Celeste, who planned our outing, was very flexible during the planning and really catered to what we wanted.

Zombie Scavengers unfortunately was not for us. At least we didn't have to pay much to play. Our…read morefriend got us a $15 Groupon deal which was good for our whole team of seven -- only $2.14 per person. I've done something like this before, Wacky Walks in downtown Atlanta: https://www.yelp.com/biz/wacky-walks-atlanta. There are numerous Zombie Scavengers locations across North America including seven here in Georgia. Here's a Yelp review for a Zombie Scavengers experience in Detroit: https://www.yelp.com/biz/zombie-scavenger-hunt-detroit. There are two in the Atlanta area: this one in Sandy Springs and another downtown. This review is for the Sandy Springs location. What is Zombie Scavengers? It's a no-budget, one-hour, smartphone-app-guided scavenger hunt. You basically pay money to perform a bunch of random and silly tasks in public. To beat the game, your team has to achieve a certain number of points before time is up. In our case, we had to score at least 4,000 points within an hour to win. Each task or "challenge" was worth 100 points though there were other things like "read mes," riddles, and trivia that were worth varying points as well. The meeting place for the Sandy Springs location is Sandy Springs Plaza, the shopping center with Trader Joes. We each installed the game app, GooseChase, on our phones. This allowed each of us to complete tasks individually if we so desired (divide and conquer). Throughout the hour, we received feedback, presumably from a human sitting on a computer or other device somewhere far away. They probably chuckled to themselves as they received our silly pictures and videos. Being silly and having fun is part of the game. I can see this as being fun for families with kids, but we were a bunch of 30-something and 40-something adults acting like zombies outside in a busy shopping center. A few examples of tasks we had to complete were having someone pretend to be a zombie in a cage (we used a Trader Joes shopping cart), someone pretend to be a zombie eating someone else's head, and someone pretend to be a zombie dog. In order to score points, we had to take pictures or videos of us completing each task and submit them using the app. Each task would then be officially scored as completed (or not) by a remote employee. We could have completed all tasks on foot, but Roswell Road is congested and dangerous. We opted to split up and hop in a couple cars to complete the scavenger hunt tasks. These included things like taking pictures of Sandy Springs city hall, a moving truck (there's a U-Haul facility nearby), a Mexican restaurant, a convenience store, and an apartment building. Each task or hunt was written with a zombie apocalypse theme in mind, to try and stick with the "Zombie Scavengers" theme. We won and our team leader got a "You Will Live!" picture sent to her. This kind of business is interesting because everything is done digitally and remotely using the GooseChase app. There is no physical storefront nor are there any specific physical game materials. The game simply utilizes what already exists in each location. Hence my "no-budget" descriptor above. Well, it does cost money to scout out locations, think up tasks and write them into an appropriate theme, develop the app, and pay live humans to guide and answer questions from a remote location. FYI, Zombie Scavengers HQ is in Summerville, South Carolina. I do think this can be fun for people who are into this kind of stuff, just not me. The app seemed to work fine and the messages we received, whether canned or not, were upbeat and positive. I can tell they do genuinely want you to have a good time. I just think my leisure time is better spent doing something else. For a group/team-based activity, I recommend tackling an escape room instead (even though it's more expensive).
