I attended the executive bourbon steward class at Moonshine University on Friday. It was a day filled with bourbon, bourbon science, bourbon tasting, bourbong smelling, bourbon history and more. While I know I have much more still to learn, this class left me feeling like I can make my way through a bourbon tasting -- even creating a tasting flight of my own! -- and talk about bourbon like I know something about it. And more than anything, it left me with even more appreciation for Kentucky's native spirit. The day started with a tasting and that set the tone for the rest of the day, which included classroom time and time in the miniature distillery that's connected to the classroom. Each student also took home a sensory kit with 30+ smells to learn so that we can better pick them out during a tasting. This was my favorite part of the whole experience. It's much harder to pick out something like banana (even though we've smelled and tasted them hundreds of time) than you think, much less more complex smells like leather. I liked how our instructor talked about assigning a sensory memory to each so that we can remember them more easily. Maybe it was the bourbon we had enjoyed that day so far, but I feel like about halfway through the sensory section I could start to better pick out these scents and flavors. And our instructor, Colin, kept everything informative and entertaining. You can tell how much passion he has for bourbon and was engaging throughout the day. The facility is great in that it has the classroom and distillery right next to each other. The executive bourbon steward program has a hefty pricetag, but if you have the means and passion I would definitely encourage it. I'm honored to now be a member of the Stave & Thief Society.

But these guys have professionally put together a wonderful curriculum that would teach a monkey how to make booze. And it's much more than that. This place really has an all star cast of teachers and speakers, all very willing to help any one out. All the speakers had decades of experience in the industry. Most of which Wer enjoyable to listen to. But I can't stress enough that if your thinking about going into the spirits industry, educate yourself. If your wondering where to go, look no further. Moonshine U lays it on thick in all the right places. Branding, business, finance, blending and mixing, and much much more. And the best part is they really know what theyr talking about. The speakers talk from honest trials and tribulations through their own experiences. I cant say enough how wonderful these people are. Truly delightful people here. I made some wonderful contacts and learned so much, I definitely got my money's worth. Not to mention all of the food was delicious. They were not skimpy in any way what so ever. Seriously folks, this place changed my life. In business and personally. I thank you all at Moonshine University for giving me the opportunity at a better chance in the spirit industry. She has healthy lunch options prepared each day by professional chefs. 64 acres of land, playgrounds and outdoor classrooms to run off that kid-energy... Great sports programs, we've done soccer each year and she continues to improve as a player and learn the value of teamwork. The friendships she's formed at St Francis are invaluable. I'm pleased to be in the company of other families there who hold education in high regard. The best testimonial I can give is that my kid really loves the school. She's excited to go back after summer break and is genuinely bummed out when she has a day off during the school-year. St. Francis makes learning fun for kids and streamlines the process for parents. We have found it to be a compassionate, inclusive environment where children are treated with respect and educational goals are individualized. As our children have gotten older the academic rigor has increased appropriately and our children have continued to be challenged. We have always believed that the faculty on both campuses is top notch. As we've gotten to know the high school faculty we have been astounded by their outstanding qualifications and passion for the subject matter-truly some of the finest high school faculty anywhere. As our oldest prepares to graduate we feel validated in our commitment to St. Francis School.

In short, my daughter was bit…read morerepeteadly by other classmates, she had a head injury on the playground resulting in an ER visit and two staples in her head. We kept her home for a week, and her first day back she was bit by another classmate. Please read my full review. My daughter had been at Providence since she was 6 months old. It was the hardest decision I have ever made to decide who to trust my first born child to care for. In infant care, there was stability and regular teachers there, and it was great. When our daughter became a toddler (she is 2 now) there was a lot of instability in the teachers in the class and level of care. Our daughter was bit repeatedly. On one occassion, it drew blood and she had a scar. We also tried to give a margin of grace as things do happen and we were never irate or punishing, we just sought to come to a solution. Recently, an older kid dropped a piece of PVC pipe down the slide resulting in an open head wound on my 2-year-old. The staff did not transport her to the hospital despite acknowledging that "she probably needed stitches." Her father and I immediately take to the ER where she gets two staples in her head and we monitor her for signs of concussion. This happened on a Friday and the director and school officials never emailed, called, or checked on her. I had to seek out the daycare director, Lisa, on Monday to ask her what happened and what they were doing about it. A conversation I shouldn't have had to prompt in my opinion. At the time, I calmly talked to Lisa and she seemed apologetic and receptive of feedback, which made me feel like it was an honest mistake. We keep her home for a week until her staples were removed. Her first day back was today, and she got bit by another classmate. I go into the daycare admittedly livid, but this time the director just spouts off statistics says "these things happen" and she hasn't had a hospitalization incident in x amount of years and her record speaks for itself. She just told me how Providence is a top notch facility and everything else. She was very condescending. It became clear to me that they see kids here as statistics. I don't care if this was the first time a hospitalization incident has happened, as a parent, whose kid was hurt stats are not comforting. I removed her from Providence, and I won't be bringing her back. I care about protecting my kiddo and other parents being able to protect their kiddos, so I wanted to share my story.

The overall philosophy of the place was akin to 70's free love, communal education. We addressed our teachers by their first names. My English class was held in a room with few tables and no desks. There were sofas and floor cushions everywhere. Most of the teachers were awesome. There were a few boneheads (you know who you are). Martha Ellison and Doug Proctor were a finely tuned educational machine. They churned out many creative, balanced, independent thinkers. Once they were no longer involved with the Brown School, everything seemed to slide downhill. The new regime swung in the direction of traditional education with standardized testing driving the process. It seriously sucked. I was fortunate enough to graduate the year that this regime took power. I was also fortunate enough to reap the benefits of the patient, devoted teachers at the Brown School. Special thanks go to Lois, Karen, and Gaye. They know know why. The dream team of Martha and Doug get five stars. Today, the Brown School hardly pays homage to her roots. So, we'll settle at three stars and call it even.

This week Louisville is experiencing the ballet in Central Park. I was lucky enough to catch the…read moreperformance of Hamlet & Ophelia. Joining with the team running Shakespeare in the Park, we watched the dancer perform on stage surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of trees and walking trails. This performance was free and included younger dancers and apprentices during the production. The more seasoned performers kept you engaged with beautiful choreography and facial expressions. I appreciated the more casual setting of being at the park. This included the performers and their outfits. This was only the second time I've seen the Louisville Ballet and it was a unique experience compared to being at the theater. Check out the upcoming season which includes Dracula, The Nutcracker and Carmen.

I signed up for the Louisville Ballet newsletter, and when I saw the choreographer's showcase coming up I thought this would be an awesome event where the choreographers and dancers wouldn't be limited to predetermined elements in their performances. The event exceeded my expectations! Everything, from the dancers, to the music, to the lighting, to the costumes, was so thoughtful. We really loved seeing what these artists could do when unbound. I hope to attend many more performances and continue to support the arts, really what makes life worth it. Highly recommend!
