Nothing bad, but nothing special. We did the standard thing and searched various apps to identify options for dinner on the first night in Berlin. Schwarzwaldstudben is in a good area with lots of backup options if full/closed or not to your taste. The staff were good, the menu is traditional German (soup was very nice, mains were average) and the food ... average? Basically, I was trying to find something spectacular and we got something that was.....good. So, it's nice, it's cheap you won't be upset, but you won't be blown away either. read more

This place was just fantastic. Funny bartenders, friendly staff, and the food was insane. German food is among the most underrated in the world, and this place arguably does it best. It was tough to choose what we wanted, but we landed on the pear and goat cheese Flammkuchen, Gebratene Maultaschen, and the special. It was all great, but the Flammkuchen was by far the star of the show. We considered going back a second time before we left just for that. read more

I was impressed with everything. The portions are very large as I couldn't finish my plate. The service was friendly, etc. I highly recommend this restaurant. I had the maultaschen and it was fantastic. It was a nice dish which felt like a mix of scrambled eggs and ravioli. It bit oily has other reviews had said, but the salad w/ an excellent dressing was a nice match. The restaurant also had a nice atmosphere and a good hefeweizen on tap. read more

Came for dinner on a whim just walking by the place. It is basically a quiet, candlelit traditionally German neighborhood restaurant. The food was outstanding. We split a couple appetizers and I had a buttery-good baked spätzle with ham while my friend had the schäufele or pork shoulder served over potatoes also with a side of spätzle. One of my favorites spots for simple, 'home cooking' style food served up in a casual dining atmosphere. Beyond the Schnitzel (which is very good), they have a variety of traditional South German dishes. The spätzle is recommended - I love the spätzle with lentils and sausage dish. Had breakfast here before going to the Museum Island (about fifteen minutes walking). Food is good, ambience and decor very good, plus they have English menu & friendly waitress spoke English. Their breakfast menu is very limited, but if the opportunity presents itself I would love to try it for dinner. read more

I'm embarrassed to admit I came here four nights in a row for the schnitzel and bratkartoffeln. Susie our waitress was always lovely although she never remembered us. Then again she may have just pretended not to remember because she thought we were mad for coming in night after night. Having lived on a diet of meat, meat, and more meat for a week in Berlin, I ended up ordering a simple mixed salad at this small but perfectly formed place in the heart of Berlin. This could have been a huge mistake in many places, but the salad was nicely dressed and accompanied by a large basket of various breads. Yum. read more

Great spot for nouveau German food. Excellent English is spoken by the really sweet staffers. I had the roast pork, potatoes and sauerkraut dinner. Really tasty and reasonably priced. They seemed to be a bit overwhelmed by their popularity, as once the place started filling up, we had trouble getting the attention of our server... or anyone else who worked there. This was on a particularly freezing/nasty Friday night, so maybe one of their people didn't show up. Get there before 7pm and you'll have a perfect experience. read more

Food is a disgrace to south- German cuisine. Lack of flavour is masked by usage of way too much salt and oil. Brought friends from abroad to get a taste in typical German cuisine but should have know better from prior visits. Be aware of this tourist trap. read more

This transplant from the Black Forest is a lively and welcoming pub with Southern German food. Try the Käsespätzle delicious noodles baked with cheese, Maultaschen (like ravioli), crispy Schnitzel, or pizza-like Flammkuchen with bits of bacon and sour cream, all washed down with traditional and tasty Rothaus beer. A large tile stove makes for a cozy atmosphere, while mounted antlers and other quirky paraphernalia peer down from the walls. Excellent!!! This is down the street from our rental apartment and we ventured in for dinner tonight. After reading the reviews we decided to go early, about 6:45 and it was full with several people waiting. After a while we were seated at a shared table, fine with us, and had one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The schweineschnitzel paniert was fantastic, tender, flavorful and served with bratkartoffeln and gurkensalat. Can't wait to return and try something else. Wait staff were super friendly, prices were good and the cafe was very nice. If you're in the area, give it a try, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. read more

Vortrefflich (superb)! Based on previous Yelp recommendations we stopped in for an early Sunday lunch. Schwarzwaldstuben is a well-appointed, congenial and cozy tavern at the intersection of Tucholsky and Linienstraße near Rosenthaler Platz. We chose a window table near the huge green-tiled furnace. Although the young waitress spoke perfect English, she good-naturedly took our order in my striving German. For starters I ordered an excellent home-brew Rothaus beer and my wife had an equally delicious Trollinger dry red wine. It was a little before noon and the waitress informed us that the kitchen didn't start lunch until 12 o'clock precisely, but she would submit our orders ahead of time. (You gotta love the German sense of precision and order.) My wife got the Badisches Taufeles or boiled pork while I got the Wildbratwurst or wild game sausages. The sides included potatoes and freshly pickled white cabbage kraut. We shared both dishes and slowly savored the rich combination of flavors on our palates - succulent chunks of lean ham tender enough to cut with a fork and expertly grilled wild boar and venison links cut with a raspberry mustard and rosemary-infused mashed potatoes (to-die-for). The menu also has spaetzle and flammenküchen (German answers to pasta and pizza respectively.) It all looked great coming out of the little kitchen manned by three kinetic young cooks. This is true German cuisine with a local-source philosophy and simple business plan, to wit it's an all-cash establishment because "we'd rather spend money on the best ingredients than share it with the banks." Only one dessert on the menu, the caramelized Kaiserschmarmm (15 minutes to prepare) or German smashed crêpes with fresh berry compote, cherry sorbet and Schlag (whipped cream). We shared this absolutely delicious conclusion to our Berlin gastronomic adventures and then took a long walk home to Kreuzberg. read more

Cool place to go for a Swabian dinner. It's a good place to go to try something different from the normal German cuisine you find in Berlin. Our dinner group had maultaschen, flammkuchen, and a pork plate. All were very good and we finished with a dessert I highly recommend - Kaiserschmarrn. Schwarzwaldstuben has consistently been raising prices over the last year(s). The last time I went there with a friend, I ordered my usual Kässpätzle and asked the waitress if it was just my impression or if they had become more expensive. Her answer was "Yes, we've upped the prices. I mean, with all the tourists in this area, you just HAVE to!" I said, "Well, I am from Berlin, so I should really leave then, shouldn't I?" but I stayed. She laughed, clearly without realising how offensive her comment had been. The food was OK, but EUR9 for a plate of Kässpätzle, EUR5.50 for a mixed salad is just ridiculous in my opinion. The quality is OK, but nothing more. Also, the place has gone from "charming" to "this doesn't really look very clean". No recommendation anymore, unfortunately - the place is always full and they're clearly trying to milk the cash cow. read more
