My children have gone to the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) for years. It's helped build their confidence and more importantly their understanding. I love that they can take what they've learned in class and apply it practically to their school work, science fair projects, and the like. This isn't your run of the mill math tutoring center that teaches your child how to be a $2 calculator - the kids actually understand the theories behind what they are doing, so it's beyond rote memorization. As a student of RSM since kindergarten, I can personally attest to the fact that this tutoring program is without a doubt an integral part of any young child's schooling. Aside from the actual mathematics, RSM teaches a school of thought that isn't displayed in the regular classroom. They instill the methodology of thinking rather than memorizing and this has shown great results in my classes and math competitions. Without the weekly meetings, my intellectual and mathematical abilities would be no where near as gifted and refined. I can't say enough good about Russian School of Math. One of our children is gifted in math and the public school system told us it was impossible to assess a child who is advanced in math to see where they are at, and there was no possibility to advance him anyway. We came across the RSM in CA, and took him in for a meeting with the Principal. While she talked with us and explained the school's philosophy, she was at the same time testing our son to gauge his ability. In 30 minutes she determined what the public school had said was impossible to determine. We immediately signed him up - after 1 month RSM moved him up a grade and into the advanced class. That was 8 years ago - he has continued at RSM and loved every class - the teachers are talented and truly love math - the enthusiasm is infectious - the kids are challenged and supported to always push themselves out of their comfort zone. They are continually learning and having to explain and support their reasoning. There is no way possible he could have gotten this level of challenge and rigor at a regular school. Given this very positive experience, we thought it important to give our other children the same opportunity for a rigorous math foundation. All of our children now attend RSM. We believed RSM was such a key part of our children's education that when we needed to relocate several years ago we sought a location where they could continue to attend RSM. We chose Louisville because of the RSM location, met with the Principal at the RSM Louisville campus, and immediately enrolled our children. The Louisville location has furthered our outstanding experience at RSM. The teachers are talented and care about the success of every child. One of our children who is not gifted in math, initially had some difficulties grasping the concepts. But now, after a few years at RSM, his regular public school has moved him up a grade to the advanced math class, and he is the top student in that class. I give a great deal of the credit for that to RSM - although he was not naturally gifted at math, the teachers at RSM have done an outstanding job of teaching him to think logically and to fully and deeply understand essential math concepts. This is an outstanding advantage for a student to have before they get to high school where many students are struggling with concepts that were taught to early elementary school children at RSM. The early introduction of algebra ensures it becomes as much a part of the student's thought process as addition and subtraction, and they never face the overwhelming confusion of many students in middle/high school struggling with algebra for the first time. read more
