there were something a little better nearby. W 117th tends to have some interesting characters and Sapell's seems to be where they shop. A Trader Joe's would be perfect but I am extremely curious about the Lucky's that is supposedly going to be built down the street. read more

Took my boyfriend here for the first time and he was hooked. It's our new go to place for cheap wine and meat. Lets start with the wine first. If you go to the section across from the registers by the customer service desk they put the wine that they are trying to get rid of there. Most of the time its wine that is normally $10-$13 marked down to 3.99. Then if you buy a case you get 10% off. I highly recommend this. I've done this for Thanksgiving and Christmas and saved so much money. Keep in mind this isn't garbage wine this is good stuff. The meat prices here are great and especially when you want to get things like smoked ham hocks or pork butt. Giant eagle is so expensive that I try to get everything I need here. The "Black" branded liquors are behind the counter in case you're wondering. I absolutely regret spending $128+ on 3 bottles of liquor, but I was in a bind. Simone's is their competitor located further up Detroit with a WAY better selection, and they treat everyone equal! The nerves of the goofy officer that tried to outsmart me by saying they were back there because they were expensive...until I pulled out 2 bottles from my basket that were more expensive then 80% of the "Black" selection. Don't worry...Jack Daniels, Jameson and the likes are within the regular isle! To the staff and owner...I literally earn more than the officer and a few of his partners at LPD and the young girl that was attempting to play me (really?!?!) COMBINED with overtime, but they had the audacity to TRY to outsmart me because I HAPPEN to be born Black. Hell...I guarantee I earn within range of the owner ;)! Just stating a fact, and for the record it actually pains me that I have to even seem as though I'm talking down on someone as if I'm ANY bit better than ANYONE. I'm not! It's painfully obvious within a matter of seconds, yet I spent $128+ dollars in that establishment within a matter of minutes. Giant Eagle is within distance also! read more

Its my go to place. Yes there are fancier and more expensive places like Lucky's, but honestly i would rather chew my arm off then go to that hate filled place. Sapells is a small independently owned store. Your not going to get coddled there. but there close reasonably priced and convenient. I'm a rather large intimidating guy so i don't run into many problems. I've have always been polite and respectful to the employees and they have been the same to me. And the fact that if you spend $60 or more they will drive you home and carry your groceries to your door for free. I think that speaks for itself. Sapell's! What I LIKE: They're close! I live on Clifton near Cove, so my choices are Sapell's and Giant Eagle and I dislike the ridiculously expensive options at Giant Eagle. They're Clean! Lately, this store has been on it. You can expect a clean store everything very neatly organized. Their Produce & Meat: There isn't the largest selection, but what they do have is 99% of the time the freshest you will find. You don't have to pick through apples and peppers to find a non-bruised one. Their Meat is on Point! It ALWAYS looks and smells fresh, I honestly choose to get my meat from Sapell's over GE any day. They're Quick! Never expect to wait in line more than 5 minutes. What I DISLIKE: Honestly, it's hard for me to find something I don't like. When people on here say they're are shady characters, thy are spot on. It's not uncommon to hear a loud, drunk man or woman yelling at an invisible person, but that comes with the territory of offering lots of booze choices. So in short, it's not the grocery store I full on grocery shop at, but between grocery shopping, if I need to make a meal, I know I can come here and get about everything I need and not be disappointed! read more

Sure you can go here and find things on sale for a great price, but you definitely have to look closely at what your buying and the expiration dates. I went in here to pick up a couple of items and there was molded cheese and milk that had been expired for MONTHS!!!! I only like going here to purchase some of their veggies when they get them in fresh because the prices are dirt cheap, but other than that everything is priced higher than most grocery stores and the items definitely aren't fresh. This place is an old school 1970s grocery store. Something smells bad in the meat isle,the flickering fluorescent lights will give you a headache, the floors are dirty, the staff is rude, the customers are weird and it feels like a mostly sticky and insanitary place to buy food. Has an abundance of cheap booze, little debbies and expired meat. I think the only thing that keeps this place in business is a complete lack of competition. read more

I was at the Huntington Bank on Clifrton just around the corner from Sapell's on 117th street. I am in a wheelchair and when I came out of the bank the Sapell's Van was parked in the Handicap spot and the man from Sapell's was in the store doing banking for the store I would suppose. He did not have a permit, so I guess it was just easy for him to park there. I called Sapells and a women answered the phone and I told her one of the drivers had parked in the handicap spot and all she said was ok. I asked to talk with the owner and she told me she was the owner. I asked would she do something about it and she told me she had bigger problems and what was she to do repremand him? I was going to say she should do something and she hung up on me. You do not treat complaints from customers like that and should have told me she would talk with the driver. Tickets for parking in one of those spots without a permit can cost up to 2 to 3 hundred dollars. I will not use the store and I will not tell others to use it.
