Quick change of plans: bought tickets for Sunset Sail on the Malabar X. My mom was a little freaked out that we'd get seasick, absolutely no one had that experience. Gorgeous weather, gorgeous boat, super friendly crew, and now I know why my cousin loves sailing! Bonus was one of the brand new crew members was being trained so we positioned ourselves close by to hear all the instructions. It was SO INTERESTING!! Crew member Kass (I hope I spelled that right) was freaking awesome, she was so informative and clearly loves her job. We don't visit Salem often in the summer, but when we do we will be on this boat. Side note, the bathroom on the ship wasn't working and the public ones on land were closed when we got there for the sunset cruise, so plan accordingly.

He fit us in on an early morning excursion and we couldn't have asked for a better time. The weather was perfect and Capt Ted was like your favorite Uncle, great with the kids, full of funny jokes and interesting facts as we boated around the Essex River and Cape Ann. The boat is no frills but has a private bathroom down below with some seating and one comfy rotating chair up top. Be prepared to stand or sit on your cooler that you should bring. The cooler with food & drinks is the only thing you need to bring. He supplies the fishing stuff (poles, bait, etc) I would suggest you bring your own life vests if you have them. Kids must wear them at all times. At our first stop, my son caught a gigantic fish! Sadly that was the only one of the day. Capt Ted was kind enough to filet it for us. We took it home and grilled it and it was delicious! We also checked 2 lobster traps but no lobsters, in there (boo!) but we saw some cool looking crabs and horseshoe crabs. Parking isn't great as you have to drop your stuff off at the boat ramp behind some apartments and then park down the street.

Ted, the captain and owner, contacted me immediately and assured me that we would have a fun, educational, relaxing and beautiful day on the river. He did not disappoint! Ted is incredibly knowledgeable of the area and its deep history. He played wonderful music and taught us how to fish! By then end I might have even been more hooked than my hubs. And yes, we caught a big one! What was most surprising was the stunning terrain. I never expected a river to look like that. Gorgeous marshes, birds and fish everywhere, sandbars and beaches....I cannot wait to go back and bring my 9 year old.

Had an amazing experience on this 3-4 hour long boat ride (we left around 1:30 pm and returned…read morearound 5pm) seeing 1 finback whale, three humpback whales, and a huge pod of Atlantic white sided dolphins! Info for potential whale watchers: there is free parking in Gloucester on Sundays, and we had pretty good experience with bringing our own snacks, but you can buy snacks and beers on the boat as well. The boat itself as two bathrooms and a lower and upper deck. They usually go out to Stellwagen bank / Jeffrey's ledge depending on where they believe the whales may be (10 to 30 miles out). The cape Ann whale watch and Boston harbor also goes to the same locations and I believe they communicate. We were pretty close to cape Ann whale watch and they seemed to be a lot more crowded than our boat. For practically the entire trip, the marine biologist was telling us facts and guiding us in how to look at the wildlife. He even came out at the end to chat with us one on one. He was quite knowledgeable and even knew the whales by name! Apparently, it's common to see dolphins, finback, minke, and humpback whales during this season (June to October). Humpbacks deliver the exciting plunge into the water with the lifted tail. We were even able to see a cool feeding lunge from a whale named patches. We saw a lot of birds as well! We luckily were able to go to Jeffries ledge this time which is only about 10 miles out. On other trips this summer they have been going to Stellwagen bank which is 30 miles out. I highly recommend 7 seas if you want to have an enjoyable trip onto the ocean and relaxing encounter with amazing marine mammals!! I believe they will refund you if you don't see any whales, but it's quite likely to see whales as they are extremely knowledgeable on finding the whales.

My mom and I went on a morning whale watch with 7 Seas when we spent a long weekend in Gloucester a…read moreweek or so ago. It was my third whale watch (but my first on the East Coast) but my mom's first, and we both had a great time. 7 Seas has been in business since 1983, and I can see why. The staff were friendly, the boat was great (lots of indoor and outdoor space, as well as a bar for food, snacks, and drinks), and the naturalist was incredible (she narrated our tour). It was a rough day out on the water (tons of wind) when we went out on our watch, but the staff didn't give up and they changed up our route and made sure we saw some whales (although it's important to keep in mind that you are not guaranteed a whale sighting if you do a tour). Once we found a pair on humpbacks, the boat followed them for a while! Then they took us to another pair and we followed them for a while! It was amazing to see these whales in the wild. We got some incredible photographs, and I was gasping repeatedly at the whales. Just an incredible experience.

Turns out it doesn't when you're surrounded by that many of them. We saw more whales than I could count, and I learned far more than I'll ever be able to remember. Our guide, Tina, has over 30 years of experience, and it shows. She wasn't just rattling off facts from a script. She was genuinely passionate, engaging, and had a way of making every sighting feel like the most exciting one of the day. I talked with her for a minute after the tour, and she was every bit as genuine off the microphone as she was on it. You could tell she sincerely appreciated everyone who came out. The trip ran a little over three hours, and I never once found myself checking the time. Between the whales, the scenery, and Tina's commentary, the whole experience kept my attention from beginning to end. One thing I wasn't expecting was the gift shop. Usually places like this charge "you're already here" prices, but everything was surprisingly reasonable, and there was a good variety for kids and adults alike. If you're anywhere near Gloucester and even remotely considering a whale watch, stop considering it and just book the trip. It's one of those experiences that's every bit as good the second time around.

I reserved an evening cruise for a surprise engagement and they were both very interesting, polite and welcoming people. My guests were blown away by the experience and I hit it out of the park with my surprise, my fiance loved it. I spoke with Capt. Claude before hand and even though I didn't need to ask for much I felt that they were welcoming and would do anything to make the experience a memorable one. Even a last minute request made within reason was accomodated. First of all the boat is beautiful, and it's big and I think that 6-10 people could comfortably enjoy a cruise with out feeling cramped. Every one of my guests were excited and comfortable. ..light snacks were provided and drinks were made available even though this was BYOB. Don't worry about utensils like I did, there were glasses for the toast and champagne had i forgotten to get some. I will spare no praises in saying that they certainly made this experience as easy as possible for me and I appreciate it.
