We were so sad to see her go but Right Start was able to find a new teacher immediately. We were hesitant at first, but Taryn (our new piano teacher) is just as amazing! We inquired about voice lessons in conversation, and we're so happy to learn that Taryn also taught voice! So my daughter sees Taryn once a week for both piano and voice. It's only been about 4 month of voice lessons and my daughter is enjoying it. She has learned many techniques to improve her singing and expand her range. There is a huge difference between her singing before voice lessons to singing now. I would definitely recommend Right Start to anyone who loves music. They make you love it even more!

Our 10 and 11 year old girls have been attending SOR McKinney for just about 18 months as part of…read morethe Rock 101 program. We discovered the program through a colleague of my wife's whose son has been a participant in the Frisco school's program for several years. Both my wife and I were in band in school many years ago, so we thought this would be a great opportunity for the girls to learn a practical instrument and get some performance experience to help them not be shy. Since joining the program, the girls have had a number of instructors: one that has an advanced education in classical guitar, one that has a higher education background in early childhood development, and several that have toured nation-wide as real musicians. Some of those instructors were in fact students once in other SOR schools. And throughout the program, the entire staff, and even culture of the school, has been very positive and supporting. In the past 18 months, the girls have played multi-venue concerts in Deep Ellum twice, they have played in a battle of the bands at the House of Blues, and numerous other concerts at bars and restaurants in and around McKinney and Frisco. My younger girl stays glued to the electric guitar, and my older girl mainly plays the drum kit, but sings and plays bass on the side. Together, our girls teamed up with a little boy in their 5th grade class and played a song (from SOR) in their elementary school's talent show a few months ago, and they rocked the house and put some elementary school teacher's in shock! My wife and I were in awe, and we both commented what it would been like to have been rock stars even before going into junior high and middle school (we were nowhere near this cool!). I haven't seen any program similar to what SOR is doing: they work on temp, rhythm, and style all the while driving the kids to perform in front of others. They leave reading music and theory to the public schools to teach (which for me was the not-so-fun part). Doing it this way, the kids are only learning that music is fun and rewarding, but my oldest is starting 6th grade in the fall where she will start complementing what she has been learning with those extra skills of reading music, etc. Its been a very good program; very positive results. To address the other reviewer that alluded to drugs being present at the school: I am a software development manager that runs an international organization which in the past has required me to have security clearances. My wife is a top nurse practitioner who is respected as deeply knowledgeable in multiple fields. There is absolutely no way we would allow our kids to be involved in this program if there was any hint of illegal activity. I have sat in their building for countless hours waiting for practices to be over, and I have never seen this. The building is definitely shabby chic (meaning a little bit of a dump), but so are many of the performance venues--that's part of what it means to be a performer. But, its good enough; the program is expensive enough without needing to make it into a lounge. We highly recommend.

The teachers are cool and make everything feel less like a class and more like a hangout. Plus, BandCore lets them be part of a band, write their own music, and perform--it's like living the dream of being in a real band, but with a lot of support and encouragement. The school's teaching style is to teach you how to play, sing or produce on the instrument of your choosing right from the start. My kids have been going since the beginning of the year and are so happy to be learning how to play contemporary songs. They're excited for class every week. The best part is being able to watch the students perform what they've learned once a month. All the student musicians sound and rock so authentically usually they sound better than the original singers or band members. Even as a parent I love the vibes in this school from the teachers to the owner - everyone is highly professional, helpful, knowledgeable and ready to rock! I highly recommend for anyone, any age that has been wanting to learn an instrument, want to sing, or learn recording production.

This is her first time touching piano - she saw her friend playing piano and wanted to try. Our goal was to give her the exposure and see how it goes from there. After 3 lessons, she started saying that she doesn't like it anymore --- which I was afraid might happen when it started getting a bit harder (e.g., learning notes, etc). I talked to Teacher Lawrence and he asked what her favorite TV show or song was. I told him about the theme song from "Miraculous Ladybug", and by the following week he had a simple version of the song ready for her to learn. She has been very motivated to learn how to play the whole song. We appreciate how flexible teacher Lawrence is to keep it entertaining/interesting for the kids.

Bad experience My kid's teacher was off, and we were given a sub teacher. This guy called Juan, wasn't patient with my girl and made her cry. Then after she cried, he just sat back and played with his phone. I DID NOT pay $40/ session just to have my kid cry and the teacher playing with cellphone. The owner Melody Ouyang was on vacation. The business manager apologized, but I never heard from the owner about the horrible experience. All they did was, to schedule another makeup class for my kid. But it was a terrible experience for my kid. Policy They have this ridiculous withdrawal policy, which is they charge $50/child when we want to withdraw kids from the school during Sept-July. No other schools has withdrawal charge like this. So on June 2, 2018 I was surprised to get a bill that charged me $164/kid for June tuition and another $189/kid for September tuition. Well, they said there's a $25/kid enrollment fee for 2018-2019 year and that I must pay Sept tuition to hold my kids' spots for 2018-2019. I said I'd like to withdraw my kids due to the bad experience we got (see above) and the business mgr said no refund for the amount we've already paid (September tuition) and when I pressed to move the Sept tuition to cover July, so I don't have to pay for July tuition, she kept saying she needed to get Melody Ouyang's permission (which Ouyang was gone on vacation for a long time, more than 2-3 weeks). I can't pull my kids in June/July, because they require a 30-day notice prior to 1st of each month. Long story short, I don't want Ouyang to come back and deny my request to move September tuition to cover July. If she declines in late June, then we must cram 9 lessons into 3 weeks. In July, they only have 3 weeks of lessons (due to Independence Day week). So before Ouyang comes back from vacation, I requested to just pay July tuition and cram 9 lessons into 5 weeks time. July lessons: 3 lessons plus September lessons 4, plus make up classes. They acted like they were giving me a favor and didn't charge me $50 withdrawal fee/kid (which I was told, that $50 fee is if I pull my kids during the school year). But I finished 2017-2018 year, from September 2017 to July 2018, so actually, there was no reason to charge me $50 withdrawal fee/kid in the first place. I am just appalled and disappointed after having been a loyal customer more than 3 years, to be treated like this. Never heard back from owner (Ouyang) personally. I sent her an email about the horrible experience and never heard back from her. I put my kids into the school because she's a Juilliard grad, but my kids were never once under her tutelage - understand Ouyang is very busy. So the fact that Ouyang is a Juiliard grad, doesn't help my kids' piano skills at all.
