The store help were extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. I purchased a number of spices that I had not been able to purchase in quite some time and I was just amazed by the variety of offerings. In particular, they had some unique salts and peppers. I purchased Shichimi Togarashi which is a salt free blend consisting of sesame seeds, orange peel, poppy seeds, paprika, chinese chilis, szechwan pepper, ginger and nori. This spice is used to season soups, noodles, meats and stir fries. I also purchased Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Spice made with cayenne, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, cinnamon, garlic and other spices. It promises to bring spicy, flavorable heat to my dishes and I can't wait to try it. I am really trying to eat less salt, so I purchased another salt free alternative called "Summit County" which is a salt free, pepper based seasoning that is aromatic and bittersweet that has citrus notes and an umami flavor. Last, but not least, I also purchased Black Onyx Chocolate Sugar which I simply can't wait to use on poached warm pears (I canned 50 jars of pears last season). It is a salt free, sugar based blend that is chocolately, woody, floral and cinnamonny! Can you say yum? Not in Colorado? Don't despair! This is a top notch shop. I always receive above and beyond customer service. Caryn is passionate and highly knowledgeable. I was getting this custom spice blend made by Hello Fresh but didn't know the ingredients. I told her what it tasted like and what it was put on, and she gave me samples of two spices. Both were close, but one was spot on. Later they delivered this spice again with the ingredients listed. I compared it to the original and WOW. They are practically the same! And she did all of that by just me telling her the taste and what it was usually added to. read more

Was walking through the city showing my mom who is visiting the sights and we saw this place and decided to check it out, for which I'm grateful we did. The place has so many different flavors from all around the world and for different cooking styles. Coming in, they have al.sot every spice available for smelling and if you feel like it tasting them before you buy them, that way you know what your buying before hand. The staff was friendly and able to answer any questions my mom and I had as well as getting my mom to sign up for their membership. Plus, I got a free small bag of seasoning blend since it's my bday month and I'm in the loyalty program. Also? The four cheese blend I got as a gift for a friend isn't yellow; no cheeto fingers for them! The customer service rep was super patient as I tasted a bunch of blends, looking for just the right one. If there was a 6th star, I'd give it. I told the CSR how I was upset about the "new" labels since I was trying to have matching spice bottles on display. Every week, the small team grinds the seasonings and spices in small batches and you can take as much as you choose. IE: 1/2 oz. of Cinnamon is only $1.00 and imagine how tasty and how healthful your baked goods will be with that little bit of loveliness. They also sell extracts in many flavors. If you're a baker (I am! I am!) and you want to add exotica to your next cookie, pop in and grab a bit of Lime or Kiwi extract! I can't say enough fabulous things about Savory Spice. Every time I visited, I'd pick up a new spice combination to take home and experiment with. It was close enough to walk over when my chili wasn't tasting right and I need to correct it with some spice. I discovered the beautify of Za'taar lamb pyramids thanks to this place! It made my food so much better. The spices are all of great quality and are quite fresh. Even though I've moved away, I still order my spices from them online. The shipping cost isn't too bad (especially since I ordered a lot at once), and the order arrived quickly. This is all good news, since the restaurant offerings in my new town aren't so good. I rarely eat out anymore, so I need to keep things interesting in the kitchen. Savory Spice helps me do that. Hooray! read more

The best part of the store is that you can try every single spice in your hand and lick it up... Can't be that great on sanitation, but it was a nice appetizer.... I was going to town on the pine nut pesto cheese one, and I also really enjoyed the blue cheese spice. I might have eaten half a pound of cheese! I bought a friend their Fire Eater set of their best Cajon spices and it did not disappoint. Best price in town I've seen for sapharon, too. I highly recommend their powdered honey. We've been shopping at Savory Spice since it opened - we haven't purchased spices anywhere else since. I'm not sure I can add much to what has already been said by my fellow yelpers who have also awarded Savory Spice five stars. Not only are the spices and spice blends the freshest you can find anywhere, but they are less expensive than what you can buy at the grocery store. Also, once you buy a spice in bottle, you can save the bottle and just buy small bags to replenish your supply. What a great concept! Recently Mike and Janet (owners) were on an episode of Food Network's Paula Dean show. Not only did they do a great job (they should have their own show) but they really brought out the importance spices in cooking. Whoa, so pretty much everyone knows and loves this place already.... I bought 1/2 oz. of cardamom here for $2.85. I have been searching high and low for cardamom at grocery stores, and the only place I even saw it was Walmart and it was $14 for 2 oz (and obviously not nearly as fresh). I have never used it in a recipe before so it's nice being able to buy a small (cheap) amount to try it out before committing to a whole jar. I also bought hickory salt, Jamaican jerk chicken spice rub, and some cumin. I only came in for the cardamom... but you literally can't get in and out without browsing and smelling... and buying. There is just too much good shit in this shop! They apparently also film a Food Network show right in the store! I forgot the name already but it's "spice" something or other and it's on Saturday mornings at 7:30am. How cool is that? read more

Great little spice shop! I wondered into this store on accident and couldn't leave without grab some spice to take back to the East coast with me. The employees are absolutely fantastic, none of this apathetic crap you get with employees are other store. They are actually trained and familiar with the spices they carry and are more than happy to help. I'm guilty of buying spices and other herbs at WalMart of Target so when I find a legit spice place, I'm like a kid in a candy store thinking of future kitchen creations. I couldn't help sticking my nose into just about every single spice in this place-not only did some clear up my nose, others could be used to enhances pheromones like the lavender vanilla bean. Great selection of spices with knowlegable sales staff ready to pounce if you make the slightest facial expression showing you have a question on your mind. Everything is fresh and clean. The GF and I bought a basket full of random combined spices for spaghetti, traditional oriental (like a rug...i'm asian don't be mad) spices, and a few other oddities (Bleu cheese powder, Horseradish, Shallot salt). Can't say enough about the customer service and the overall feeling of the really nice area. Oh yeah and great prices...what you'll find at the market for $9 -$10 you can get fresh here for under $5. Loved this shop! I could spent hours wandering around looking at and smelling the spices. The shop is so cute, inviting, and well organized, and the woman working there couldn't have been friendlier. This is the MECCA. Walked in here from the streets cause of the aroma!!! Name a spice and they'll have 6 variations of it. They create their own spice creations as well. They let you taste each spice and you can either buy a bottle or have them weigh out the amount of seasonings you want. A whole bottle of a seasoning was only $5!! The same as a cheap bottle at the local grocery store! The staff was super friendly and helpful! Can't wait to cook up a storm with my new found goodies! read more

After cruising a lap through the Savory Spice Shop and sniffing whatever struck my fancy, I decided it was time to get serious. "What do you have in the way of cumin?" I asked one of the girls. Well, not only did she prounounce it all correct and Food Networky ("coomin," whereas I'd said "cue-min" like the rookie I am), she boasted that their fresh-ground cumin was considered by those In The Know to be some of the best cumin in the whole U-S-of-A... and THEN she showed me each and every cumin-containing blend on the shelves, plus recipes and suggestions ta' boot. Now there's a girl who knows her cumin. She also steered me towards a delicious Greek spice blend (silly me, thinking I could stump her by asking for Greek!), which I later discovered, though it's prime purpose is as a meat rub, makes a delicious dip when added to sour cream with a splash of lemon juice. Mt. Eolus is its name, and being fantastic is its game. Opa! What a cool place! Not only does it smell delicious (though their employees must be smell-dead by the time they get off their shifts... you know, like brain-dead? like after you've worked a long, hard day? nevermind...), you can find literally ANY spice or spice blend you want here. And some you never even knew you wanted! And what's even cooler... the aforementioned smell-dead employees really know their stuff. Bonus: you can buy spices by the ounce for cheap, cheap, cheap! What a great idea... making a sampler pack for one of those $10-limit White Elephant office gift exchange thingies. So much better than another cheesy mug with cats on it. read more

People with food allergies: BEWARE! I've been pissed off at this place since they poisoned my girlfriend at one of their tastings. They had a chicken something or other with a sauce on it and when asked if it was gluten-free she was met with an immediate "oh yes, everything we're sampling today is gluten free!" Welp, come to find out after she ate it that oh, it was some kind of beer sauce... you know, beer, that beverage with malted grains. When she brought it up to the person giving out the samples, her concern was met with a giggled "oopsie" followed by a blank stare. Luckily it was just a little piece, but the poor thing was pretty much wrecked for a couple days because of it. It could have turned out much, much worse. I understand some people don't get the trend of yuppie moms loading up their Lexus SUVs with gluten-free stuff from Whole Foods because they read in a magazine or heard from someone in their "mommies club" that it's healthier or something. I am one of those people. But there are people who have an actual medical condition (celiac disease) that comes with actual repercussions like any other food allergy. For the people handing out this stuff to not know what's in it or to think it's cute to poison someone through their ignorance is absolutely unforgivable and ghastly. I've always trained my employees that it's OK to not know the answer, but it's not OK to just make stuff up. I'll never hold it against someone who responds with my inquiries with "I don't know, but hang on and let me find out for you", but to hurt someone with false information is not cool at all. Savory has pretty much guaranteed that I will never spend my money there, since they don't know what they're selling and think it's cute to physically harm someone with their products. Alright, I admit it, I was introduced to this place not by my own explorations of Denver or through the recommendation of friends, but rather by the Food Network. I'm a Food Network junkie, and they did a great profile of this place. But whatever it takes to introduce people to this incredible locally owned business. Sure enough, the next week I was in the neighborhood for a happening at the nearby House of Commons English tea room and cruised by the store. The Savory Spice Shop is not hard to find. That doesn't mean that it's easy to spot--it's easy to smell. Even when it's closed you can smell the sweetness oozing through the door. You are going to find exotic and not-so-exotic spices here to jazz up your culinary excursions, and they're fresher than anything you're going to get at Safeway. This place is a wet dream for anyone who's ever dreamed of having their own cooking show, of which I'm guilty. But hey, you don't need to be Emeril to dig this place. read more

This place could get me to cook more. They have too many awesome sounding spices to ignore. Special bonus to the 14er spices. Anyway, they are located in a great neighborhood. I like their organization inside and how there are so many sampling spices. I'm not much of a cook, but their spice sets make great gifts like the one time I gave my brother one of their grilling spice sets. That gift might need to be replenished in the near future. Their salt collection was inspirational with flavors. The standout for me was the Italian Black Truffle Sea Salt. Other than that, I really like how they do their crystallized ginger there. Nice flat slivers of ginger not heavily sugared - delicious and less messy than the cubed varieties. read more

What an amazing store! The Superb: Excellent selection of herbs and spices. I was thrilled to find Kaffir citrus leaves here. A fantastic assortment of peppers and sea salts. The chile selection was also jaw-dropping. The staff was very helpful and offered tips on where to find recipes and how to use various spices we had never heard of. On top of it all, superb prices. The Average: The store was a bit difficult to maneuver, but that's probably because we were just there on a Saturday afternoon and it was slammed. The Horrid: NOTHING! I have been a flag bearer for Penzey's Spices for years, but after today's trip to Savory Spice Shop, I am a convert. This is the spice headquarters of Denver. Why go anywhere else when every single spice you could ever want is all in one building? Being a chef myself, I live for spices, spice and seasoning. This place had everything, including ghost chili powder, which is extremely hard to come by. I saw some spices here I had never seen before. Just about every spice has a taster bottle so you can smell and taste the spice before purchasing. The employees are extremely nice. The one thing I would change is that they are kid of pushy about selling the spices. read more

Damn son! This place is loved like no other apparently. For a store that has one and only one product - condiments - I'm surprised at the generous out-pouring of luv. Then again, upon entering the store, your olfactory senses go insane...! This store is hilarious. It seems more suited for 15th century Europe, what with their zealous love of seasonings that make food last for more than a day. Still, this place knows their spices (and not in the spice channel way. Get your mind out of the gutter people.)...so if you are into culinary experimentation, this is your store. I've been to my fair share of spice shops as I travel around the country, and while each of them has their own unique brand of awesomeness, this Savory Spice Shop is certainly among my favorites. The first time you go, you'll get the spiel about how to taste each and every spice they have (and to dump the extra on the floor, cause that is how they roll), as well as noshing on freeze dried corn to clear your taste buds. Then, you get to explore. Try as many different things as you want and spend hours in the store, or hop in and grab exactly what you want and be out the door in just a minute or two. Their staff is always incredibly helpful, whether in helping you find the right things, decide between two blends, or in picking out gift packs (I went in today to get a couple for my partner's family). They also do gift cards, which I gave out to my wing people/attendants at our wedding (perfect for anyone from chefs to bakers to college kids trying to figure out how to jazz up mac and cheese). We really love their Pesto Parmesan Sprinkle, and their Black Truffle Sea Salt is delicious and price wise on par with other shops I've visited. The Four Corners Peppercorns are great for a pepper grinder, and their array of curries, salts, spice blends, flavored sugars and more are unsurpassed. If you just want a plain ol' herb like cumin, basic, etc, they have those too - freshly ground every week. WAY better than the spices you get in the grocery. My only wish? That they would also have a awesome loose tea selection, but I have my own sources for that, so it isn't a deal breaker.
