At first we tried to do it ourselves by finding family recommended architect to draw prints for us for submission and whatever else the city wants. Then we tried to find contracts and they either stuck up their noses at us or didn't even bother showing up at the appointment. Finding a trustworthy contractor is hard. So I looked up Yelp and found Mr. Parrague and initially contacted one of the reviewer, Henry, because he offered to shed more light on his experience. He was so kind and highly recommened Parrague Construction. And I'm living in another country and my Mom's English isn't fluent enough to handle this kind of matter. So I called Mr. Parrague and he made me feel safe. He is a one stop shop because I wasn't sure if the city was going to ask to redo the blueprints or not. He was very professional, on-time, and does not push for extra things just to make more money, in fact it's the opposite. He is tough, which you need to be when dealing with the city, and very experienced. He will go out of his way to help you. His crew is clean and his assistant is also kind and very communicative, but Mr. Parrague usually is your main point of contact. He likes to handle the calls himself. Once my mom called around 5pm saying they installed the garage door wrong (they did not) and I thought she got locked out of the house. I had to call Mr. Parrague from outside the country (Skype) and he said he will go straight to my house after his meeting which was an hour away from my house bc they had my spare key. I told my mom and realized she wasn't locked out. So whether it was installed correctly or not, it was NOT an emergency. I quickly messaged Mr. Parrague because it can be dealt the next day. I didn't want him to get in an accident trekking across LA. He understood and STILL showed up! This is now probably 7pm. They figured out that it was my Mom who didn't understand how the new garage door worked....So I am so thankful for them for their work and for dealing with the City and get me approved and case closed. I ultimately decided to go with Potato Construction Inc., not only because of their competitive pricing but also because Sales Manager Patrick demonstrated his deep knowledge, provided a very comprehensive package detailing all the fees, and showed me comparable comps. The development of the ADU started in August, with Victor Liu stepped in as the project coordinator. He was knowledgeable and professional, and he was on top of everything. Throughout the entire project, he always responded promptly to any of my calls or texts, which was wonderful during the process to have someone so responsive. The best part is that Victor managed to pass all the city inspections on the first try, significantly reducing the overall timeframe of the project. They also surrounded themselves with crazy talent so you are getting the A-Team no matter who you are working with at o42. You typically have some good and some bad in any business relationship, but with o42 I can't say enough good things about working with them. The only bad thing I could remember (and this took a lot of digging) is that Ben doesn't wash his fruit before he eats them. Weirdo. We had an idea and a vision, and Stephanie was able to incorporate all our crazy (cheap-ass) ideas and transform a 70-year-old shanty of a building into a warm, secure, and striking preschool. Everything we wanted, they delivered with the extra added level of attention that can only be produced by people who genuinely care. In addition to the design of our school, the o42 team was also tasked with leading our construction project. Anyone that's ever done any sort of construction knows that nothing ever goes as planned. There are always issues to resolve, landmines to navigate -- something doesn't line up, something doesn't fit, or something just doesn't smell right. Of all the things that o42 does right (and there are so many), this is one area where they really shine. Any time we hit a bump in the road, Ben would take a couple minutes, put on his "hold my beer" face and churn out 2-3 solutions for you; he'll give you the cheapest approach, quickest approach, inspector-approved approach,.... boom boom boom. They've seen it all, and they can handle anything. Our project took several months to complete and they had as much gusto about the project on day 150 as they did on day 1.
