The Bento chicken teriyaki box and spare shrimp tempura.
    Marie M.

I'm stuck between a 3 and 4 stars for this place because I would like to say that the food was decent for food at a food court inside a mall. My husband and I had little time to spare to go anywhere else for something quick, and we didn't want burgers. We ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento box and it had a nice sampling of food for us to share and pick from. The sushi wasn't bad and neither was the Teriyaki chicken. I also bought some spare shrimp tempura, which was surprisingly good. If pressed for time again and needing to eat inside the mall, I might choose this place again for the box special. The only thing I didn't care for and wasn't too surprised was the service. Lack of communication in the English dept., and a bit on the rude side. I tried to ask some questions and was provided with a dumbfound look.

I agree with the current overall rating of 3.5 stars based upon my lunch experience. The chicken bento box included a generous portion of teriyaki chicken, plenty of my choice of rice, a garden salad w/ ranch dressing, three dumplings and four pieces of California roll for $9.19, which was pretty fair. I opted for the fried rice instead of steamed rice (add $0.50), but regretted the choice, because it was unusually soupy. Next time I'll go with the steamed rice. Also, the teriyaki sauce was somewhat bland. Everything else was pretty good, while the service at the counter was just accommodative. I'm rounding down from 3.5 due to the soupy fried rice and mediocre service.

The employees here are very cheerful. They are generous in their rice and chicken portion! Tasty, fresh off the grill!

    Teriyaki Chicken Bento Box

I have been here for a few times. Today I have teriyaki chicken bento box here. It is fresh, hot and delicious. This restaurant locates inside a mall. It is so convenient!!

I think it was his eyes. I think his eyes were what lured me closer. He was an older man, giving samples and he had a warmth about him. I wasn't really sure what to expect. It's mall food and the bar is set fairly low. After all, it's not exactly upscale dining. I honestly don't know why I strayed from my mall usual pizza but I am glad I did. I got a combo plate. It was fresh and the noodles and beef were so yummy! The servers were nice and helpful. I had plenty of questions since it was my first time. They were patient and kind to me. They could tell I was a bit overwhelmed. I had not expected to be presented so many tasty choices. The combo plate was just that- a little of everything. I liked the variety and the freshness. The servings were more than adequate. Very generous portions. There was a steady stream of customers and that is always a good sign. As I ate my delicious meal and people watched, I could see him giving our samples. What a delight to watch him work and to realize he had lured me in for a terrific new dining experience.

This is inside the Oak Park Mall food court. I love the chicken teriyaki here and their bento box meal. They are very quick on making the food and it is cooked on the hibachi grill. They have the coupon stamps for when you purchase 5 Teriyaki meals, you'll get the 6th one free. It's great when you come to the Oak Park Mall because you can order it often after shopping. I redeemed the free meal this time since I have five stamps. I would highly recommend if you are a chicken teriyaki lover!

My Favorite Asian food chain hands down. This location is 30 minutes from my house, but every time I'm near Oakpark mall I make sure to hit up Sarku. These can only be found in malls I've never had it outside of one. The food is always fresh and made to order. The teriyaki chicken is my fav off the menu. The sushi is always fresh and the staff is always good at getting you in and out the line. Everybody had their fav mall food and this just happens to be mine.

My fav food court choice in Oak Park! Because when I order Teriyaki chicken, double meat with fried rice and veggies, I know I'll have left overs AND the price is so worth it. They cook it there in front of you so it's hot and fresh. Plus they have Sriracha sauce so if course that's 5 stars.

No wasabi, no soy sauce, no ginger? I made better looking sushi roll on my first attempt just by watching an instructional video

The staff was friendly and helpful, and the space was charming, with a Japanese cooking show playing on a wall mounted tv, nice music playing in the space, and eclectic decor throughout. Everything was also very clean and organized, and I appreciated the amazing prices for the food! The quality is on par with other Japanese restaurants I have been to, which often charge more even for their lunch special. I'll absolutely be returning to Sam's in the future to try more of their food!

I would like to be very honest here, I was really misled by the ratings and reviews here on Yelp…read more While I thought the decor was really nice, added a cute Korean and Japanese touch, the food did let me down. We got the Yummy Combo with Garden Salad ($17), the Mango Tango Roll ($14), and the Sakura Blossom Roll ($14). The service was fast, and our server was very sweet and caring. To begin with, even though the sushi looked colorful and appealing, it lacked taste. It was missing seasoning, felt stale, and had almost zero freshness. It reminded me of the premade sushi you get at PanAsia, Target, or Sam's Club. Freshness is a huge factor for me when I go out for sushi, but this just didn't have it. The rice was dry by the time it reached our table, and it wasn't sticky enough. It felt like the cold rice was microwaved and then used to make sushi - that's the feeling I got. I also didn't think it was worth the money. We spent over $50 + after tax and tip for three rolls, which is similar to what many other sushi restaurants charge, but those places serve much fresher and better quality sushi - Sushi Uni in Lenexa. The garden salad dressing was also a complete disappointment. It had no distinct ginger flavor or even enough seasoning. It was very thick and heavily spread over the salad, which made it unpleasant to look at and eat. Overall, the service was excellent, but the food didn't live up to the ratings or the price. The three stars are for the lovely server, the beautiful decor, and the well presented sushi. I really hope they improve the freshness because, based on the older reviews, they seem to have the potential to serve much better sushi. If they do, I will be the first one to definitely come back to try more of their beautiful looking rolls.

Then we sat down at the teppanyaki table, and things went south faster than a dropped egg. Our server was solid, but the "chef" was a total trainwreck. It felt like we were an inconvenience to his schedule. He just rushed through the motions with zero engagement, like he was checking off a grocery list instead of actually cooking for people. The "Highlights" (and I use that term loosely): The Timing: I ordered the steak and scallops. He finished my steak before the rice even hit the grill. My cow just sat there getting cold while we watched him "work." The Culinary Wisdom: When one of us asked if the beef was a strip or a ribeye, he literally just said, "It's steak." Cool. Glad we cleared that up. The Cross-Contamination Special: We had a vegetarian in the group. He proceeded to cook her tofu directly in the steak juice. Truly a "chef's kiss" moment if you hate your customers. The Doneness (or lack thereof): The salmon was basically still swimming (raw), and the scallops were charred and tasted like fire and brimstone. The Mussels: I grabbed a side of green mussels. They were... fine? I've had much better elsewhere in town, but they were the Olympic gold medalists of my meal by default. The Silver Lining? The Sake. It came in a take-home glass, was incredibly easy to drink, and was 100% necessary to get through the rest of the experience. I can't speak for the sushi, but if it's handled with the same "I don't want to be here" energy as the teppanyaki, I'd stay far, far away. Two stars only because the hostess was nice and the Sake did its job.

The staff are incredible--super knowledgeable, nice, conversational, and friendly. What more could you ask for? The food is FANTASTIC. I don't know how they categorize their style of cuisine but I'd call it "Japanese fusion" for lack of a better, more specific take. It's largely (or wholly?) Japanese, but I've been to Japan many times and am a huge fan of Japanese cuisine of all varieties, and I couldn't pinpoint some of the dishes, but this is not a criticism, only an explanation as to why I am challenged with categorizing the place. All small plates, we had excellent cocktails and a variety of (recommended) small plates, all of which were surprising and excellent. Standout dishes: well, all of them, but the Corn & Crab Okonomiyaki was delicious--and different; the skewers with Jidori Chicken Oyster, Barham Farm Chicken Heart, and Barham Farm Chicken Tsukune were delectable; and the local Enoki Mushroom Tempura--also incredible and should have ordered a second.
