Let's face it...everyone wants a Cheers, the place where everyone knows your name. Well, the School Grounds coffee shop is Daufuskie's version of Cheers. Instead of bar beverages, you'll find a great selection of high quality coffee, tea, and hot chocolate products. (If you're really lucky, you'll have a chance to sample some "Pam-Cakes"...but don't dally because they go fast!) But more importantly, Brian and Pam will make you feel like old friends from the moment you walk in the door. Visitors and locals gather here in what used to be the small cafeteria in the Mary Fields School, built by the WPA, to swap stories and gentle gossip. While sipping your coffee you can hear about the history of the school where Pat Conroy taught and later wrote "The Water is Wide," based on his experiences as a Daufuskie teacher of Gullah children. Photos of Conroy and his students hang on the walls. The charismatic Sallie Ann Robinson ("Ethel" in the book) may even wander in and regale you with stories about growing up on Daufuskie. The school is now used as the island's community center, and also houses the fascinating Daufuskie Blues indigo shop. Visitors shouldn't miss this opportunity to mingle with local islanders, to learn about the "true Daufuskie," and to enjoy coffee in a place that fits like an old shoe the moment you walk into the door. Great drinks and baked goods! I loved the caramel macchiato and my husband loved his frozen cherry lemonade. They also offer a baked good option, which was still warm from the oven when we arrived shortly after they opened. We especially loved the orange chocolate chip muffins. read more

This is a small place, in a very cool setting, owned by a really nice couple. It's in a historical school house and honesty is the only decent place to get food on the island. Mostly they just serve coffee but they do have small, homemade pastries that are amazing. Definitely check this place out! read more

Stopped at School Grounds Coffee while on a recent trip to Daufuskie Island. Wow - what a neat little place. Located in a historic two-room schoolhouse, this coffee shop is a must visit! Great coffee selection (even non-diary options), unique atmosphere and bit of local history provided by Pam and Brian. Well worth a visit.
