Di…read moreDonna Galleries specializes in museum-quality exhibitions and sales of European and American art from 1900 to 1970, with an emphasis on surrealism. They were founded in 2010 and moved into their current space on Madison Avenue at East 64th in 2016. (Love to visit art museums when you visit NYC? Don't sleep on the city's art galleries. Because Di Donna's exhibits are as museum-quality as they promise on their website.) Here's how it works. It's free to visit. (FYI they are closed on Sundays.) You'll walk up to a white door on Madison Avenue (it's marked to let you know you're in the right place) and press a call button. Then you'll be let into a hallway and you'll walk down it to the elevator which you take to Di Donna's floor. Then you walk into a small but intimate and modern gallery space (about three separate gallery rooms). It's free to visit, and there were a few staff members at a desk to answer questions and selling an exhibition catalogue. The exhibit I saw on Saturday (which closes on June 13, 2026) was Dalí: The Great Years. The exhibit was great. Many of the pieces were on loan from the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Since I've never been there, I probably hadn't seen any of them before unless they'd been loaned out for other exhibits I saw in the past. The exhibit was well-organized (it is chronological so it was easy to know where to start, where to go next, and where to finish) and had helpful information to read while exploring the galleries. I had a great time at Di Donna, and I've already signed up for their email list so I'll know when their next great exhibit opens!

Part of the Smithsonian system, they often have new and interesting exhibitions and, as I've said before, it's less crowded and more laid back. This time there was a piece on sound, it was like a sound bath, and it wasn't my vibe. But what I did find super interesting was the exhibit on production and industrial machines and the people who work on them. I had no idea there were 13 foot tall tires or that one regular man gets inside of them (with the inner rim of the tire coming to his chest) to prepare them for distribution. I thought it was some sort of weird art for a minute, before realizing it was a genuine photograph. I loved seeing all the electronics, large hydraulic systems, weaving apparatuses, and factory settings. It really makes you think about all that goes into making our daily lives livable, that we take for granted. It also had me feeling a true sense of appreciation for the people who do these niche jobs, many of which are a dying craft. This is always a great value. I'm not sure why there are some reviews knocking it. Maybe with today's overstimulation and short attention spans, the vibe is just too chill for them. *shrug*

It did entertain the students because they even had a chance to see beautiful details of pictures from, pencils and hats being made. They had the opportunity to even feel the inside of what a hat is made of and they learned about different kinds of materials. It was a very educational visit to where I would want to return on my own time. The pictures are really beautiful and interesting. They also had a downstairs activity room, where the students made their own little objects. It was a fun trip. Happy Yelping!

Nicholas Roerich is a Russian painter mostly known for his paintings of the Himalayas. He was also…read moreknown as a mystic and explorer. This museum has around 200 Roerich paintings and drawings in storage and on display. The paintings are serene, mostly landscapes in blues, pinks, lilac colors. Some of his sketches and designs are also on display. The architecture of the building is beautiful too. On the first floor there is a narrow hallway (hard to navigate with others around) with his family history, though I wish the museum taught more about his political beliefs, spirituality, and views on mysticism and telecommunication, as they are quite interesting. That being said, they do mention these things on their comprehensive website. Entry is free, though donations welcome. Staff friendly. You can buy prints and postcards as well as books and trinkets in the gift shop. It's a little out of the way, but there are other nearby hidden gems in uptown, including The Hispanic Society museum and library. You can also take a trip to Riverside Drive and park and Grant's Tomb. All of those stops are free as well.

Even though his…read morestyle evolved over time, there was something very specific about his work that carried through. His paintings of the mountains in the Himalayas were a high point for me. The luminosity reflected in the mountains was powerful. They also have a lot of information about his engagement in mysticism and his efforts toward protecting cultural monuments and promoting peace. The museum itself is housed in a lovely old mansion down by Riverside Drive. We were also made to feel welcome by the person at the front desk who provided us a lot of information about the collection and the artist. One nice touch is that they have some beehives next to the museum and they sell the honey harvested from those hives in the museum. The honey is delicious!

Throughout the year, different types of memorabilia are on display to the public before being auctioned. During my visit, I saw a wide variety of memorabilia from the Jim Irsay Collection. This included movie props, screenplays, music, sports, and autographs. I was especially impressed when I witnessed the Golden Ticket, a signed Babe Ruth baseball, and The Beatles drumset. Admission is free and complimentary cookies and coffee are served in the lobby. Due to the value of the merchandise, all visitors must pass through a metal detector. Large size bags are not allowed in the gallery, but they may be left at the Coat Check. The only disadvantage is that the exhibitions are temporary. Maybe not the biggest or the fanciest of galleries, but it's on the Bowery, which means it's within…read morewalking distance of SoHo and NoHo. It could be part of a wicked gallery walk in this area. I viewed their "Horrorpilation" series. I didn't even know that was a real word, but yes! it is! And the subject matter here was perfect . . . creepy, unsettling, otherworldly. The gallery is wide, open. And honestly, it's lit better than any gallery I've ever seen. So often galleries have glaring lights that make it difficult to view or take photos of works. This setup was perfect. The wall colors were also amazing. Moody, dark, luscious. Perfect accompaniment to the artworks. The colors, the artwork, the lighting . . . this was so well thought out. I know The Hole is one of my new go-to galleries.

The gift shop is adorable and on the very top floor is a swanky bar, where patrons and society members can enjoy a nice cocktail and fellowship. When I came here I went straight to the cafe to have lunch as I had worked out and hadn't eaten anything. I chose a chicken side salad, cheese biscuit, an Everything cookie and a hot skim cappuccino. After eating I felt renewed and went to the garden. Later we both returned to the cafe and Helga had refreshments. This cafe has some good food but it isn't grand. This museum is free on Wednesdays and the cafe is open till 9 pm in the summer months.

The museum is pay-what-you-wish for all New York residents, which is very nice! The main exhibit is about the history of New York City between the early 1600s and the present day. There is a mix of informational panels, artifacts, maps, and brief biographies of notable residents. There were about three special exhibits on display when I visited. The most interesting (in my opinion) of these was the history of protests and social movements in the city. It's worth a trip if you haven't been. I think both a tourist and local could appreciate this museum.

I would never have known who Jim Rennert is or learned to enjoy his sculptures of "Everyman". In a way when I look at Everyman I get a glimpse of Alfred Hitchcock, haha. The public exhibit is through December 31, 2021. I spent one day visiting all the locations on the map starting at 34th Street until I reached the gallery on 57th Street. It was a lot of walking but a beautiful day. I'm including a photo of the map in case you are interested in searching out Public Art. Or you may be a fan of Jim Rennert. I'm a fan of Cavalier Gallery. I'm thankful they give the public a means to view works up close. It's a big job to install these temporary works of art. Most are located in a Public Space with shopping and restaurants nearby as well as historic landmarks. I'm highly recommending you see this exhibit and visit this gallery to view even more works of art.
