My 10 yr old daughter writes: School of rock has been a fantastic after school activity for our family. If you want to pick up an instrument this place is great. Our biggest life regret was not joining sooner. At school of rock you can have 101 lessons to learn an instrument of choice but you can also be enrolled in band practices where instructors teach you to chart and learn songs. During practice you practice playing songs with a band of kids your age and level. At the end you get to play a real show in front of a crowd. The instructors make learning and playing songs super easy and fun. I definitely recommend enrolling in school of rock. read more

We're big fans of the School of Rock Denver! Jim works hard to create special opportunities for students they couldn't get anywhere else: sitting in a sound check at the Paramount for Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa, & Todd Park Mohr, playing iconic local venues like the Bluebird Theatre & Hard Rock Cafe, and setting up a week-long summer tour through the Colorado mountain towns and New Mexico! Brandon works hard to fit lessons to families' schedules and always makes sure make-up lessons are fulfilled. He helps with rehearsals, and is a terrific substitute when instructors can't make a lesson. Ty runs a tight ship, while challenging & inspiring students at every level, beginner through advanced, to work hard & improve their skill set. He takes good care of kids, making sure they're safe at show venues in town and out on tour. Most of the instructors are gigging musicians and all have a high level of expertise and training to share with students. We've been amazed by the high-level musicianship of even the youngest students, at every SOR Denver show we've attended, & it's obvious something special is happening there! read more

So I have very very mixed feelings about school of rock. On one hand, the instruction is great. It really seems like a safe haven for some kids that need a place to belong. Everyone is super kind, welcoming and accepting. My daughters instructor was excellent. He gave her individualized instruction and she grew bc of it. I also love that they learn the classics of rock. Its so weird that all the boys look exactly like the stoners and metal heads from the 80s. On the other hand it is ridiculously expensive. Unless you are free lunch poor for a scholarship or super rich, its way expensive. The place is run by rocker dudes, which is great because they are super into what they do and have great connections to venues and bands, but is not great bc they have been pretty disorganized. They communicate, but its on the lax side. If you are not fully present and managing everything you will miss stuff. For example, They scheduled our lessons wrong and my girl ended up losing 2-4 lessons bc of it. The thing I find most upsetting is the final production, the rock concerts. You are required to purchase 8 tix at 10.00 each after paying a kajillion dollars for SOR to rehearse and practice. I feel like they should build tix into the price. It feels a bit like blackmail. Its yucky. Then your kid performs in like 1/4 of the final acts, and some of the kids are goofing around on stage, playing with stuff, and not really focused. There are about 20 kids performing so they cycle through all those performances. There are a few kids that are really good, (the drummer was phenomenal) and that is fun, but most kids are learning, so there is that. Overall it was a good experience, but not worth the money. If your kid loves rock and needs a place to belong and you have tons of money to spare, this is your place. read more

My kids have been enrolled in SoR Denver for five years - eventually mastering proficiency at their instruments, meeting peers interested in rock and eventually forming their own band. We love the leadership, instruction, and opportunities to perform in front of crowds - even Red Rocks. The seasonal shows and performance program are integral to becoming musicians. My son did a week-long summer camp and is now enrolled in a weekly rehearsal / band program. He'd been taking drum lessons for awhile with a private instructor and enjoyed it but was often a little bored playing and practicing alone. After his camp, his interest in drums increased significantly since now he's motivated to play with other kids. He wants to practice now, whereas before we had to push him a bit. One-on-one lessons are important too, but the experience of learning how to play with others and perform on stage is invaluable. It is a bit of a crap shoot on how much each kid gets to play during performances since it's dependent on how many other kids play the same instruments - for example, if there are 5 kids playing drums and only 2 guitar players, the guitar players play on a lot more songs and the drummers might only get to play 1 or 2. The instructors have all been great - totally into music and the whole scene, so authentic rock musicians, yet super friendly and encouraging to the kids - in other words, not "too cool" to engage with them. Our good friends' son was enrolled in SoR Denver for years and became an excellent guitar player and made some good friends, so we're excited to see how much our son enjoys SoR. read more

The Boulder School of Rock is great. My daughter has come out of her shell which I enlarge attribute to her wonderful School of Rock guitar instructor. Because of him she will be preforming this month in a concert in front of an audience. I would never of believed this could happen. The are very accommodating with scheduling and making up lessons too. Over all I have been really happy with my experience at the BOULDER location. I cannot find the sight to write a Yelp review for that specific location. read more

Really amazing - so much more than just music lessons! Our son is not only receiving musical training from first-rate musicians, they are teaching him about the importance of working as part of a band - great work ethic, responsibility, cooperation - and they lead by example. Our son really enjoys Little Wing. Dr. Erika is an amazing teacher, and we can see all of the kids having fun and really learning about beats and music. It is great that our child is exposed to so many different instruments, and has the opportunity to play each one. My son has been involved in Denver SOR for 3 years, since he was 11. It has been amazing to watch his musical talent and confidence grow. Each trimester he is excited about working with his team/band to prepare for the performance. While the monthly fee is expensive, it is not more than we pay for our other kids who are in competitive sports and the team camaraderie and requirement to work well with others is just like that of a sport team if not better. read more

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience there. In the three months that my son went for lessons, we experienced the following: 1) they cancelled twice; 2) my son had four different instructors; 3) we reported to a lesson to have to return home because there was no one to provide instruction during our regular scheduled time; 4) the instructor was 20 minutes late with no explanation; and 5) the instructor left my son in the music room to go have a 5 minute conversation with other employees. I would NEVER recommend this place. read more

My son has been a student at Denver School of Rock (SoR) for nearly 4 years. He has progressed from a kid playing to a teen who really rocks and PERFORMS. This performance based program takes kids to the next level. The teachers are amazing, talented, and knowledgeable. They are giving my son the music education he would not receive in a public school. They understand his goals of progressing with music into college and challenge him both in regards to music theory and music performance. The kids attend for a 45 minute lesson each week and then spend time in a 3 hour rehearsal. Seasonal, themed shows are performed 4 times a year. These are not music recitals, they are actual rock concerts performed at various venues throughout metro-Denver. Advanced rockers can audition for the House Band and All-Star programs. My son has developed terrific friendships with other rockers from the metro area. Some of these students have earned the opportunity to go on the road performing in the summer and some have performed at Red Rocks! Every student at SoR knows they have the potential to get to that level and the staff helps them hone their skills to get to that level. If you are looking for a positive experience for your rocker to grow and develop this is your place!!!! read more
