Awesome team environment and caring instructors who invest in their students. On top of that, they have a very strong ladies program

Moved here from California just over a year ago and was looking for an academy to keep my training…read moregoing. I read reviews of many in the area, Spangler BJJ was very close to my place and reviews were great so I went to check it out. I walked in and was really impressed with the welcome I received, how comfortable it felt and how clean the academy was. Those 3 things are very important to me. I am very glad I walked in those doors that day. Professor Spangler is very detailed and extremely patient. He has opened my eyes and mind so much. He has shown me that there is so much more than self defense BJJ. I am a bigger guy so learning things like spider guard and being comfortable with it is a huge for me. Professor Spangler goes out of his way to help tune a technique so that it suits either your body type or your flexibility limitations. Top notch. The class format is wonderful and class length is perfect. Just the right amount of technique drilling and rolling. Professor Spangler is a huge part in what makes this place wonderful but he is not it. The folks I train with are just amazing. Everyone has been wonderful from day one, I just can't thank them enough for the support in helping my Jiu-Jitsu game. Thank you everyone. Anyone looking to start training or looking for a new academy, walk in the doors of Spangler Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you will be very glad you did.

Coach Spangler has been there for the children and adult for support, advice and coaching in tournaments. Classes are spread out in the day for adult before or after work; especially the afternoon class that's at the same time as the kids class so parents can take a class too. We couldn't ask for a better place for us to learn Jiu Jitsu. If you are ever interested, don't hesitate to stop by and ask for a trial; even if you question if this is the right fit for you or your child.

Off the bat, I came here specifically for Muay Thai, so can't comment on the others…read more So, I'm kind of having a hard time with this review. They are super, super nice people... but it's just not quite there. I've been to a bunch of better and worse Muay Thai gyms, and this place falls somewhere in the bottom. 1. Quality. This is really the biggest issue; nobody there is really qualified to teach Muay Thai. One of the trainers is a (lovely!) kid of 17 or 18 who just does not have enough experience, and the other is an older man who just has no muay thai skills. I never did see any of the trainers listed on their website teach anything. I know this is the East Coast and not the most metropolitan area, but even basics are not really there. There are no drills and pretty much no technical work. Lots of long combinations that don't always make sense, and not strenuous enough to count as a workout. Even worse, what's going on is frequently quite unsafe. There is a lot of training without proper gear (shin guards, hand wraps etc) and way too much hard sparing for people's level of ability. We all get it, it's martial arts, but what it should not be is people walking out of there with bruises everywhere because they've been whaling on each other or doing kicks without pads. 2. Rates. These are pretty high for what you get, and come with a 2x a week maximum. Once you're there you can take more than one class, but it still sucks that you basically have to pack all workouts into two days rather than being able to come when you want to. So you basically need another gym to work out at. 3. Scheduling and space. The classes are all at 6 and 7pm, which, for someone who works, is just really tough. Which means that unless you're actively in a class, as above, you need another gym. 4. Facilities. This might be a personal gripe, but it stops it from being a 'real' gym in my eyes - there are no showers. This means that there is no way to go work out, and then do anything else outside of go home and shower. Also... this is picky, but their heavy bags are not filled correctly and thus provide very little resistance and are too soft, and I remember someone saying about one of the bags that it had 'something hard inside' which, again, is quite unsafe, and kind of makes me wonder if they even know what it's filled with...? So... in summary. I can't really recommend it. It just doesn't feel like a safe space that's conducive to either learning or working out.

We heard about this studio from our local high school wrestling coach who has a 2nd degree BJJ black belt. I was looking for high-quality instruction, a great community, and convenient class times, and G13 exceeded my expectations in all three areas. Professor Roberto Godoi, the founder, has an incredible amount of knowledge and is a fantastic teacher. All teachers at the school are some of the best I've ever encountered. The lessons are structured and easy to digest, and the community is welcoming and supportive. There are classes in the evenings and early mornings to accommodate busy schedules. The school is also welcoming to women and features a safe and clean environment. Overall, I highly recommend G13 for anyone looking for a top-notch Jiu Jitsu school in Raleigh.
