The service technicians and drivers treat people like they would wanted be treated . Everyone who works for the company is super polite and helpful. If they do not know the answer they find a coworker or manager who does and ask them to get in touch with the customer. read more

I have had multiple issues with Schagrin gas over the 8 years we have been their customer. * We have automatic propane delivery yet have woken up multiple times with no heat, stove, hot water or fireplace. year after year with no resolution. *We smelled gas in our house and called them. they came out and said it was not gas. I called our plumber who came out and almost choked on the smell and in 5 minutes told us our hot water heater valve was broken and filling our house and garage with propane. *We called after getting a mantle on our fireplace that was getting very hot to ask if there was a vent available for our unit to deflect the heat down. A part was pictured in our owners manual. after 2 calls to reach someone THEY said the tech would stop in sometime the next day to take a look. This was of course the morning we ran out of propane. I told him he would not be able to start the fireplace. He came in anyway, looked at the cold fireplace and left. I have just now, 2 months later, received a bill for a service call. The mantle still gets hot. *The technicians are friendly but not all are knowledgeable, especially when they don't know what gas smells like. *If you want dependable service and fair treatment, keep looking! read more

I supposedly inherited this company when I purchased my new property, last Friday one of their representatives entered my backyard where my little girl was playing on announced scaring her to death. She ran and got me. I approached a man and said please knock on the door if you have any business here, I was uncertain whether or not because he stated that this company owned it, but I was told otherwise at settlement. I told him he could check the tank and leave five days later entered my property again unannounced was extremely belligerent and said that they have the right of passage anytime ,so I informed him that I was calling the police ,the man stated that I could call the police all I want. They were protected by Delaware state police anyone who wants proof I have video of the man's words avoid this company at all cost. They are absolutely horrible on the propane side. There prices are close to double competitors. They jack up prices even if you are under contract. There customer service is lacking at best. If you are buying a house and they use Shagrin have the tank removed before you move in. There is a face book group documenting the horrible service they provide. There competition is hesitant to take over accounts with underground tanks because Shagrin tries to slow the transition process as much as possible. I will say that there service techs are friendly and helpful. My only positive for and over priced rude company. read more

I moved into a new house in the end of December. I was told that the builder used 8 gallons of the tank. Then I got a call that on Jan 10 that I owed $747.29. Clearly I didn't use that much gas in 12 days. Never received a bill and still not clear what it was for given I just moved in! Then 5 days later I had no heat, no hot water, no stove top because the tank was empty!!!! So they sent out a truck to fill the tank for a bill of over $1000! So hmmm??? One might wonder whose tank they filled cause clearly it wasn't mine! I was told by one person that you pay for what you use - so you get billed when they come out to fill the tank and that I shouldn't have been billed. read more

While Schagrin may be very accommodating in providing service for propane, BEWARE that they are like vipers when it comes to discontinuing service or simply moving from your home. I am selling my house and have had repeated threatening emails from the company explaining all of the financial pain and inconvenience I will experience if I am unable to make sure the buyer of the property continues their service. It feels like I am under contract with the mob and they might break my legs if I don't get the next owner to use them. Strongly recommend against going into "business" with this provider of propane. It all began over a dispute when they forced me to sign a long term contract for existing service and tank located at a house I purchased. From there it was all downhill. From refusing to offer price cap plan like most other gas companies do to showing their arrogance when they refused to establish another service in my detached garage because they "disliked" my choice of heating equipment. But worse of all was there insensitivity to not bring to my attention a known problem with gas furnace they installed. I was fortunate to not experienced any CO leaks despite manufacturer requiring heat exchanger to be pressure tested annually. Don't trust this company as far as you can see them. This is the worst utility company I have ever dealt with. Be aware that this company will run a credit check and even if you have excellent credit they will still charge you $350 security deposit. Which I was told by them that will not be refunded for 5 years ! They will also charge you admin fees each month. Sometimes $10 sometimes $40. If you have not used any gas you will still be charged. And they will threaten to turn your gas off when you owe $30 even though they have $350 of your money. Even after my pipes burst and my condo was uninhabited for several months they claimed I used gas. My HVAC was flooded and not turned on and I was not there for months. So be aware of your gas readings. This company is a complete rip off read more

Not very happy with their service and would not recommend them. I contracted with them for propane service and deal with the Middletown, DE office. In addition to their high prices, they have a 5 business day window for delivery from the time your order is placed. Today is the 6th business day and no propane. I called the Middletown office and the order was not placed. I requested confirmation of payment and it was not sent either. Keep in mind I paid them for fuel 6 days ago. The representative told me today that she could not guarantee delivery today and couldn't tell me when delivery would be made. This is horrible service and not my first time having delivery issues with them. I will be looking for another service company when my contract is up. Fran C. read more

I've been a customer of Schagrin Gas since 1994, when I purchased my house. Was told in the beginning that I owned the tank. I had a delivery of propane in April by Schagrin at $5.17/gal. So, I recently did some shopping around and found another company charging $2.99/gal. This is NOT an introductory price. I called Schagrin to discontinue service. This is when I found out I did not own the tank and the fee to remove it would be $190. This is their tank! Why am I PAYING THEM to take their tank. I told them I am a senior citizen on a fixed income and can't possibly pay this. The rep said the $190 will be deducted from the credit for the gas in the tank. I told her I was hoping to use the whole credit for purchasing gas from the new company. This fee is ridiculous and Schagrin was not willing to work with me! God awful pricing, period!!!! I called six other propane companies today and everyone of them were at least $1.20 to $1.50 cheaper. They claim their pricing is this way because the propane is better, horsesh$t!!!!. My neighbor works on a oil rig and says that's all a joke. I will be leaving this company in the spring time because no normal working family can pay $3.79 a Gallon on300/500 tanks ,when everyone else is at $2.40 or lower. We needed a new AC unit. We met with three different companies. Schagrin was very informative, fair priced, and most of all not pushy in any way. Everyone from the sales person to the installers were extremely polite, professional, and informative. Both work areas were cleaner at the end then when they started and they were in and out in one day after having to install the outdoor unit and reconstruct the indoor duct work in the furnace area. My wife and I recently had SchagrinGAS Heating & Air install a Lennox Humidifier and a Lennox PureAir purification system along with a new smart thermostat into our home and we couldn't be happier! The installers arrived on time and were extremely polite. They cleaned up after themselves and were very helpful with explaining the new equipment and how to operate everything. We can already notice a huge difference in comfort from the humidifier on the very first day! (This winter has been brutal in our home with the dry air, damaged skin, coughing, etc.) Schagrin's prices were much lower than the other Lennox dealers in the area that we spoke to and we would recommend SchagrinGAS Heating & Air to all of our friends and neighbors! read more

Horrible company horrible business policies. My wife and four kids moved into my new house on a Friday. The following Monday they sent someone threatening to shut my gas off if I didn't sign the contract for their propane service saying they've been trying to contact me. If that wasn't bad enough I had to buy a new tank and had to schedule it with them and my new provider to remove their tank from the 90s that the removal company said would get scrapped, Schagrin came out and stole the 500 gallons of propane left in my old tank days before the switch while I was at work. I grew up in Middletown and would have gladly used them if their business practices were ethical. I will never forget the way they treated my family and let everyone from Middletown to Pennsylvania know what a terrible business this company runs. Do not use this company. They are cheats! We purchased a house and at settlement the gas in the tank was transferred to our name. The tank is leased and we told them we will pay the lease on the tank until we get a new tank from our new gas company (one that has good reviews and gas is cheaper). They will not do this unless we sign a contract with them. Since we will not sign the contract they are threatening us, saying that they are going to lock the tank - so we can't get our gas - in the middle of winter. I think this is called BLACKMAIL! I have no idea why there are so many negative comments about Schagrin Gas here, but I just did a major, $7,000 project with them, and they were FANTASTIC. Schagrin Gas was prompt in returning phone calls and in coming over to my home. They sent Mike Schallcross over, and he was extraordinarily helpful right from the start. Mike took the time to explain to me why a replacement furnace would be better than a conversion. He explained that the part most likely to fail in my 20 year old furnace was the heat exchanger. If I merely converted the furnace to work with natural gas, the heat exchanger would most likely fail in the next few years. When I asked how I would know if the heat exchanger was failing, Mike offered that I would probably wake up one winter morning and find that the furnace was simply not working. At all. The difference between a planned and unplanned furnace replacement, is that an unplanned furnace replacement is a serious emergency, with house temperatures getting dangerously low, pipes freezing and bursting, etc. Rather than take chances with my 20-year-old furnace, it was time to replace it. Mike from Schagrin Gas provided a detailed and thorough project estimate, covering several different options, and he did so within 24 hours of his visit to my home. I liked the way Mike Shallcross explained things. His prices were good. He was responsive to all my phone calls, emails and questions. And my neighbor down the street was impressed too. So I went with Schagrin Gas for the project. Mike also pointed me toward a higher efficiency two stage furnace, which would save me even more money, as it gingerly sipped on the natural gas fuel, instead of guzzling it like some other furnaces do. I signed the contract with Schagrin. We had only one project delay, caused by the county. Schagrin upgraded the pipes in my basement and a few weeks later, came back on a bitter, cold and windy day to do the final installation. Everything went smoothly, and the old furnace and hot water heater came out, as the new appliances went in. I want to give a special shout out to Gianni and Steve, the two men who actually did the installation of my new furnace and hot water heater that day. It's worth mentioning that when Gianni and Steve left my home, the basement where they had done the work was cleaner and better than when they started the project. They did not leave any mess - and were immaculate in their work. There was one other wrinkle worth mentioning. Toward the end of the day, just before the project was done, we learned that Delmarva had made a mistake, and failed to add my home to their list for gas hookups that day. Of course, this meant the house would not have heat at all if this were not resolved. I received a phone call from Adam, one of the project supervisors, he advised me on the situation, but he had a contact at Delmarva in the gas engineering department. Adam assured me that the matter would be promptly resolved, and it was. 20 minutes after his first call to me informing me of the issue, Adam called back to let me know that Delmarva would be to my home in 10 minutes. Sure enough, 10 minutes later, the Delmarva truck rolled up. Their man came downstairs, inspected the tags on the pipes to verify that the county had inspected and approved the work, and then he installed the gas meter and turned on the gas. The new furnace fired to life, and my home had natural gas heat for the first time, and natural gas hot water too. The entire experience with Schagrin Gas was a positive one. Every person involved in the project was courteous and professional, and I would not hesitate to work with Schagrin Gas again in the future. When I am ready to replace my aging A/C system, I will be giving Schagin Gas a call to have them handle that project. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

They work with the developers to get all the houses stuck on a contract and then give you no way out so you are stuck with overpaying. Use caution before signing a contract with this propane company! My husband and I were new to the propane world when we purchased our home and we were told we owned the tank...After receiving and signing a contract (one which we thought we needed just to receive a fill from Schagrin) we were terribly mistaken. Once we realized that they were charging almost $3.00 a gallon (my neighbors pay $1.99) we tried to get out. Unfortunately, we had to learn our lesson the hard way. We now have to PAY THEM ($500-$1,000) to dig up our tank, and get this, if they damage any of my property, they are not responsible. What! How on earth can you trust someone to come onto your property, most likely irritated that they are loosing your service, and not damage anything? Purchasing the tank from them is also not an option. So they have thought of every way to screw their customers. Talk about terrible customer service. Long story short...To new customers, please please read your contract and if you can go with another company! As everyone has stated, they are WAY OVERPRICED. I just paid $3.12 a gallon, but since I paid early it was only $2.92. My husband and I have already started saving to have Schagrin remove their tank and purchase our own. read more

I moved into a home and schagrin was the provider and tank owner. I was essentially harassed to sign their contract or yank went the tanks. This will all while i'm in the middle of moving. Due to thinking they weren't too bad I signed and moved on to moving in. I had read the contract and it didn't say cancelling would cost me anything so I didn't care. After about 2 weeks I was checking the tank and found it was over 20 years old and had no meter gauge to see how much was left. I inquired that to my rep and what my price per gallon was for Propane. I was shocked to hear it was going to be $3.98 per gallon. As soon as I heard that I shopped around. Within a week I had a provider for a cost of $2.09 per gallon. I tried to stick with schagrin and have them lower my price but there was "nothing they could do". I find that to be a laugh. If a new company can setup a new tank for free and sell it at almost half the price how could schagrin do nothing. Just greed. Look everyone this company probably use to be great. But they are money hungry and work to trick people into locking down with them for 5 years. They are trying to charge me a 140 tank pickup fee . Which by the way is never stated or mentioned in the contract. To add to this the tank is ancient and rusting out. The new company said they don't even make or use the style tank I had anymore. I only had them for three weeks while the house has been mine and they just didn't try to keep me. How they think they entitled to charge me to get the tanks they were going to take for free is a laugh. read more

Unbelievably horrendous! My ancient/dying friend bought a house in November 2015 which was locked into Schagrin by virtue of THEIR OWNED TANK buried in her new yard. She preferred not to freeze to death so under extreme duress she had to sign a contract to receive propane. Schagrin required personal references to extend credit and refused to auto fill with her personal visa. Although Schagrin charged crazy money, she was willing to pay for service. The thought of watching the "in ground gauge" until it reached Schagrin's required level of depletion and hoping to not run out simply terrified her. Schagrin viciously insisted that her contract was 5 years PERIOD. She had Allied deliver above ground tanks then Cochran Propane offered to remove & replace Schagrin's tank at no charge. Auto delivery is no problem. Cost is half! Ancient customer died in her heated home. SCHAGRIN BLEW OFF AN EXCELLENT CUSTOMER WITH THEIR VERY HEARTBREAKING ATTITUDE! read more

My husband and I purchased a home in October, 2008 that had a SchagrinGas propane tank installed. As opposed to having the tank dug up and a new one installed, we continued gas service with Schagrin. A couple of years ago, our heater died and Schagrin installed a new HVAC system. Shortly after the installation, on a weekend morning the outside unit began to make a very loud screeching, grinding sound. Within a minute of that, there was a huge popping sound and all of the power in the house shut down. This was obviously a major concern, as we both viewed this as a potential fire hazard. Our HVAC system was new and under warranty, so we called Schagrin for a service visit. The technician who looked at the system told us he could not find anything wrong with it and that "the issue was probably caused by a bug." Ridiculous, right? So now Schagrin has been sending us invoices for $89 for this service call and told us there is nothing wrong with the system and if we do not pay it, they are going to lock our tank so we won't have heat. Yesterday, Jillian Levinson-Shields, VP for Schagrin involved herself in the matter and her conduct literally qualifies the company for the worst customer service award of the century! She has not been to my home, nor did she witness the outside system performing in the manner I described, but made it a point to say, "If something that catastrophic happened to the system there would be some sort of evidence proving that." So, it sounds to me as though she is saying my husband and I are making this story up. Well, it did happen. And it did cause our power to shut down. And it does make me concerned that it will happen again and cause a fire and burn our house down. We have paid thousands of dollars in gas costs to Schagrin, and over $10,000 for a new HVAC system....and they are threatening not only to lock our tank but also to take legal action against us for $89? It is absolutely horrid that a company would treat one of its customers in this way. I would NEVER recommend this company to a new customer. Their level of service has declined significantly since we first became customers in 2008, and I will NEVER use their services again. read more

Horrible. Upon start up of services they require a 300 dollar deposit which they basically keep forever. Most utility companies will start to deduct from it after you are an established customer...typically a year or so . Not these thieves. Additionally, their hot water heaters and HVAC systems are inferior and their technicians are not up to par. THey thumb their noses at the consumer because they know they are the only game in town and do not care. They are horrible. I wish i could give them zero stars. Signed a contract with Schagrin 12 years ago with the understanding from the sales rep that we would own the tank after 5 years and could go anywhere else to get propane once we owned it. Knowing that we would pay more for the propane we thought it was worth it so they would bury the tank and we would be basically paying for that service as we went due to the higher propane cost. We fell into the convenience of budget billing and just kept going with Schagrin. Fast forward to present day. We are selling our home to the current tenant and Schagrin is now saying we do not own the tanks and we will have to pay them to remove their equipment. My tenant is willing to purchase the tanks but Schagrin is not willing to sell their tanks the only option is to pay them to remove it! This company mislead us into signing the contract. I am currently in contact to see if they are willing to make this wrongful sales tactic right. Frank is apparently a new manager so hopefully he can get this company a new reputation. I recently had a gas heater (converted from Oil) central air and new hot water tank installed by Schagrin Gas - experience was wonderful. The installers we terrific - friendly, on time, and helpful. They worked with me on pricing and I wanted an AO Smith hot water tank and they usually install Bradford White and worked with me to get what I wanted. They were on time, very nice, did a few extras for me and cleaned up when finished. I could not have asked for a better experience. I also called about 8 others over the course of one year - worth the $$$. Cheers! read more

Similar to others ... so I will quote and paraphrase ... but basically stay clear of this company... Schagrin is billing me for the removal of gas tank on a property that I have no longer own. Likewise, I did not request the removal of said tank. It was removed at the request of the new owners. The position of Schargin (on a contract signed 27 years ago!) is that they have a contract that states if the contract was terminated by us or the company then we would be responsible for the removed/return of the equipment owned by Schagrin and located on said property. My position, other than it is ridiculous to think that a prior owner is responsible for the actions of of the new owner, is that we were loyal customers for 27 years but they just do not care at all!!! Desired Settlement: that this review keeps a few customers away so that the net result of their greedy attitude is that they lose business. read more
