We originally tried to go through adoption, but the process is so lengthy. We even fostered some dogs but their size and temperament just didn't work out for our lifestyle. I'm glad we tried rescuing first, but it's ultimately not for everyone. A lot of people have negative thoughts about pet store shopping but Shake-A-Paw is the best. We needed a calm but active puppy, who was small in size, and fit perfectly into our 1BR apartment. Meet Ellie! A 13 week old Cavapoo from Iowa. When we saw her in the store, we just knew she was the one. The sales associate who helped us was named Bryan, and he spent so much time with us. He went over everything in detail and took us step-by-step through all of the paper work. He even walked around the store with me and helped me choose all the essentials that we would need. The whole process, from walking in the door to leaving probably took a little over an hour. It's not like you just walk in, choose a dog, and leave. You have to prove your income and they call you to verify if you're a real person and to prove that all your information is factual. All medical records and breeder information as well as parental lineage was provided to us upon purchase. We got to see where she lived prior to coming to Shake-A-Paw and what her parents looked line (as well as their medical history). It was so thorough. Bryan assured us that he would give us a call at the end of the week to see how Ellie is doing. I really appreciated his kindness and professionalism. It wasn't just like he was trying to make a quick sale. He even told us stories about his own dogs, which made him appear so knowledgeable. My advice to anyone looking for a dog is this: Buy the dog that fits best into your lifestyle, don't adopt just to adopt. If you adopt a wonderful dog that works well for you, that's amazing but typically shelter and rescue dogs come with years of trauma, neglect, or abuse. It takes a certain type of person to be able to handle that and give them the life they deserve. Ellie was the best choice for us and we're so thrilled we have her as our baby now. Thank you, Shake-A-Paw, for bringing us immense joy with our darling puppy. Update after 3 weeks of getting our girl: Ellie is as sweet as can be. People are RIDICULOUS! You're buying a PUPPY! To the one reviewer who said, "They drug the dogs. I got the world's worst Pomeranian. They just bark all day long". YEAH THAT'S WHAT DOGS DO IF YOU DON'T TRAIN THEM! As for people complaining about health issues and vet expenses, that's what you signed up for! To care for the dog, no matter what. A dog is not disposable. They are hard work. These reviews are written by irresponsible dog owners. Shake-A-Paw is a reputable place to become a pet parent. Please understand, if you purchase a puppy, you will need to invest time and money for their lifetime! You need to train it and provide entertainment for it. If you don't, that is negligent and the puppy will display poor behavior. I'm almost livid at these people making such accusations against this business. Please read the positive reviews and ignore these crazy people.

However, it's been unpleasant the last handful of visits and for very simple reasons. On my most recent visit, I was the only one in the store. Upon entering, I was seen by about three employees leisurely clustered at the register area. They positively saw me and said NOTHING. Uh, okay. Hi to you all too. Of course the silence continues throughout the moderately quick shopping trip so not one offer of help or pleasantries are offered. Come checkout time, not that the amount should matter AT ALL - but I did give them a fair share of business - all they said to me was "All set?" - never mind if I found all that I needed or not, etc. If they could have simply accepted my money for my purchases without having to exchange any communication or acknowledgement of me, they definitely would have. The kicker is, at the close of sale, they hand me my receipt with a "have a nice day" and not a blip of thanks, not even in response to me wishing them a good day in return. And if the more senior, elderly looking woman off to the side of them was any form of management or owner, she saw me too but grumpily kept her mouth shut and her face remained expression-less. Company culture, even small business, comes from the top. She was obviously the antithesis of exemplary conduct. And if no management was present on-site, it is evident that they do not train, focus on, or care about simple retail business etiquette. There is absolutely zero customer service here, not even on the basic level of acknowledging a patron or thanking them for their business. Either this establishment knows zero customer service and/or they are collectively racist. A little bit of honey goes a long way! It's not that hard. Grin and bare if apathy fills your heart and you must force yourselves to be customer-friendly. This. Is. A. STORE, yes?? Want to keep bringing in business, yes?? They have rightfully lost my business and I will be passing on the word of their lackluster etiquette.

MatchDog Rescue has given me and my bf our first love, Hewitt…read more Before attending the event in Atco, we were given a phone call with a proper run down on how the event would work so we were not confused when we got there. They are extremely communicative, and the events are usually held on Saturdays, but the transport that was bringing the dogs in had troubles and the event ultimately had to be moved to Sunday. I had my phone call at about 11:15 and about 1 PM hours later I was informed about the date change. It is not a typical adoption shelter that I have been to in the past. At the event, there is a ticket system, as in, the earlier you get there the earlier you will be called. While you wait you mingle with the volunteers and the dogs. You get a vibe on which dog feels like the best fit for you. However, be mindful that the crew with MatchDog Rescue does their due diligence and wants the best for EVERY SINGLE DOG. We went to the event with a very specific dog in mind. One that was on the medium/large end. However, the staff that reviewed our application and lifestyle, let us know that the dog might not be the best fit for us in terms of training and size of our home. While it was disappointing to hear, we knew at heart we wanted what was best for the dog and us. As mentioned before there is a mingling period while waiting to be called on by staff. During this period you can meet dogs of all ages, sizes, and all types OUTSIDE of dog cages. We had met several different dogs during this period, just to name a few that I can remember, Nevada, Hewitt, Cassidy, Dukie, and Garret. We bonded with several dogs early on, but with our hearts set on a specific dog, we just enjoyed their presence. However, after being informed that the dog we had our hearts set on was not a good fit for us, we knew which of the many dogs we met during the mingling period we wanted to go on a walk with. We asked if Hewitt was a good fit for us, confirmed he was, took him on a little stroll around the lot, and knew that our hearts were set on him. We went through the process of adopting him and each volunteer we worked with, remembered Hewitt and always told us how he was such a great dog and a cute little snippet or fun fact about Hewitt. There was never a doubt in my mind that Hewitt was not loved under their care. On our way out with Hewitt, the last volunteer that we worked with walked us to our car, ensuring that Hewitt was buckled in and safe and had their very loving and sad goodbyes with each other. Hewitt has been with us for about a week. We are a very calm, but active couple and Hewitt matches exactly that for us. When we are relaxing, he is relaxing. When we are running, Hewitt is right there running with us. It is not something that I considered when I was looking into adopting a dog, but I am extremely grateful the staff at MDR let us know before adopting a dog. If ever in the future I am looking for a second dog, there is no doubt in my mind that MDR will be the first adoption agency I look into.

Their volunteers coordinate with partner rescues in areas with an abundance of overcrowded, high-kill shelters. They travel to these areas, rescue and transport the pooches to New Jersey, where dedicated fosters await their arrival. The fosters nurture, care for and partner with veterinary professionals to ensure that the rescued pups are primed to thrive in their new "Furever" homes.
