Located just behind Old Town on Frauenplatz, it's a little off the beaten track, but not too hard to find. This Bavarian gem has been around for over 125 years. The food was so good. Here you will find traditional German, Bavarian food. We stopped by for lunch and it was packed with mostly locals. We were seated a large table with 3 other couples who were all from the area. One person brought his dog who kept running under the table to sniff my leg. Minus the dog, this was a treat and everyone was so nice. We even toasted when the cold Augustiner beer arrived. Again, we were told to order the sausages so we did. I ordered the 6 and my husband ordered the 8 sausages with sauerkraut. These looked like what we call breakfast sausage, they're thin but pack a a ton of flavor and were delicious, especially with the fresh sauerkraut. The staff was friendly and helpful with an English version menu. The atmosphere was cool and very authentic. Exactly what we were looking for when in Munich.

We got the Glöckl Platter which was a mixed plate of sausages. I could not decide which sausage was my favorite because I liked all three. The sausages in Germany taste more pure and less processed than the ones from the United States...and of course they are better in Germany! The side order of roasted potatoes was also delicious, with a crispy bottom, kind of like a cross between hash browns and home fries. The portions were smaller than other beer gardens I have been to though (1 star off). I was not familiar with German beers, so just told the waitstaff the glass size (1/2 L or 1L) and one was selected for me. It was light with some hops -- great with sausages and for summertime. We sat outside at a table squeezed between many other tables, but did not mind the crowd. It was great for people-watching in a busy part of town on a relaxing summer evening.

I stopped by here by myself maybe around 6pm on a Monday and was seated at a table because the bar was full, but told I only had an hour since they were full for reservations. That was totally fine and knew I wouldn't be more than that. If you are coming here with other people, you definitely need to make a reservation. The servers are dressed in traditional German clothes which is a very cool touch. Everyone I spoke to also spoke English. I ordered the schnitzel and whichever beer they recommended with it. I am typically NOT a beer person, but of course I had to try one and whatever this was, was very good. The schnitzel was so crispy and also very delicious. Highly recommend this place!!

The service at Haufbrauhaus was terrible. I ordered a seasonal beer and it was fantastic and the outside seating was wonderful on a perfect day. Our server was awesome and spoke perfect english. I ordered the charcuterie board and it had a couple of hummus scoops and a beef stick and this scoop of stuff that was way too rich for me with pieces of butter in it, but the Germans love it. The pretzels that came with it were great and the cream cheese scoop went perfectly on the pretzel. One of the best meals in Munich, give it a try.

With a reservation made the same day through Open Table, we did not have any wait upon arriving to be seated. The service was nice, and the food was good. The prices were fair for the portion sizes. I would recommend Wirtshaus for a good, traditional German meal. Wirtshaus Zum Straubinger has a nice selection of drinks, including German beer. The menu is mostly traditional German food but does have some lighter options. I had a fantastic side salad with my meal - the Pork Knuckle, which I was really excited to try and wanted to order at least once on our trip. This was the only time I tried the dish, but it was delicious; the outside was crispy and the inside was meaty. I would highly recommend this, and the dumplings that came on the side were good too. My other two dining companions ordered duck, which was also excellent. Wirtshaus was a pleasant dinner in a cozy atmosphere and traditional German food. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation through Open Table.
