Hamilton Square, NJ - this is a sweet little 30-acre botanical garden and park that's free to visit, featuring specimens collected by gardening enthusiast Frederick Sayen from his world travels. The garden was created in 1912 when Sayen purchased the land with his wife Anne Mellon (of the Mellon family) and built a home in the Arts and Crafts style. The azaleas and rhododendrons are especially magnificent. We visited during the Azalea Festival over Mother's Day weekend, and the flowers were in full colorful splendor. There are ponds, gazebos, and walking trails around the property. My favorite are the wooded trails at one end of the park, but they aren't marked so you could end up wandering around trying to find the exit. Tip: you can find GPS map tracks in AllTrails and Gaia to stay oriented. read more

Beautiful gardens with no fee to enter. I found it a little hard to navigate since there weren't any signs as to which path lead to which directions. Some paths led to the roads to exit the garden to the nearby neighborhoods. Mostly gravel paths made it difficult to push a stroller. I chose the coldest and windiest day in November to have my engagement photos taken at Sayen House & Gardens. Despite this, the property was still charming with the fall foliage that remained. We had the entire park to ourselves, with the exception of one woman walking her dog. It's free to visit and there's adequate parking. You can tell the gardens are well-kept and maintained throughout the year. I can only imagine how much more beautiful it is in the spring and summer. The park consists of mostly gravel paths, which was easy for us, but if you have open toe shoes in the warmer months, this is something to be mindful of. One of the bridges was blocked off with caution tape, so that was disappointing but we snagged some pretty cute photo ops in other parts of the park. The plan for my next visit is to bring a blanket and have a picnic. It's the perfect place for it. read more

Only had time for superficial exploration. It's very pretty. The parking lot is a nightmare! I'd advise trying to figure out whether you can park outside and walk in. Inside the park there were an endless stream of people taking prom pictures. I don't begrudge them that. However their blocking the walkways and acting like it would be an imposition on them to at some point move is a bit tiresome. Look people are rude and self centered. What can you do! read more

We had a beautiful small wedding at Sayen House and Gardens in late April. Our ceremony in the brown gazebo, photos around the pond, and bridge were magical, and a small catered dinner in Sayen House was completely lovely. Our Caterers - "New Jersey Weddings and Events" were over the top excellent - Joann was so flexible and thoughtful, wanting everything to be lovely and just right, as if we were family. The food itself was really delicious and beautifully presented - also reasonably priced for all that was included. We had some food allergies in our group which were handled very attentively and thoughtfully with no extra charge.We really could not have been more pleased! The Gardens themselves are a hidden gem for strolling in the Springtime, especially when the azaleas are in bloom. read more

Wow, this is why New Jersey is called the Garden State. The writing is on the wall when you come visit here. Me and my girl had fun visiting here. Getting away from everyone and everything to enjoy nature. Its not a huge place, but it is a beautiful spot to get away and unwind. Love the flowers and roses. This is a hidden gem in Hamilton Township, a beautiful, well maintained botanical preserve. We visited in April with rhododendrons, azaleas, wisteria, and dogwoods in bloom, along with countless daffodils, columbine and other spring flowers. Walking the paths through the woods is delightful. There's seating along the way. Architectural details like wooden bridges add to the rustic enjoyment. Paths are well maintained but unpaved. There's a small lake, a gazebo, and restrooms. Parking and admission are free. read more

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP: For a seriously gorgeous garden and park experience, check out Sayen House and Gardens! A beautiful scene that comes to life in the spring and summer, this sanctuary is a peaceful spot to follow the paths through the flowers, trees, rock formations, and ponds. Leashed dogs are allowed everywhere but the Sayen House. Free admission too! The plant life comes from all over the world and is professionally cared for by groundskeepers. Sayen Gardens is a great little find tucked away in unassuming Hamilton, NJ. It was brought to my attention by the Mother's Day Azalea event recently posted on Yelp by Katarina. Unfortunately, the weather for mother's day was predicted to be a downpour (which it was), so I had the foresight to take my mom on the Saturday before. And, she loved it. It's small, yet lots of great plants and flowers packed into the space along with gazebos, fountains and bridges. There are some trails, which we did not venture onto, because things were a bit muddy. It's a beautiful place for photographs. On the day we were there, there were people taking graduation cap and gown photos and communion photos. I think people also do wedding shots here. The best part, it's all free! Sayen House is open certain days during the year for tours. However, you can rent the property for weddings and other events. read more

Even in the true dead of winter, this park is beyond beautiful! From little bridges to trails to nowhere, this is a wonderful place to spend a bit of time and go for a walk. As cold as it was, the park has lots of people walking around and so. many. dogs. Basically my heaven. I can only imagine how wonderful and magical this park will be come spring time and cannot wait to make a return visit. There is an old house that looks like it is undergoing some construction with a great little backyard. I know they do events and think, in the right season, this would be such a lovely little spot. It's about 15 to downtown Princeton, one of my favorite areas in NJ, which makes this little park that much more fantastic. read more

I don't know why I didn't know this place when I was living nearby. The park is beautiful, such a (hidden) gem to explore. There is a main walkpath but you can also go into some part of the woods a little bit. A few groups were doing photo sessions. read more

What a fairytale-like place! I for-see many more trips here. I took many pictures & was oohing & ahhh-ing throughout our entire visit. It is truly a beautiful park! On this 22nd day of April (2018), so many trees were blossoming & many daffodils were already out for all to see & enjoy. Besides beautiful flowers, gazebos & water fountains adorn the park too. Vince told me that many people take pictures here for weddings & other special events. (Today we saw a younger girl in a turquoise tutu, being photographed by her mom). He also said that the house on the grounds was available to rent. I'm looking forward to another trip & more photo opps! (there are restrooms near the house) read more

I came here earlier in the month on my way to Mercer park. Never been here before so we figured "why not stop by?" It's a nice quiet garden with a few cool trails. When we were there, we saw a bunch of people doing mini photo shoots - family reunions, pregnancy, even a wedding photo shoot. The gardens are perfect for it. The facility itself is nice, even though we didn't see the inside of it. It's perfect for events and there's a nice sized gazebo to take photos too. This is probably the most beautiful park Hamilton, NJ has. Landscaping is amazing I usually always see a township crew working around the park when I visit. It has a few small hiking trails, 2 ponds and a small creek. One of the ponds is a koi pond and the other has turtles that live in it. Definitely a spot everyone in the area should see at least once if I'm going to be honest. read more

Sayen House & Gardens is a beautiful botanical garden in Hamilton. I didn't know that this existed until recently, even though I've lived just half an hour away all this time. So glad to have discovered it though, because it is such a lovely way to spend an afternoon. The park is really well maintained. There are beautiful flowers all over, bridges, trails to walk through where you can be surrounded by trees, and more. The park is bigger than it appears at first. It seems like a popular wedding venue too, as there were two weddings taking place when we visited over the weekend. read more

Beautiful little hidden hidden gem right in Hamilton Square. A great place to get some socially-distanced fresh air in a beautiful setting. There's a good reason why EVERY photographer in town uses this place for wedding/prom/family photo sessions, you can't help but to wander straight into beautiful backdrop after beautiful backdrop. Tons of well maintained walking trails that meander all throughout the property. Most of it is very well shaded, so it's even tolerable on hot days. Tons of benches and open areas make it great place for a picnic or takeout lunch location. There's also the Sayen House on property, which I presume can be rented for private events. I've never been inside, so I can't speak to that, but the landscaping surrounding it is lovely. Sayen Gardens aren't anywhere near as massive as Grounds for Sculpture a few miles away, but the $0 entry fee more than makes up for that. read more

We were looking for a scenic location to eat lunch today and saw that Sayen House & Gardens was nearby and highly rated, so we decided to check it out. I thought the gardens were beautiful, with some nice trails to wander around. Honestly, it was a little too hot for us, so we didn't get to explore everything, but I can definitely see us coming back for another lunch or dinner, especially once it's a bit cooler :) read more

Have you ever wondered if it might just be better not to review some place? This garden is such a place. I've know about it for many years, and am ashamed it took this long for me to visit. This is a little jewel of a park, with steams, fountains, and little ponds. It is landscaped immaculately, and there are several benches, gazebos, and other areas to sit and enjoy the surroundings. This is the perfect place to have a picnic, or even just enjoy some take out from a nearby restaurant. It's amazing to think this place is free. This is a major hidden treasure in the area. In the summer you see tons of blooming flowers and fish swimming in the two lakes around this area. In the fall the leaves turn and fall in beautiful patterns. I know they also rent out the little house in the middle of the garden for private events. It's beautiful! I cannot say enough about this hidden gem. Maybe it's not so hidden for people from the area, but when my mom told me about the park I had never heard of it before. I went this past weekend to scope it out for my first look for my wedding next September. I was there on Friday for that record-breaking frigid November day, and it was still unbelievably great. I will definitely be returning before our wedding in the spring/summer when it's a bit less chilly. Note: You need a permit for wedding photography. Otherwise, it's a public and free park. I will be getting married at The Hamilton Manor, and it's only a 10 minute drive. I reserved the brown gazebo, white bridge, and surrounding area (see the pictures I posted). There was another couple taking their engagement photos there when I visited, which is also a great option for couples. read more

I had my wedding here on 10/15/16. The house is great for a small wedding, and the grounds are really pretty, they make for great pictures. The price is very reasonable. Patti, my contact at the venue, was great. She answered all of my questions and was super helpful. I would give this a 5 instead of a 4 if it weren't for 2 things: Firstly, I was only allowed to use one bartender, Joe from Shoprite Liquors, and he didn't answer our phone calls asking about a quote for months. I had to go through Patti to get him to even acknowledge our question. He didn't send us a contract or drink list until a week before the event and that was after I hounded him for it. He was short with me on the phone. At first he told me it wouldn't be more than $1,000. Then he told me it would be anywhere from $400 - $800. I was so anxious not knowing a more solid estimate in advance, since my husband and I were on a tight budget. Luckily he didn't bartend that night because I was worried he'd be as short with my guests as he was with me on the phone. It all worked out though, and the prices were very reasonable. Secondly, at the end of the night, my husband's grandmother got stuck in the elevator. It stopped midway down and no one could find security. The caterers didn't know what to do, though they scrambled to find whatever keys they could to unlock the elevator. Eventually they pried the doors open and five guys grabbed her and lifted her out of the elevator. I know I just dumped a lot of negative stuff, but I still would highly recommend the venue, thus the 4 stars. Just make sure they fixed the elevator if you have any handicapped guests. I had a blast and my guests raved about how beautiful the gardens were. The house is cozy and didn't need a lot of decorations to look great. If you do book a wedding here, I recommend Mafalda's as your caterer. They were a great price and the food was amazing. read more
