Schmidt's Sausage Shop has been doing this since 1961, and let me tell you--they've mastered the art of sausage. We stopped in for lunch and went straight for their grilled footlong hot dog with fresh-cut fries, plus a pack of snack sticks from the butcher shop. Calling it a "hot dog" doesn't do it justice--this thing is a perfectly spiced, seasoned sausage, and it's enormous. It comes tucked into a super soft, fluffy roll, and we topped ours with Schmidt's homemade sauerkraut and mustard. Watching (and smelling) it sizzle on the flat-top grill right in front of us made the whole experience even better. The fresh-cut fries were spot on--especially with plenty of malt vinegar available (thank you, Schmidt's!). The whole meal could easily satisfy two hungry adults. Beyond lunch, Schmidt's has so much to offer--Wednesday Night Dinners with homestyle favorites, Friday & Saturday lunch specials (like their signature footlong sausage sandwich, brisket, smash burgers, and more), and of course their incredible butcher shop with sausages, bacon, sauerkraut, and seasonal treats. PRO TIP: Don't just wander in and hope for the best. Schmidt's keeps things interesting with their Wednesday Night Dinners and Friday & Saturday Lunch Specials, but the only way to know what's cooking is to stalk their Facebook page... unless you like living dangerously and showing up to be surprised. Either way, you're winning! This isn't just a place to stop if you're nearby--it's a weekend lunchtime destination worth planning around. Coming to Schmidt's is always a treat. Maybe that's because I've lived so far away from it for so long. My family lives nearby and now that we're within an hours drive we get to shop here more. The sausage here is DELICIOUS. In recently purchased several sealed packs of Holiday Blend while they are available as well as sauerkraut, some stuffed cabbages rolls and some sweet sausage. I happened to stop by the day after Thanksgiving which is the only time I've been there that I was the only customer in the store. This place gets very busy most days but the lines move quickly. I was waited on promptly. I may add that the store is clean. They also sell bacon and a variety of dried sausages and snack sticks. All food items are made there except for so local baked goods they carry for sale. read more

My family has been going to Schmidt's for three generations. Soon it will be four. The hot smoked sausage is our favorite. My son loves their bacon and their extra hot smoked sausage. Their quality has been constant for over sixty years. I prefer the long links, but the bubble packs are perfect for gifts and nice to have in the freezer. My daughter recently made a pot of sausage and sauerkraut in her Brooklyn apartment. Her roommate and boyfriend loved the smell, but being Californians they never had anything like that and they questioned whether they would eat it. Well, they both said it was the best they ever had. There were no leftovers. When I take a crock pot filled with sauerkraut and sausage to holiday events, picnics, or social pot lucks it is always the first thing consumed by the guests. Amazingly good sausage. Only cash and check. They do have an ATM. I've never tried anything bad. I recently bought 6 of their uncooked mild smoked sausage. It was about $9 for the package. I also picked up one of the dried smoked pork sausage links. It was about $4.50 for about 10-12 inches and I took it back to work where I ate the whole thing for lunch. On Fridays, they have a $5 lunch special for a 12-inch sausage sandwich. I've never been able to make it there, but it's on my list of things to try. Staff is good and they get you in and out as quickly as possible. I was stuck behind two women who were slow to make decisions, and another guy caught my eye - getting me what I wanted and out the door in about 3 minutes - including the sample of the dried sausage. 3.5 stars. 5 stars for customer service. They literally let us try everything in the shop. I bought a bunch of meat sticks and sliced sausages. If memory serves me correctly, they are cash only. This is a matter of personal preference, but I thought the cured meats were a little "sweet" for my palate. That's just me though. The other helpers seem to differ. read more

I drove there today to get the brisket sandwiches that was advertised on their website. Lo and behold, they were serving fried chicken sandwich! Who goes to a smokehouse for fried chicken? That could be bought at any fast food restaurant or pizza shop. I am extremely upset with this experience as the whole family was expecting Brisket sandwiches for lunch. Normally they would get 5 stars for their smoked meats, but getting up early just to drive there for nothing is very upsetting! read more

VISITED this shop twice based on a local acquaintance & posted reviews! Hard to believe the reviews considering the disaster we encountered or maybe others do not pay attention as we do? WHAT A MISTAKE! The people messed up 2 very simple orders, the 2nd order was so nasty it was inedible! GROSS & Improper food handling etiquette due to issues viewed! Handling raw meat without proper hand washing before handling consumables! "Think good ole boy attitudes!" The older guy (other than the owner) acted quite strange gave off weird vibe causing less than friendly service & presentation! It appears the "locals lack of etiquette, common logic & really laid back attitudes in general will probably keep the place going! (including the PA GROSS so called 60 second Rule: Look it up!)" This is by far the best butcher shop around. There isn't anything I don't like. In my recent visit I stopped in for the $5 foot long sausage sandwich. (Friday only) You can get it with mustard, onions, and their homemade sauerkraut. I wasn't going to be eating it right away so I got it plain. I also got some smoked sausage to make Haluski and bacon. Once you try their bacon you will never want store bought bacon again. Tucked away on a side street in Steelton is a special sausage shop that makes some of the best smoked sausage I have ever tasted. I tried the honey smoked sausage over the July 4th weekend at a friends pool party. A lot of the people at the party grew up in Steelton and were familiar with Schmidt's. Those of us that were trying it for the first time, took careful notes on how to find the shop. My friend had a few varieties to try, the honey, mild and an extra hot that I did not try. The fresh taste and superior quality of the meat really comes through. They are lightly smoked with just enough spice and garlic to not overwhelm the flavor. I like them lightly grilled, the natural casing has that "snap" that adds to the over all texture and taste experience. The shop also sells there own in shop made sauerkraut, which turns orange as the sausages cook in the kraut. I bought 1 1/2 lbs of the in shop made bacon, and it is amazing. I am sorry I did not buy more !! Smoked on the premises and sliced fresh from the slab, it is all natural and tastes the way bacon is supposed to taste, nothing like pre-packaged, full of water and nitrates stuff. The brothers Jorich are certainly doing it right. Although a little hard to find the first time, you will want to come back again, because you can not get this great quality anywhere else. Warning, they are closed on Sun & Mon and open 9-4 the rest of the week. Trust me, it is worth a special trip in the middle of the week for your next party or to stock up the freezer for football season. read more

In 1967 I had my first stick of Schmidt's sausage, right after I started at the steel mill. From that day on I was hooked. That was lunch once or twice a week for 30 years. Now retired in Myrtle Beach all of our guests are required to bring a fresh supply or I have it shipped. If you like high quality, rich flavor this is the best. Keep up the good work boys. read more

My personal favorite - a crockpot full of their smoked mild sausage and homemade sauerkraut. Cook until the kraut turns orange from the melding of flavors and spices. Schmidt's artisan sausage can't be beat. Their homemade sauerkraut and bacon are also delicious. If they are in season, I stock up on sarma - at $3.50 a pop, they are huge and tasty. I represent the third generation of Schmidt's satisfied customers. Absolutely the best Hungarian sausage and salami in the world. The dried is a fabulous snack. I take 3 double links of the non-dried either holiday mix or hot and mild mixed, add 1 medium can chicken broth, and 10 lbs. Peeled & quartered onions, and simmer for 3 - 4 hours. You need a good sized soup pot. The onions cook down and the sausage is so tender, you can cut it with a spoon. Great on a sub roll, or just in a bowl. A favorite family meal for three generations. read more

I am the 4th generation in my family to purchase sausage, bacon, sticks, kraut, etc at Schmidt's. My grandfather brought me to the shop in the early 80's for the first time and I will never forget the tempting smells from the sausage.
