An amalgamation of Dick's Sporting Goods, Bass Pro, and Great Wolf Lodge given birth to a love-child named Scheels. It's totally one part corporate, crisp, functional retail goods store, and another part taxidermy animals, rides, fudge, and hunting & fishing gear like you'd find at Bass Pro. We took our kids here on a winter break, gray day and it was a lot of fun. First off, there's a mini aquarium when you walk in -- it's nothing to write home about, but it gets the kids attention and they realize right away this is a fun store. From there, you can't miss the gigantic ferris wheel in the middle of the store. Gonna be real, it's fun and worth the wait but also a bit nerve wracking. Something is just odd about quietly swaying at the top of a department store quietly for such a long time. My daughter was like, "Dad, I'm scared to look down!" and all I could think was, "so am I, kid, so am I." We both agreed it's pretty fun once it gets going. There's also a little bowling area where you get five frames for a buck, and ditto to a little arcade game area as well. There's toy stores, outdoor goods, quality brands of clothes and outfitting, and really a nice answer to online shopping. In fact, it feels like malls used to feel in the 90's but a modern spin on everything. We did eat here but I'd say skip it. I didn't find anything I wanted and when I went to finish off my kids chicken tenders I was super underwhelmed and ended up pitching them. I will say at this time they carry Sylas & Maddy's ice cream (best IC in the city IMO) so that was a nice surprise treat. What more could you want if out shopping with the kids?! I shop here when I need something specific for hiking or other outdoor activities. I stopped by most recently for new hiking shoes. Scheels has a very large selection of hiking boots and shoes. The staff was great about pulling the sizes I needed and checking in periodically. I tried several styles and sizes and left with a new pair of Merrells. So I wanted some water shoes and Bass Pro in Independence said they had some on their website. No, they didn't. Called several other stores like Shoe Carnival, Dicks Sporting Goods and Duluth. Many close to home but none had what I needed. Called Scheels and yes I had to drive out of my way but they had a huge selection! Thank you for carrying summer items during all the seasons. The store was packed but the employees were doing as best they could to keep up as the parking lot was full. You had your wait for one to leave to get one. Prices looked decent on things I was checking out. Next time I need something for outdoor activities, I'll go here first just to save time and agony. Thanks Scheels. read more

Great service and excellent selection!. I always have so many problems trying to get On Running shoes. It's always sold out or no sizes ...but Scheel's had a vast selection of Clouds from On Running. The prices are amazing. From $100 to $170 dollars cheaper than Australia. Even with the exchange rate it's super. The Aquarium indoors and the Ferris wheel left my nephew overjoyed. Heck, if I was based in Kansas, would work or buy shares in Scheel's. Customer service was good. read more

Honestly, I've always heard so much about this place, but have never stepped foot inside. Finally did and I was in awe! Scheel's was able to keep my high energy 2 year old happy and entertained for several hours. They have a free toddler play place, a Cafe with juice and cookies, fishies, and even a 2 lane bowling alley. All of the employees were friendly, even when we dropped many many cookie crumbs on their floor. We plan on spending many of the Winter months at Scheels! read more

Customer service here is absolutely amazing. I came here for some back to school clothes and was met with helpful employees all throughout the store. Kieron helped us in the shoe section and was super honest and got us sizes we needed. When I went to the changing room, the people working there were friendly and made the environment more calm and relaxed. The selection here is very big. They have so many options for anything you could be looking for. The prices are also very reasonable for what they have. They even have lots of areas with stuff on sale or discount. Armann checked us out and was pretty slow but it was towards the end of the day so he was probably just tired. Overall a great experience and would come back again. read more

Big fan of Scheels... until now. There's a huge sign when you walk in that requires masks inside. Yet, there is no enforcement and the store was packed, and peppered with adults without masks. I haven't seen an un-masked person anywhere in 6 months or more! While maybe unofficially, there were probably about 15 people waiting in the heated entrance before you walk in, all without masks. So, to walk in, you had to walk through filth. There were tons of staff on hand, and nothing was done. I'll be boycotting Scheels moving forward. I quickly left after realizing it was a COVID nightmare inside. read more

This is a sportsman's paradise! You can spend hours in the spot and still not take it all in. If you have kiddos needing to get out and stretch legs or just meander in between games this is your stop! It is pricy but the experience of this mega sporting good store is worth the stop! So many brands and items that I never knew about. The Ferris wheel and aquarium are a kiddos dream. The sport gear, water gear, hunting gear, clothing, and home accessories are fun to look through as well. When we come we get the shoe spray.... Crazy I know..... BUT..... it really works. We had a car full of soccer girls and needed a little break in between games. We came here and the girls enjoyed walking around. I took my grandkids there to do some school shopping at checkout I was told I could get a $95 credit if I applied for a Scheels credit card. The cashier took me to the counter by the Ferris wheel to apply. the application info was entered and showed as pending because it has been a long time since I applied for a credit card. I was told that I could only get a $25 credit then, but when my new card arrived I could call the store and get the remaining $70 refund put on the card I had to use to pay for the school clothes. I called this morning with new Scheels credit card info, receipt etc. and was told I have to go to the store to get the refund. I live 40 min. from that store. I specifically asked them if I had to come back to the store and was told no, it could be done over the phone. I believe this was all a scam to get my info and apply for their credit card. read more

Wow, just wow. This place is huge - so huge it even has a sea plane and Ferris wheel in it. All your sports are represented here. Outdoors gear, archery, shooting sports, soccer, basketball, football and much much more. The diner inside is great too. The fudge is outstanding! The staff are exceptionally customer service oriented. The mens shoe manager (Darius), even remembered my sons shoe size from our trip months earlier. You know those people who are agonizing to buy presents for because they seem to have everything? That's my youngest brother. A coworker recommended that I get him a Scheels gift card because my brother loves to hunt and fish. Fast forward a few months - I ended up hanging out with my brother & daughter at Scheels for a few hours. There was nothing I disliked about this place BUT let me tell you what I really LOVED. 1) As my brother was looking at a particularly fantastic piece of camo layering I noticed that the shirt's material was extremely unique. I was asking my brother what he thought it was when a clerk replied that it was fine merino wool. (It was nearly as thin as my silk layering pieces.) The fact that he knew and was so proactively helpful knocked my socks off! 2) We has a bite in the diner. The food was fantastic and it was super clean but the absolute best part was the service! They were INCREDIBLE and made several rounds to our table to check on us even though it's not the type of place where I would expect to be waited on. The food was so good that my brother bought a big box of fudge. I had a few bites and it was delectable! 3) Everything in the store was impeccably clean. This is really not something I ever expect when I am out in public as it's just hard for staff to keep up sometimes but I cannot recall seeing anything out of place or even a smudge on any glass! read more

This is a review that should have been written a long time ago. Where can you find a single store that offers something for the family, parents and everyone's hobbies all in one place. This place has a huge indoor ferris wheel inside the store. As you walk in you will be hit with a large aquarium we had the opportunity to watch a diver inside greeting us as she was doing tricks and probably cleaning up or doing what she needs to inside the water. There is gelato and fudge sold at the cafe store on the first floor. You can walk around the 1st or 2nd floors and find clothes, shoes, guns, ammo, hunting & fishing stuff, and more spread out around the store. Upstairs there was a game shooting spot and a lot of stuffed real animals and Abraham Lincoln teaching you history. Many photo ops and spots throughout, whether it's catching a fish, being inside jaws, or a bear. Everyone should come here at a minimum once to check it out. Terrible service at the gun counter. I've never had a problem buying a gun till I went to scheels. FYI they will have you pay for the gun then hold for upto 30 days where anyone else only does 5-6 days. That doesn't seem right to me. They got a response but fumbled the call and didn't hear the proceed or deny response from the ncis then wanted me to fill the form out again for the same gun. I'll never buy anything from them again. They treated me like a criminal instead of a customer. read more

Can't say enough good things about the staff here! Every interaction I have ever had at this store has been above and beyond, but today takes the cake! My kiddo was in their newly renovated play area and fell and hurt his arm, scheels employees came over to comfort him, give him ice for his elbow, and even stayed until he stopped crying. Love the store and selection. Employees were helpful. No attempt made to enforce their mask policy. There are at least 20% of the customers walking around with an odd smile on their face seemingly proud that they are not wearing a mask. I understand that the pandemic and customer conflicts (who refuse to wear a mask) put the employees in an odd position, but will shop here as a secondary source for what I need in the middle of a pandemic. I would also comment that I noticed several employees wearing a mask below their nose. Effectively they were not wearing a mask (employee education issue versus personal opinion?) I would otherwise give the store near a five star rating, but the above concern likely represents the administrative support/employee support of trying to improve public safety. read more

I really wish I could say better things about Scheels.we dont get here often, it's a 30-plus minute drive for us.and we dont come to ride the Ferris wheel or marvel at the awesome fish tanks.we come to buy stuff. We don't mind paying for good quality items. What I DO mind is milling about in the shoe section for ten or more minutes, clearly needing assistance, only to see the teen and twenty something staffers clearly more interested in giggling and flirting with each other, rather than offering assistance and doing their job. Customer service was friendly (for the most part). Was very disappointed with the tent selection. Massive store, 7 tents... total, all basic Coleman tents that you can get cheaper at Walmart. The firearm attendant was the real low point. I'm very well versed in firearms and will often ask a few questions I already know the answers to to weigh if my real questions will be answered with knowledge or wind. Not only was the attendant spreading misinformation but also gave off an arrogant vibe that was very off-putting. Honesty would never purchase a firearm from you. Scheel's is such a great store! They have such a wide variety of merchandise, the store is always a clean, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. On this visit we were interested in looking at some sunglasses and the gentleman that assisted us was awesome. He knew all about the different brands, styles, and types glass used in each. While we weren't ready to purchase he did inform us that they price match other stores if we were to bring in a picture of the item with that stores price which is pretty cool! If you've never been it's definitely worth it just to stop in and take it all in. They have a massive fish tank which just past the registers when you walk in, and then past there they have a giant Ferris wheel! read more

I also saw a few staff members not wearing masks having close conversations with customers also not wearing masks. My son worked at the Overland Park location the last 8 months as a cashier. One of the best salesman of the Scheels credit card and very mindful of secret shoppers and delivering for the company. He is a straight A student and set to graduate early from high school. He has finished a full years worth of college credit at JCCC. On Wednesday David was called to the office for what best can be described as an interrogation. He was first asked if he could define stealing. Informed that a loss and prevention case had been in the works since December. Asked if he stole cloths or other items from the store. Pressed further my son admitted to getting a fountain drink without paying. Following the lead and guidance from others was obviously a poor choice by him. The course of action from the leadership at Scheels Overland Park? They chose to intimidate, humiliate and coerce him into writing the attached letter. Once complete he was given the option to write a second letter of resignation or be fired. This option afforded to him because they thought highly of his work. As a parent of this young man I find this treatment in poor judgement. If you want to terminate him for fountain drinks then do it but what is the point of this degrading letter. Why are two grown men bullying a 16 year old kid and forcing him to grovel in a letter knowing you intend to separate. Completely unprofessional. I will make it to Scheels to purchase 3 fountain drinks in order to save this loss to this company. I believe the overall loss is much greater when you choose to treat employees like this. read more

Really massive sporting goods store with such flair for novel displays. We were fascinated by the animal displays- super educational and we oohed and aahed at the animals, aquarium and Ferris wheel. The selection of goods is impressive too! Such a great store and we could easily spend lots of time and money. They offer a huge and unique selection of pet goods (dried buffalo lungs, hunting accessories) toys, and all kinds of sporting goods.
