Hummingbird Candle Co. - Husbands new fave candle

The store was busy as there were three candle making events going on, but the staff was still so nice and attentive. I walked around for a little bit and decided on the pineapple, sage, and anise candle. It smelled amazing and I was like I gotta get this and I did! One of the ladies told me that she poured not only this candle, but the candle I won herself. It is so great that the staff takes such a big part in the candle making process and they are proud of it! Another thing that they are proud of is the fact that they are female, Black, and locally owned. Also, they love and support the LBGTQ+ community with not only sporting the flag, but donating proceeds of certain candles to support groups. I love this and I will bebbavk not only for this, but because of the amazing candles!! Thank you for all you do for the community Hummingbird!

I had walked around Hummingbird once when I first moved to Fayetteville and loved that it gives…read moresuch a happy feeling just being there. It is decorated with cheery colors and fun backgrounds for selfies. The scents are all lined up and sorted into categories under the classy looking cloches. I love it. When I saw that they offered classes to make a candle myself I said...sign me up! This was a class that took maybe two hours or so and was really laid back and fun. You can bring adult beverages with you, if you choose to. Also, if you bring the glass vessel back in you get a discount on your next candle! I will say that it is a little pricey, but I feel like it was well worth it. We arrived promptly and were greeted so warmly by the employees. There was another couple doing the class with us, and I feel like full attention was on all of us equally. Alex was the Chandler that oversaw our class. A chandler is a candle maker, and she told us that at the end of the class, we would be considered chandlers also. How cool is that! We learned some great information about the business itself, and how the owner has a huge focus on building a supportive and inclusive work environment. We then started learning all kinds of candle facts and getting into the nitty gritty. Everything you need is laid out for you when you arrive, so you can just get started! First, we were asked to smell ALL the scents that are set up on the long wall. They are numbered, and you go through without looking at the name of them. On a little sheet, you mark the ones you like with a circle, the ones you don't like with an X and the ones you love with a heart. I may have taken this part too seriously, as I went back and smelled some several times, while Husband picked what he wanted within minutes. Next, we picked the glass vessel that we were going to make our candles in. There are different sizes and colors to choose from. Once we knew the scents we wanted, and what we were pouring them into, we were back at our tables, and this is when the chemistry class started! We went one by one and were told the top middle and bottom notes of each of the scents that we picked. I wanted to mix two together and was told that since they were in the same scent family, that they would work well together! We picked the wick that we wanted, and something that I thought was cool is that we were given the opportunity to write a message on them that will be released as the wick burns. I am a sucker for cool details. Then we measured out just enough of the scented oil and the wax and we started mixing it together with a little whisk to get the scent mixed evenly. Then we all talked and hung out a little while we waited for Alex to clean them up and to melt them a little also and make them look all perfect. The candles were packaged up for us, and away we went! Later at home, the two we made and the two we purchased all smell amazing, and really fill the room with the scents. I will for sure return for more!

I hadn't shopped Yankee Candle Company in YEARs. I bought a gift certificate online (yes, at a…read morediscount!) to try some of their candles. I generally stick w/ Bath & Body Works candles, but since BBW's business practices have been really on my last nerve, I wanted to check out some Yankee Candle again. This location in the Cross Creek Mall is SMALL and cramped w/ merchandise. You can barely walk thru the little aisles w/o bumping someone or something. It smells great (as it should!) and the candles are arranged by "theme". Not sure what else to call it other than that. All of the Christmas "stuff" is together, then all of the beach-type, sand, sun fragrances. This place is about the size of my living room and in my short time in the store, I was asked by two different associates if I need help. Yah, for the assistance! However, I don't need help smelling the candles. A different associate then asked if she could put my items behind the counter while I was waiting in line. Uh, no. I am the next in line, but thanks. Then, a male employee stood at one register just chatting while another employee ran a register. Not sure what kept the male from actually checking someone out, but that's five employees with only one trying to expedite the line. Instead of helping me smell, please someone just start ringing people up. They do offer a 10% military discount - thanks. I wasn't overly impressed. The prices on sale are not that great and even w/ the 10%, it's about the same per ounce as BBW (yes, I calculate the cost of my candles per ounce!!!). Unless the candles I bought are REALLY awesome, I will probably be stuck back at Bath & Body Works.

It seems like with businesses like this, people only take the time to write a review when they've had a negative experience. So, I'd like to take a moment to give them my support by telling you all how smooth my experience was. I hope you have the same experience if you choose to use them. I needed some soil to fill some raised beds I had built. I stopped by on my way home from work to inquire about their products. I was happy to learn that they carried a topsoil/compost mix, which was exactly what I was looking for. Communication was a little tough due to the barriers in place because of Covid, however the lady taking my order was very patient with me. I was allowed to inspect the soil before ordering. I ended up placing an order for a 5 cubic yard delivery and they had afternoon availability for delivery the next day. The following day I received a call a little before lunch asking if I could accept the delivery early. I was home and did not mind receiving the soil in the cooler part of the day, so I told them to come on. They arrived about 20 minutes later. The gentleman that made the delivery allowed me to advise him where I would like the load dropped. He gave me time to spread out a tarp to protect my grass. He dropped those 5 cubic yards dead center on that tarp. I'll admit I was pretty impressed. He then made sure I got my money's worth by carefully cleaning off any soil that remained attached. I think he could have just dropped that soil in my beds had I asked...lol. He was very courteous, professional, and respectful of my property. The soil itself was of good quality in my opinion. It was relatively clean, with very few sticks and maybe a handful of rocks in the 2-3 cubic yards I used. There seems to be a nice mix of sand, compost, topsoil, and organic material. There was some pine bark, but less than you'd likely find in commercial potting soil. The pile itself is still generating some heat, which is a good sign that it has a good organic content. Only time will tell of the true quality by the veggies I hopefully produce. But, for my first interaction with HIllside I was very pleased. It'll soon be time to mulch the azaleas and I'll give them another opportunity to have my business.

Realized that there was a tiny window to talk to the office personnel. The lady I spoke with was not cordial at all. I inquired about the rock we needed, but they did not carry it, which was not a problem, it was the negative vibe I got from the lady I spoke to. I asked if she knew any other place that carried the rock and she said she did not. Again not a problem, it was her demeanor. First impressions are so important when conducting business. Needless to say, we will never go back to this business for any of our landscaping needs and will not recommend to family and/or friends.
