I brought home…read morean approximately 10-week-old kitten that was later found to have a severe flea infestation and symptoms including sneezing, eye discharge, and yellow mucus from the nose. Within a very short time, I had to seek veterinary care and spend additional money on treatment. I called and called two days after no answer left plenty of vm never returned my call. What upset me most was the lack of support afterward. When I returned to the shelter to address my concerns, I was told they were closed, and the interaction was rude and dismissive. Instead of helping resolve the situation, the door was shut in my face while I was trying to get assistance for a sick animal. Animal shelters have a responsibility to ensure animals receive proper medical evaluation and treatment before being adopted out, especially young kittens. Families adopting pets should not have to worry about bringing home an animal that is potentially ill or heavily infested with fleas. I encourage anyone considering adopting from this shelter to ask detailed questions about veterinary records, vaccinations, flea prevention, and recent health checks before taking an animal home. I sincerely hope the shelter improves its practices so that both animals and adopters are treated with the care and respect they deserve. We even spoke with a volunteer during one visit who told us that this lack of follow-through happens often, and that many of the cats have been there for years despite people applying. It's heartbreaking to see animals waiting so long for homes while potential adopters are ignored. We ultimately adopted elsewhere last summer after never receiving a response. When we stopped in again recently, the same cat we had applied for multiple times was still there, now fully grown after nearly three years in the shelter. I truly hope this organization improves its communication and adoption process, because these cats deserve better than being left waiting indefinitely in a dark attic. Some of the wildlife are cute and entertaining, others are a nuisance. On two occasions, we've been terrorized by what we assumed were rabid raccoons, based on their bizarre and aggressive behavior. The first one came up on our deck and wouldn't leave, even after I tried to scare it off with my leaf blower. The second time, last week, a clearly very sick raccoon roamed around my property for hours, repeatedly coming right up to the house, and charging at me when I tried to shoo it away. On both occasions, we called the Plainfield Area Humane Society for help. A young lady came out in the truck with a snare and a net and managed to capture the animals and take them away. This time, she said the raccoon probably did not have rabies, but most likely had distemper. They weren't going to euthanize the animal. They would medicate it and attempt to nurse it back to health, and then release it. Healthy or not, I hope it doesn't come back here.
