Sawyers has stayed on a side street of Torrington for years, so they're doing something right to survive. They do have a parking lot on the side, and tables/chairs for the warm weather. We were greeted by two lion statues. The interior seating are high tops and booths. There are single restrooms, with the toilet very close to your nose. You should stand straight up. The garlic parm chicken tenders were delicious, and the breading stayed strong even after being coated. The burger was definitely warm and juicy, it went with the overall bar. read more

A few areas of opportunity for Sawyers. Thursday night vibes were comforting, intimate crowd and plenty of patrons, but didn't get the attention I was hoping for. Took a solid ten minutes to get noticed, but no real waitstaff. Bartender was running all over, back and forth, serving tables and tending the bar. Felt really bad for her. But then long periods of nothing happening. Took about 20 minutes to get our burgers. Food was served, but no silverware on the table, had to get up and ask for them at the bar. The food: not sure I love the herbs on the fries. It said truffle fries but I didn't get any truffle flavor whatsoever. Burger was a little too well done for a medium, but the quality of the meat was good. The burger bun on top felt cold, while the insides were toasty. That was odd. Bacon felt like it was prepped much earlier in the day, so it was more like beef jerky, and didn't have a soft freshly cooked texture. Overall, good experience, but I was hoping that this was the "IT" burger place for me, when I get the hankering for a burger. My buddy had a Salmon burger. He said it was excellent, but also complained the "truffle fries' were not truffle fries at all. Next time I will try something different. I really like the vibe here and the doors being open wide gave it a very NYC/Brooklyn small neighborhood vibe. read more

I want to start off by saying this was my first experience at this bar/restaurant and has become the best experience ive ever had while eating out. To begin with, the vibe as soon as you walk in gives off homey, clean and comfortable, and doesn't initially feel like you're walking into a bar. we were greeted immediately upon entering and took our seats. Kyle was our bartender/waiter and to say he went above and beyond to ensure a positive experience for us is an understatement. The drinks he made were both visually pleasing and delicious, the food was fresh and flavorful and the atmosphere was pleasant. We ordered an appetizer and they did not have enough of the specific item in stock so they made what they could and Kyle so kindly took it off our bill. At the end of the night before we left, Kyle also offered a green tea shot on the house! VERY diverse clientele but most people are friendly. Sawyer's is one of the few watering holes in Torrington that's actually still open past 9:30PM. Very friendly, attentive bar staff who recall your "usual" even if you only stop in twice monthly or so. Owner is chill. Nice interior with long copper topped bar, exposed brick, tin ceiling, wooden floors, booths & tables. Bar prices are more than reasonable. Great spot to have a beer or drink from early evening until midnight (depending on crowd size). Highly recommended! read more

We came to Torrington, Connecticut to see a performance at the Warner Theatre, and found Sawyer's Bar and Grill for dinner. WOW. Their chef is amazing. I had shrimp and grits that were beautifully presented and delicious to eat. I ordered the beet salad and cannot imagine anything more delicious, again with amazing presentation. My friend ordered the mushroom risotto, which was also delicious! We wished that we had room for one of their desserts. Very casual ambience with happy patrons playing magnetic darts in the back. Great time spent visiting Sawyer's! My friend and I came to Morris to spend a weekend and after reading the reviews of neighborhood restaurants, we decided on having dinner there. The customer service upon arrival was very warm! The servers/bartenders Brianna and Hannah were very attentive. After asking what preference of alcohol we liked, Hannah hooked my friend and I up with two different types of rum cocktails. She even circled back around to get our feedback on how they tasted. We loved that she took the extra time to do that despite it being a busy evening. For food, I ordered the fish tacos and my friend had the wings. We also split an order of truffle fries. I found that the truffle fries weren't really what we'd expect truffle fries to be like. They were super deep fried and they lacked the shaved or shredded Parmesan cheese and sprinkled dry basil leaves that we're used to getting it with when we order it in NYC. While I know that CT and NYC are two different culinary scenes, I still feel like the truffle fries at Sawyer's should be revised and made with a little more love. It wasn't giving truffle fries at all. Just tasted like fries that were extra dry and based in a bit of truffle oil. My friend tore up the wings so it's safe to say that Sawyer's mastered that recipe! My fish tacos were also delicious! I would've liked a bit more seasoning on the fish but I need to cut back my sodium intake anyways so I'll accept it for what it was. Thanks for having us, Sawyer's! Would highly recommend! P.S. One of the worst burgers I have ever had. It was super dry and tasteless. The bun was too big for the burger and I had to cut off the ends of the bun so when I bit into it I wouldn't just get all bread. There was only two people working. One in the front to wait on customers and one in the kitchen to do all the cooking. Due to this it took over 30 minutes to get our food (there were only two of us). Our drinks got warm and watered down due to the ice melting (no air conditioning). There was so many good reviews so maybe just went during a bad time. We've enjoyed several good dinners here, and the other night attending a fundraising event we tasted their clam chowder - and it was delicious, as good a chowder as we've enjoyed in many years (and we are definitely chowderheads). It was packed with fresh clams, not too many potatoes and had real substance to it yet was not at all gooey. That's the good news. The bad is that when we went for dinner recently they were out of the chowder. But -- the additional good news is that we had a fine meal anyway. We like Sawyer's and have no hesitation in recommending it. Basically it's a neighborhood bar. Nothing fancy, a little on the dark side, the furnishings a bit aged, but it has a warm, neighborly vibe, and the people who run it are friendly. And did we mention the bartender is good? They serve nice drinks and have a decent run of beers on tap. And their food is so much better than you might expect from a local pub. In fact, we think it has some of the best food to be found in Torrington, and that's not intended as cheap praise. We believe the food is freshly prepared, attending being paid to culinary nuances. Take the shrimp and grits, the crustaceans absolutely lovely to the taste and the crusted grits and flavorings a yummy addition. The chicken curry bowl with rice had just the right amount of heat for us, and the fish 'n chips was a huge serving of good chicken with fries. And their truffle fries have a little crunch and are good to the last bite. And did we mention the bartender? There are some entrees that change depending on availability and probably some of the chef's wishes; we continue to pick the wrong evening and miss the jerk chicken. And the chowder. Prices are ok, nothing out of reason. And though we didn't order it on our latest trip, they make a damn fine burger. They do ID let me say that again they do ID people two girls were thrown out, the loaded fries I ordered them without tomatoes was beyond freaking amazing Like I found my fries from heaven seriously and the Chicken Wings my half ordered I forgot the name I'm sorry were great they had a kick to them but were good. Poor service. Watered down drinks. Long wait time. I went last night for karaoke, if I could rate karaoke separately that would be 5 stars. Not to mention nothing was stocked and had run out of majority of drinks. Shocking considering it wasn't overly busy. The only way I got a drink was by basically hanging over the bar waving the guy down and even then it was still a. Struggle. Clearly it's a bar that only focuses on their regulars instead of trying to gain more customers for the future. I am a bartender. I have come here for the last 2 weeks for karaoke, this was honestly the absolute worst bartending I have ever witnessed. Honestly. I come back because Kelli is awesome, but it's painful not getting a drink. Like absolutely painful, I tripped and exorbanant amount last week on my first round. The bartender came back with change I told him that's for you, maybe you'll see me next time I want a drink. For the amount of people that were in the building the wait time for drinks was outlandish. I would come in there not knowing where anything is and outrun the shit out of the 2 guys behind the bar! Something needs to be done, when you'll you like a real bartender I'll come in and work. Pretty good food overall. Service was also very friendly and fast. My biggest complaint was the wings were undercooked a bit (not unsafe let me be clear)and wet. Not crispy at all. My burger was fine and my wife liked her food. But we probably wont be back because as we were leaving the entire kitchen staff was outside all at once sitting around staring at us like we shouldn't have been there. It was a weird vibe. Best dining experience I've had in a long time. Food decadent, delicious, cooked perfectly and had some lean options along with some great wings and creative cocktails--a hard combo to find most times. Our bartender/Server was delightful making an enjoyable time. The place was clean, huge windows wide open let a nice breeze in and it felt like we were outside but not. There was music, but it wasn't obtrusive and conversing therefore, was pleasant and easy. The chef/ owner made a point to come out and greet some diners-- nice touch! We ordered pork, mashed potatoes with greens, Asian sweet chili & sweet spicy wings, and the beet/goat cheese souffle with mixed greens and shrimp. I love this place. Everything about this place show intention and purpose. Much of the decor is reclaimed wood and steel. It's very homelike. The Sailor remembers going here before but I don't. We both had fish and chips. Portion sizes are huge! Oh-My-Goodness. Fish was cooked separately from the fries, which I love because the items don't taste like whatever the person before you ate. Fish was fried light and not greasy at all. The star of the show was the crinkle-cut french fries with truffle oil and thyme. Both the sailor and I were thoroughly impressed. The chef Victor came out and ask about how things were and we couldn't rave enough. You could really tell he put his heart in every plate. I would expect nothing less from a fellow Boricua from Ponce. I'm just mad that we weren't there on time for the Pernil he had in the oven. The sabor y amor -show in the food to the highest degree. This is a definite diamond in the "rough" with the rough being a less than stellar surrounding area. Driving by the place can be very misleading, so, park that car on the side lot and come on it and be delighted by the brick accents, the wood tables and very clean dining area. I was blown away when I walked inside here. The menu is a bit limited but what they do offer is excellent and well above, in quality and taste, whatever you're used to receiving at other restaurants for a similar entree. The salmon burger was delicious as is the chicken sandwich. The truffle fries are delightful and I didn't have a regular burger yet, but it is a fresh, cooked to order burger and not some frozen patty they slapped on the grill. The food here is what you would expect at a high end restaurant and the ambiance inside here reflects that as well. I come to Waterbury every few months and I will definitely be back here. Burgers were all stale bun not burger. Only had cheddar for cheese. Waitress/bartender was too busy talking to guys at bar then bothering to check on tables. Overheard the table next to us complaining how their order was wrong too. Fries were double fried but tasted like oil was old. Had to beg for ketchup and salt and pepper was never brought to table, not to mention got charged full price for drinks was told it was happy hour for a dollar off each. Not happy "y'all". Torrington is something of a dead zone for good food. Sawyer's offers some of the best in town. Quality is consistent, and as other reviewers say, service can be a bit slow depending on when you go. I both like that the burger buns are fairly thin because then you don't just fill up on bread, but they kind of fall apart a bit, which can be frustrating. Fries are amazing - salmon burger is good, albeit a touch spicy, which I could have done without. I got the steak last time I was there and it was really good, although it was a bit fattier of a cut than i would prefer, and the lack of good lighting means it was hard to cut around it. Honestly - we used to drive to Simsbury to go to Plan B for burgers, now we just go here. The burgers are better and it's a heck of a lot closer. I only wish they'd expand the menu slightly, but I can understand why they keep it small. Maybe do some more weekly specials? That might help mix things up a bit. read more

What a great find!!! Owner Julian was very friendly. My boyfriend had a burger he liked very much which had a bun that looked like an arepa. His truffle fries were sooooo good. Unfortunately his Diet Coke was flat...whomp-waaaa. But he chose not to tell them so it wasn't like they could have remedied that. The Mac and cheese was excellent and my fish tacos were very flavorful and just perfect. They were just opening and so there was a weird cleaning product smell which my boyfriend thought was my perfume so that wasn't great but it was at opening time so it is understandable.
