Recently vacationed on the North Fork of the New River. Stumbled on this place about 10 miles from our VRBO. Grabbed sandwiches and were informed by the proprietor that we should come back for Friday night smoked prime rib. He cautioned us that we should make a reservation. We did, for our entire family of 6. I can honestly say that the food and atmosphere were top 5 of all the places I have ever eaten in 62 years. The puttanesca! Oh my goodness! Smoked ribeye same! I guess you could say it's in the middle of nowhere, but what a hidden delight. A typical old time general store with a refurbished old green pick-up in front. Can't miss it. The owner and maitre'd, Bruce, is a connoisseur of Indian Motorcycles, and has a couple of refurbished ones on display inside adding to the color. His wife, Sarah, is the co-owner and chef, and what a spread she cooked up! Our table of six delighted in Bruce's special cocktails, prime rib, crab cakes (no filler) and delicious homemade pecan pie. We were lucky to get reservations on such short notice. We ate here last night after a long day of hiking at Grayson Highlands SP. We had the pulled pork nachos and a salad -- both items were delicious. Everything is prepared made to order with fresh ingredients, so the prep time was appropriate and well worth the wait. The entire staff was extremely friendly and attentive. Plus, they are dog-friendly (of course we were eating outside). Prices ranged from $12-$25 for items on the menu. Considering they use fresh ingredients that's a bargain. A nice place to stop for food, especially if you're into motorcycles and good pork BBQ; they'll also make a good veggie sandwich with avocado, tomato, etc., which my daughter liked a lot. The folks who run the place are very nice. They have ice cream and a good selection of beers (with your food or to take home). It's easy to miss so keep your eyes open! read more

Had awesome Birthday BBQ at "Sarah's" Fox Creek General Store. In Grant,Va (near Troutdale in Grayson County) I eat lots of BBQ from all over and after eating lunch just had to also get a to go order after tasting how good it was. Neat place. Owner even put a candle on my BBQ plate! read more

Sarah's is a great stop for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner along with meeting local folks or other travelers in the area. We stop as often as possible and are still working our way through the menu. So far I can highly recommend the Chicken Salad, BELT, The Luke, and the BBQ. Beer, Wine and soft drinks are also available. We discovered this place was formerly known as Hoffman's Store. It's easy to find but we spent a good bit of time attempting to locate it before being set straight as to the store's new ownership by a sweet old lady with an even sweeter southern accent we met in front of the Troutdale post office. They sell camping essentials including beer, wine and a limited but sufficient selection of staples-- bread, lunch meat, local cheeses, sun screen, ice and firewood. But the attraction that will earn this place historic marker status if by some tragic circumstance it's gone 100 years from now the homemade pulled pork barbeque sandwiches, slow-smoked by the owner's daughter and topped with also made-on-site coleslaw. The meat was lean, moist, and shot through with a complex and sultry tang acquired from the alchemy between seasoning and the smoking process that renders the application of sauce both unnecessary and redundant. The pork's texture was a magic combination of tender with a touch of crunch from tiny bits of charred tips that declared in a genteel tone, "I am pulled pork that was tended to by someone who is passionate about serving a superior product and doesn't care how long it takes to achieve those results as long as it puts a smile on the customer's face." They also do ribs, and bake pies, and do weekly artisan quality suppers which I sincerely hope we get the chance to partake of next time we are in the area. read more
