For YEARS I try to get the Verizon hot spot for certain dates (ie when I need it like when I'm going on vacation) and they still can't figure out a system to allow a way to reserve any of the "library of things" (including the hotspot) for certain dates.... so I'm told to put a hold on it, then release the hold, and keep doing this machination until the time I need it and perhaps --by luck --my "turn" MAY come up possibly to coordinate with my next hold and my vacation dates. Seriously??!??. Meanwhile -- doing this is totally not fair to the others that may need it while I'm putting false holds on items in the "library of things". It's amazing all the tax dollars collected for the library on my tax bill... yet it seems the services go to the select few who have an "in" or can work the system. Those who call ON the day classes are "open" at 9:01am, or those who have no other obligations and can literally press buttons all day on their devices in hopes of reserving games, hot spots, classes, etc on dates they immediately become available. You'd think by now the library would've found a better way to serve ALL of its patrons...not the select few. And done get me started on the museum pass tickets -- I gave up trying a long time ago. Again....some fellow patrons must know how to work the system or have an "in" as I certainly don't and yet they're all taken for weekends and school holidays etc. You'd think the library would've gotten more of these knowing they constantly run out. If you're a true library user, be aware if this before you decide to live in this library area. They love to collect taxes, and do so amazingly...I'll give them that...but fall insanely short on services compared to other area libraries my friends tell me of. Such a shame.

Call me a weirdo or old fashioned or something else (no expletives) but I just love a good library…read more Growing up on Long Island in Nassau County had me frequenting one (or two) specific locations, though I had popped into other book havens within the area and always found them comforting. Though I never really had the chance to enter a Suffolk County library until I moved to Ronkonkoma and learned that my home library is the media Mecca that is Sachem. If you're at all familiar with the Best of LI awards that are divvied out each year, then you'll know that Sachem Public Library has almost exclusively won this accolade over the past decade. I honestly never cared too much about this fact because Sachem seemed so far, but now my newish abode is only 5 minutes away from this superb book spot. Even before I ever entered Sachem Library's doors I was already impressed. That's because I feared it would take some time to get a library card with my change of address and needing an updated license. Nope! Sachem allows you to register for a library card on their website and then they'll send you this little key chain library card tag to your home. I was amazed by this, and already excitedly looking forward to my first trip there. This came over the summer when they were in full swing of their reading programs, both for kids and adults. Even though the event was halfway over, I was able to easily sign up and was given a little welcome bag and a chance to win some prizes for my reading. Unfortunately, I was a little too busy this past summer to read at a speedy clip (wedding planning will do that to you), but this just added to the enjoyment of Sachem. When actually exploring the interior and what Sachem has to offer, there are tons of books, movies, video games, and programs available. I'm also massively impressed with Suffolk County's digital borrowing program over Nassau as well as what's out there to be inter-loaned from other Suffolk libraries to Sachem. My first trip there was to actually pick up a couple of movies I had ordered and came in for pickup quite quickly. That trip, the summer sign up, and my experiences since have also all resulted in friendly staff and a desire to return again and again. Overall, maybe libraries are a little outdated or they feel like something you haven't visited in years, but I promise you that Sachem Public Library has so much to offer (I forgot to mention the beautiful serene garden across the parking lot that you can walk through and read in!). It's easy to see why Sachem wins awards each year and effortlessly puts other libraries to shame (like my hometown one, sorry not sorry). So consider this library weirdo somebody who will continue to love Sachem.

The layout is visually pleasing and highly functional. Gaining computer access on the main level was simple, and the employees were polite and professional. Very nice. You do not need a library card. There are plenty of computers available. You can use the computer for one hour. If you need additional time, you can visit with the circulation desk staff. There are also a few other computers you can use for longer periods of time by request. The internet speed was fastidious and they only charge ten cents a page to print. You can even do double sided printing to minimize costs if you need to. I decided to take a look around, as the library was so different than it used to be. There are large windows letting in a great deal of light, many photocopying machines, a fax, scanner, and books galore. There are lots of quiet study areas, and plenty of tables to work at. The downstairs area is for children with many cute displays, and the upper level has a lot of desks to utilize. The restroom was clean and well stocked with hand soap, toilet paper and paper towels. Parking was ample. The lot is large with many spots. The library is very easy to see from the road, and there are clearly marked signs for parking. My only complaint was there was a man on one of the computers all the way to the left, looking at porn. No one else seemed phased by this, but children visit the library. Come on! Overall a good experience. It's nice to see how far the library has come.

So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

The general public has limited access, and this will be a short stop for most people, depending upon the exhibit. Let's be honest--most people stop by for a photo op, for the architecture and the huge column of books. I got a few great photos, got to say I've seen it, and it's cool. Worthwhile.
