First tip - get there early so you can explore the general area. We had a little time, so we hiked to Balanced Rock for some great views and some photo ops. "Gorge Underground" is an abandoned limestone mine (where they accidentally struck water and flooded it beyond use). Luckily, it's great for a kayaking adventure! Our guides were super nice and very informative. With one in front, and one bringing up the rear, you were free to wander (just a little) versus single-file through a boring tour. The experiences is just really cool. At one point, we ended up in the farthest-in part of the cave, and we all turned off our headlamps. Pitch dark. The guide had some funny stories, but then asked if it was anyone's birthday coming up (it was my son's in a couple days). So we all sang happy birthday to him (but he couldn't be embarrassed - it was dark and nobody knew who he was!). After finishing our 90 minute tour, it was time to dock. My wife and I lagged behind to be the last ones out, giving us probably 10 extra minutes of "taking it all in". One regret is that we didn't plan ahead enough to get the clear kayaks with LED lights. That would have been another layer of "cool". I would recommend to anyone. The water is still as can be, so it's a gentle paddle that anyone can do.

Thoughtful, objective, and deeply knowledgeable, he handled the complicated dynamics of a slave-owning border state with grace and clarity. He was also incredibly kind in his portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln, helping us see her not as a caricature, but as a layered, resilient, and deeply human figure. Each room is meticulously curated. Not every item was original to the Todd or Lincoln families, but everything was period appropriate and helped tell the story. The artifacts weren't just on display. The picture provided is the original itinerary I paid for and the second itinerary is what was given to us once we arrived in Seattle. The reason I signed up for the trip was because I was going to go to the space needle and pike place market in Seattle, Mt. Rainier National Park, Columbia River Gorge waterfall tour, stop in Cresent City for seafood, visit the Redwood forest, do a wine country tour in Santa Rosa, and spend the day in San Francisco. As shown in the original itinerary. The itinerary we got was not what we paid for. We left the airport and went to the space needle for a 10 minute photo take outside the space needle. We didn't even see Pike Place Market. We went to Denny's for lunch. We left Seattle and drove 35 miles east to Fall City to Snoqualmie Falls. Stopped for approximately 30 minutes. Then drove to Chehalis which took 2 hours and was checked in by 4:00. Absolutely nothing to do or see around there and very limited on places to eat. Day 2 we headed out to Mt. Rainier leaving at 9 am we got there around 11:00. Went to visitors center for lunch. No sit down dining. All grab and go and with outrageous prices for food like $7.00 for an egg salad sandwich so spent $11 on junk food for lunch. Drove back to the hotel which was a 2 hour trip. Back at the hotel by 4 pm. Ate dinner at the only restaurant that was nearby. Day 3 drove from Chehalis to Crater Lake a 6 1/2 hour drive stopping at DQ for lunch on the way. Spent maybe 30-45 minutes there then drove from Crater Lake to Grants Pass for another 2 hours. Ate dinner at a nearby Applebee's. Day 4 we've started our drive from Grants Pass to Santa Rosa a 7 hour trip. Stopped twice in the Redwood forest for 20 minutes each stop. Arrived at the most outer edge of Santa Rosa around 6pm with only McDonald's and Panera Bread to eat at and absolutely nothing else around to see or do. Day 5 we left the hotel at 9 am to drive 1 and 1/2 hours to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge each way and then return to the hotel only to get there to not be able to park the bus due to rally going on. So we were able to spend 2 hours at Fisherman's Wharf which lunch took up an hour of that. Back on the bus at 2 pm and and later back at the hotel in Santa Rosa at 4 pm. Then we got to get up at 2am to make the hour and half ride BACK to the San Francisco airport to fly out at 6 am.

Weirdly, the house itself has separate parking and is not that easy to walk to from the surrounding park; perhaps for some jurisdictional reason. I walked the grounds, but didn't actually tour the house. It seemed worth doing. The rest of the park offers a nice view of the surrounding farmland and easy paved trails, and I would say the people getting their workout on made a good decision to come here. Definitely be ready for pollen and heat (season-dependent of course).
