My wife and I are not always that particular, but when it came to the deck on our new house we had many requirements that we know offered Matt a challenge. We love to be outside and plan (and do) spend a lot of time on our deck. Key requirements included: 1) Limited to no obstruction of view out our back windows. 2) Natural look and flow with wooded backyard. 3) Functionality (dining, grilling, entertaining). Matt was very attentive and responsive to our needs. He set expectations and from design through implementation of our deck Matt and his team put on quite a display of pride, craftsmanship, and professionalism providing our family an outdoor living space we know we will enjoy for many years to come. We had a couple of interviews with Matt where we were able to review our requirements and thoughts and Matt did a fantastic job in conceptualizing what we were looking for. He took measurements of the area behind our house and provided a handful of layouts using computer aided design software. We found a layout that was real close to what we thought would be best and worked with Matt on some refinements. Matt helped us determine that Tigerwood would be the best material to provide the quality, value and look we were going for. Matt came up with an awesome tier design that provided room for easy flow out of the house with a couple deck length steps down to a lower area. This layout provided for both functionality and a solution to limit obstruction to our view out of our house. We also decided to go with a black aluminum rail which also blends well with the woods as a back drop. Thomas Decks has many options for material, solutions, and ultimately a one of a kind outdoor living space. Matt set the tone for the project as a very dedicated craftsman who delivers a quality product with great attention to detail. There were just some things that this team does that display's quality. While the deck frame is your traditional pine, they used larger posts and joists. They added a little extra flare to the actual deck floor by framing it in and adding a couple rows of boards that run down the middle of the deck perpendicular to the floor boards. He poured a nice concrete pad where the steps come down which match the shape of the angled staircase. Considering the grade of our back yard he put in a couple small retaining walls and worked with us on putting in a few stepping stones. Thomas Decks does it all! Thomas Decks is who you will want to work with if you are pursuing a deck or outdoor space project. They delivered us a great design with personal touches, a fantastic looking and quality deck, and met all expectations and then some. After interviewing a few other builders and architects, we knew this was the best choice. Due to their high demand, waiting to get started was the hardest part. Then, Jeff managed the project and the builder Josh provided multiple photos and detailed daily updates--as well as pleasant and engaging on-site discussions. The craftsmanship, problem-solving, and fairness in pricing is unmatched. One important part of the project was an outdoor sauna, shipped from Europe. The team took this on to build the kit, wire the heater and lighting, and make it a centerpiece on the exposed aggregate patio, along with a custom-placed hot tub that's accessible from ground and deck. The deck with a large, covered pergola will probably last for decades. Just a few more points...they ALWAYS left the site safe and neat each day, communicated what things were coming up, and overcame unforeseen site issues quickly in ways that made sense. The entire team is great to work with--honest, transparent, responsive, and collaborative. I usually have buyers remorse for any large purchase. Not with this one.

I hate these fees in every capacity working with contractors, but I can't recall this ever being present outside of plumbers and electricians. I didn't proceed to set-up the consultation because their reviews online and competitive estimate should provide enough knowledge to their potential customer vs. instead of pinning them into working with them because of the thought of, "Well, we've already paid $100 towards working with this company..."
