Cooling tower at Satsop Nuclear Power Plant
    Alden C.

A slight detour from Highway 101 but the abandoned Satsop Nuclear Plant is still relatively close to the highway as far as detours go. You can see how close it is from 101. The Satsop Nuclear Plant was a nuclear facility that never became operational. I'm a child of the late Cold War Era and whenever I see cooling towers like this it makes me want to run the other way. Lol! Since this facility never became operational the general public can pretty much go right up to the towers. The area is not completely abandoned though. There is a business park that is here as well. The Satsop Plant has had a number of films shot on location here like The Hunger Games, Divergent and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Music videos have also been filmed here as well. The attraction is free so that is cool but despite the ability to get "pretty close" the security team for the company that is at the business park may get suspicious and there is no trespassing....so explore but don't explore. ;) Weekends are pretty dead in the industrial park but you know....you didn't hear it from me. Lol!

This is one of the reactors.

This is worth the detour if you enjoy eerie and creepy destinations. We happened to arrive on a dreary day, and the rain and fog created an interesting atmosphere. We enjoyed driving around and taking photos at the reactors (no trespassing, though). A few tricks randomly showed up and followed us around, so we think there is active security. It was totally awesome, though.

    1 of 2 power plants.

Constructed beginning in 1977 and stopped in 1983 this nuclear plant was 76% complete but due to a $961 million budget shortage the towers were never completed.

Anywho, the gas station receptionist started small talk with me and made mention of several iconic attractions around puget sound that I should indulge in. One of them was the Tacoma Narrows Bridge pedestrian walkway, so immediately following my haircut, I decided to head over. She even gave me specific parking instructions in order to avoid hazards. I found that location, parked, and entered the walkway through a small break between the fence line. The walkway consists of a two-way walk, run, and bike travel path divided by a Highway Style Guard Rail system. On the way there, there's a very nice scenic view of Mount Rainier from the bridge for those who are into the mountain aesthetics. For me, the engineering and architectural skills that go behind manufacturing such an amazing structure are more gratifying. Also, I may find it more fascinating due to constructing several small-level bridges in the past. As for the water, I've seen on several platforms like Threads, where a lot of the patrons rant and rave about the hydrodynamics of the Narrows, but I am no expert in the mechanics of water current nor am I stimulated by it presently. It was the twin suspension bridge complex for me. Overall, the experience was top-tier and peaceful.

Continue driving straight and stay in your lane while on the bridge. If driving eastbound or traveling to Tacoma, drivers are allowed to switch lanes because there are no grates and drivers must pay a toll. Cameras take photos of vehicle license plates that avoids toll pay. Have $5.50 cash ready to pay worker in the toll booth. Change will be given if needed. There's also Good to Go pass for commuters that saves money. Or pay via mail. I've always wondered where workers use the restroom because booth is tiny and vehicles are traveling fast. There are people riding bicycles, ebikes, and runners utilizing both sides of the bridge for exercise.

The best set of mountain bike trails are 15 minutes drive into the forest. My wife and I explored them once on foot and were only able to see a small segment. There were a fair number of mountain bikers enjoying the trails. The drive to the trail is part pavement, part dirt. As you drive along a dirt ridge and start to think that you are lost, it actually means you're getting close. There are a handful of other trail networks surrounding the state forest, but these seem to be focused for off-road motorcycle use. I wouldn't use them on busy weekends but they are great hiking trails on a weekday evening. Off-road motorcycling seems to be a gear intensive sport and not one easily managed quickly after work. A late summer hike might get dusty, but the views get progressively better the farther you go up. Also, these trails only appear manageable for experienced motorcyclists. That might be another reason I only saw one motorcycle at the beginning flat section and none farther up. There is one mountain biking trail network on the northern side of the state forest near the road. Unfortunately, it is downhill only. I huffed and puffed my way up part of it and was passed by a group of mountain bikers heading up together with their bikes in a pickup truck. This seemed to be the best method. I slowly walked down on the intermediate trail to test the difficulty and confirmed that it was beyond my ability. The trails in Washington generally skew towards the higher end of the difficulty level, probably because the mountains are so steep.

Kids in the campsite next to me were up half the night, talking really loud and I could hear them from INSIDE my hard sided camper. There's a guy in a battered minivan with plastic for windows camped across from me that looks like he's selling drugs because other people have pulled up and he got out and they exchanged something and then the other people went on their way right away so there's that shady aspect going on. And there are people driving through here all night long!!! if I did not have a hard sided camper, I would not be able to stay here due to the noise at night, especially. This could be such a peaceful place if people would respect it. And the other thing is the camp host? Here is so deaf that he cannot even tell what you're saying to him, I tried to talk to him and he kept saying what??? so good luck with the Campos being able to hear if people are causing noise and fractions. What a joke. and by the way, there are people camping here without a Discover pass. Tons of young people with kids, this is the kind of place where trailer trash lowlifes come with her numerous kids to teach the next hopeless generation of little snot nose, assholes how to camp. And I'm very nice positive person the fast majority of the time it takes a lot to get me in this kind of mood, would not stay here if I were you.
