First time here. We were passing through on our way home and stopped in for a late afternoon lunch. Food: They have a solid menu with a good variety of breakfast and lunch options. We ordered the patty melt, deep-fried green beans, the fish special (garlic-seared haddock), and finished the meal with a chocolate malt for dessert. The fish dinner came with a small salad, which was a nice way to start the meal. It included a nice mix of fresh vegetables, shredded cheese, and croutons. When the entrée arrived, everything was hot and tasty. The haddock was well seasoned with plenty of garlic, although I would have liked just a bit more searing. The crinkle fries were plentiful and very good. The patty melt was cooked exactly as ordered, medium rare, with a nicely seared patty. The combination of American and Swiss cheese was gooey and delicious, and the marble rye was grilled perfectly. The side of deep-fried green beans was also good, although there was a little more breading than I would have preferred. We noticed they offered shakes and malts, so we saved room for a chocolate malt with extra malt. It was a terrific way to end the meal. They serve it with both the glass and the metal mixing cup, which makes it easy to share. The entire meal was less than $30. It was the best value we found during our entire trip. Service: We received terrific service throughout our visit. Thanks, Mary! She greeted us right away with water and menus and was friendly and helpful from start to finish. Since it wasn't very busy, we even had a chance to enjoy a little conversation with her. She was genuinely pleasant, just like the rest of the staff we encountered. Atmosphere: With a name like Schmitty's, I was expecting more of a bar. Instead, it's a charming small-town café with plenty of personality. The checkerboard floor, red vinyl booth seats, a counter with classic stainless steel stools, and vintage photos on the walls all create exactly the kind of atmosphere I hope to find in a hometown café. This is definitely a place I'd return to. And if you stop in, be sure to ask for Mary. You won't be disappointed. read more

Went here for lunch on a weekday while traveling through town. It was great to see a steady stream of locals coming in the entire time we were there. Seemed like a good sign and the place to be for lunch. The decor was not what I was expecting from the outside, much more of a cute floral diner scene. I was quickly seated at a booth and got my drink. I ordered a grilled chicken wrap with the sidewinder fries. It was surprising that the grilled chicken wasn't chunks or strips, but seemed more like a rotisserie one that was shredded. I could have used a little more sauce in the wrap, but overall good. The sidewinders fries were exactly what I was hoping they would be and are deceivingly filling. They're kind of the texture of the spudsters that we had in school growing up; mashed potatoey on the inside with a crisp exterior. Overall, tasty food for a good price. read more

Love the Fall season when you can drive the backroads, enjoy the fall colors and discover a new restaurant. Schmitty's on Main did not disappoint. I ordered the Havarti and ham sandwich and the hubby wanted breakfast even though it was 2:45pm. Our waitress was really friendly and we had great service. We like our hot food hot which was exactly what we got. My Havarti and ham sandwich was grilled on garlic sourdough... delicious! I loved that my ham slices were grilled and the fresh sliced tomato gave it the perfect flavor. And you might think breakfast is breakfast but the melted cheese and grilled onions on the hash browns added another dimension of flavor to the perfectly cooked eggs and sausage patty. Hubby chose pancakes over toast and he is glad as he said they were fluffy and golden brown. And to finish off this wonderful experience was the Neillsville High School Homecoming parade. A wonderful surprise. If ever in the area, I'd recommend stopping. It would also be a great place to stop for coffee, dessert or ice cream. I've been here a few times since I've been coming up here for trail riding. Every time has been good, except today. This morning it was pretty busy. We sat down at 9:25. Waited until about 10:40 and noticed three other tables that showed up after us had received their food. We started to wonder if our ticket was ever put in. She checked on it and it was never put in. We had one fountain soda and we asked what we owed for the soda. She didn't hesitate and said $2.10. We SAT there for a hour and 15 mins. You would think they would have comped us for the drink and maybe have given us a gift certificate. We also over heard a gentleman express his experience while he was paying. He was not pleased. We ended up leaving and never ate. Very disappointed. read more

I had the howlin chicken sandwich and Smitty fries and I was pretty spicy and tasty. My husband had the Hawaiian chicken sandwich and it was ok not a lot of favor. The service was friendly and quick, and the food so delicious. I had the roast beef sandwich...not exactly health food, but you can't pass up a classic like this when it's on the menu. We stopped with a group 19 and they easily seated us and had great customer service. I had the fried shrimp basket and their cocktail sauce was the bomb! It had a great kick;) Fries were crispy and the party met was delicious. I totally recommend this restaurant. read more
