First time at the Shawnee location and we loved it! I haven't been to Aoyama in years and it was just as delicious as I remember. The service was very quick. My boyfriend and I both got the specialty Aoyama Garlic Volcano ramen which we loved. I honestly expected it to be extremely spicy and this was both more of a medium heat for both of us. The garlic in it really elevated it for us. It's also great because it comes with a whole egg so I got 2 because my boyfriend doesn't like them. The inside is so cute and there are a lot of seating options for it being so small. read more

The service is fast and friendly. The restaurant is laid out exactly like the Olathe location, and also a small footprint. I had the Tom Yum ramen and my wife had the chicken wonton ramen. Both were delicious, however.... 1) You just can't beat the classic tonkotsu ramen. That is always so good. 2) There is an option here not available in Olathe called Beef Szechuan Noodle soup. The server brought me a sample of the broth and holy $h1t it was good. I'll definitely be getting that next visit. 3) Every time I try a new Tom Yum soup, it never lives up to the best of the best. Onigiri. Rice balls with meat (or other filling) in them. That is what started this adventure! This starts with being introduced to Onigiri at NAKACON, which I had never taken part in previously. Oh wow... that is a time. Maybe I'll review it if/when I attend this year. One snack that they have at the event is Onigiri. And they are neat little quick foods. That caused a search for them not at the event. And there are a few places. But, they are the same wrapped-up little seaweed and rice bombs that are sold at the Con. But, surprise! Aoyama has them, and they are amazing! This little Ramen shop is often overlooked as it is right between a Savers and a Johnny's Tavern. But it is worth the trip. A great little lunch spot with fantastic staff and a clean and simple atmosphere. I have been here before and had their Ramen, which is also delicious and quick. So go try this place. There is plenty to love here. I'll be at the bar down the side, chowing down on Onigiri and maybe some Ramen. read more

This is a follow up to my original review. I was unsure whether to go with two stars or three, but the Yelp app has three as "Not sure? Tell us the good and the bad", so I went with that one. FPO and I have been coming to this Aoyama location since they opened. It's more convenient than their original Olathe location. We went again last night, and going forward we'll make the trek to the original. Maybe not as often, but still on occasion. Aoyama Shawnee started out great, but I think that may have been because they had managers from the original location working at the new one. Over the past few visits we noticed the food quality wasn't as good and the service has definitely declined. I had my usual Classic Tonkatsu, which was okay. The flavor was still good, the meat was tough. FPO tried their new Szechuan Beef which I'm told has a smokey heat to it and flavor-wise was pretty good. Downside is, the meat was tough in this one too. And, because we'd never tried it before, we asked the waitress how it was. She said, not spicy at all. It had heat. For us that's not a problem. We're both used to Asian spicy. If it had been someone else though, they probably would've been unpleasantly surprised. I'd also suggest something other than CNN news on the televisions. Yes, it's important to be aware of current events, but it's not what I'd choose to watch when I go out to a restaurant. Stick with the sports stations, like the original Aoyama. I also wasn't thrilled with the way our waitress didn't check back, or how she just dropped off our check without asking if we'd like anything else or if we we had a phone number listed for their Aoyama rewards program, or just continued to walk away while FPO tried to talk to her. This last part may be just because I'm so used to restaurant experiences in Hawaii (both working and dining), and in Hawaii the Department of Health requires restaurant works who come in contact with food to wear a shirt with sleeves. It must not be the same in Kansas, but food servers in razor back tank tops still make me cringe. read more

Found this gem in Shawnee with a friend. The tom yum soup and tempura were delicious. The tempura was served perfectly, hot and fresh. The soup came a bit too quick, probably about 5-10 following the appetizers. Also, we were about ten minutes into our soup when the bill came. It was very bizarre. Aoyama Ramen is your next top ramen spot to check out in Greater Kansas City. There is currently an Aoyama Ramen restaurant in Olathe and one in Shawnee. We started our meal with the house dumplings, edamame, a house salad with ginger dressing, and the insanely delicious crab rice roll (not sushi rolls, but almost like a mini sushi sandwich). We also tried the Hot Sake...great presentation with a heated container for the sake to stay warm throughout your meal. I'm always down to try a new ramen spot and was excited to learn that this opened up nearby. I placed an order online without any issues. The interior isn't huge. It's a pretty small spot but there are some seats. I loved the giant Godzilla mural. It's super cute. They also have a cooler in the front with various soft drinks but also sake! I had to get some sake to go and it was easily added onto my order. I decided to try the Bang Bang Shrimp: crispy tempura fried shrimp tossed in a sweet chili sauce. They were pretty large and were good. I also got an order of gyoza: crispy pan fried dumplings stuffed with pork and cabbage. I would definitely order them again and recommend them! They were my favorite of the two. I tried the Tonkotsu Classic Ramen: thick, rich, creamy 15 hour pork broth topped with chashu, seasoned egg, bean sprout, scallion, and nori. The soup was delicious and the to go packaging was excellent at keeping everything fresh. The portion sizes are average on the Ramen. But it's not super tiny, it's just right. When I learned this place had opened near me, I ordered delivery from it. It was packaged with care and delivered to me in a timely manner. I appreciated that they separated the noodles from the liquid broth of the ramen. I combined them together in my own larger bowl, and enjoyed it with the disposable wood chopsticks they had packed with it. The small amount of meat with my noodles was tasty and flavorful. The broth and noodles were okay and pretty typical. Not very thick. The broth was a bit salty, and not very rich in flavor. It was a good meal, but I think I will want to try a different type of ramen before ordering this one again. Maybe I need to eat it in the restaurant as well. Came here for lunch on a very cold February day and it was great! We were looking specifically for ramen, live in Olathe but were in Lenexa for appts, and thought we'd check out Aoyama Ramen in Olathe but they are closed on Mondays. I didn't even know this location existed until Yelp told me it was close to our appointment. We shared the gyoza which was so great, plump and perfectly steamed with a crispy bottom. Most uncomfortable dining experience of my life. My husband and I went last night to enjoy a chill dinner and drink. We got there at 8:10 and I understand that they close at 9, but it's not the kind of place where you plan to dine for hours. Immediately we could tell they didn't want us there. The server asked about 5 times in 5 minutes if we were ready to order. While we didn't even have our food yet, they started stacking chairs and once we got our food they started mopping around us. This was at 8:30.. they still had 30 minutes til close and this is a tiny restaurant with about 6 tables so it takes no time at all to clean, but they felt the need to do it while we were eating. I was trying to eat my ramen while this guy was not even a foot to the left of me mopping. I just wanted to leave immediately, like point taken sir. I asked for a togo container and who I assume was the manager told me to not feel rushed that they don't close for 30 minutes and I informed him that I could tell they did not want us there and he replied that they were slow that day.. not sure why that meant that we couldn't enjoy our meal. We left at 8:45 and will never be back. Regarding the food, my ramen was alright. My husband got this beef rice dish that was cold stringy beef full of fat in small strips laid on top of white rice. No seasoning or sauce or flavor. Biggest waste of $50. There's plenty of delicious ramen places around like KC Craft Ramen I'd recommend over this place with the worst service I've ever experienced. read more

Went here last week with my parents who live really close to here. It was their first time at an Aoyama ramen and my first time at this location. Im really excited for such a yummy non-American restaurant to be going in to that part of Shawnee. As always, the food was great. Extremely friendly service. I got their to tonkatsu ramen, my mom got the spicy chicken and my dad got the chicken wonton and we split the kaarage as an app. We all loved our soup. My mom did find hers to be spicier than she expected for a Kansas restaurant (not a bad thing) but she just drank extra water, but something to consider if you are looking for tex mex levels of spice, it's more than that. So excited that this is in the neighborhood. Small and quaint, but spaced out enough so that you feel like you still have your own space to eat. Love the decor and ambiance. I've seen all different types of people here with varying group sizes, including families with children. They are very accommodating. There aren't a lot of tables so if you'd like to sit down quickly with a large group, come early. I got the garlic ramen and it was great... not too salty. It was a huge bowl but I ate it all up. And anyone who knows anything about ramen eggs knows you order two because one isn't enough. Again, both were wonderful. The whole meal was wonderful. I'm so happy they opened here. As someone who's go-to is ramen for lunch at least two times a week, I'm very happy to eat theirs. I love ramen. I have options for really good ramen at home, including my own homemade noodles and toppings, and the instant version, that can easily be doctored to build a wonderful bowl, much better than one might expect. Glad they opened a location closer to us and it was fantastic as well. I like the atmosphere and the service could not have been better. I enjoyed the green tea mist cocktail and they have some other good cocktail options. We always get some gyoza because it's some of the best you'll ever have. For my entree, I had the miso hot ramen. I enjoy spicy and it is somewhat but if your spicy preference is mild I don't think it would be too much for you. Great flavor. Can't wait to go back. read more

Welcome to Shawnee! I am so excited to have a ramen place in town. The cute ramen eating Godzilla art on the wall ties this branch to the Olathe branch. The staff was super friendly and introduced the Shawnee menu to us, which had a few speciality items that are not on the Olathe menu like Tom Yum ramen and Tempura plate. He checked in on us often throughout the visit and he really wanted to make sure we had a great experience. For our ramen, we opted for our usual order to compare the food and it did not disappoint! The perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg added creaminess to the warm and flavorful broth that we expected. The noodles were cooked just right and the bowl of ramen checked all the boxes. PS, the bowls look smaller but it's a little deeper so the portion size seemed unchanged. I probably wouldn't order the tempura again. The batter was salted and I liked the veggies but some pieces were a little soggy and the shrimp was tiny. They do have fewer tables here so I'd imagine it will get busy! read more
