After trying to find a decent place in Austin to cut asian hair (asian haircut), I found this place via Reddit and made an appointment with Sarah Kim via the website. She was running just a smidge behind schedule, but once I sat down, she asked me how I wanted my hair style to look. She diligently looked for the line separating my hair growth direction and used that as a starting point. I was pretty pleased with the haircut, but I was taken aback since I was told over the phone that a haircut is $25 and a haircut + Shampoo was $30. However, I was charged the full $30 amount for the haircut even though I never got the shampoo/wash. Other than that, I was find with the haircut and would recommend this place for asian haircuts. Big two middle fingers to this place as they "trimmed" my short hair cut into... basically nothing. I have no hair left and can't even fix it so I have to wait for it to grow out. I walked in with a classic bob cut that grew down to almost touch my shoulders, asking for a trim and maybe some thinning out because it was getting heavy for the summer weather. Guy commented on how "tacky" my hair was and suggested layers. I told him maybe some light layers and he hacked away like 2/3 of my ALREADY SHORT hair away, cut 3 inches off of my hair when I told him I WANTED TO GROW IT OUT Honestly I don't even know what the hell even happened in there it's like he saw my hair and decided he wanted to try 4 different techniques on it and told me I had to pay an extra $5 on top of the original price of $35 (for a SHORT HAIR CUT???) since he put in the layers that I didn't want. I asked him to make me beautiful and he made my 22 year old face end up with hair thats a mix of "let me speak to your manager" and zach&cody's mom (Carey) Even with my amateur set of eyes I can see that the hair had NO style or shape whatsoever... not uploading pictures because I'm literally that humiliated. It's been 2 months and I'm still growing it out and it still looks bad. I literally just don't have hair left l o l I cried the whole drive home and called off work the next day because I was shook. So if you want a botched hair cut, I 100% recommend this place. If you need to cry, this place will surely help you do it. read more

I really like this place a lot . Alice takes her time whether she is giving you a haircut or highlights.she is very relaxed and cares about your hair and how it looks. She gave me a wonderful highlight last time I came in and I like she is within walking distance from my house. I will be back and I think her place does nails as well but I have never tried that her. It is a bit pricey more than style america or Supercuts but she always asks you questions about your hair and is concerned. I have a bad habit of pulling Out my hair and she notices and questions me every time. She is also very patient when you can't stop fidgeting. It is a very professional but relaxing place to go. She is extremely talented, very attentive to what you tell her, and creative with any type and length of hair. I say that because I am neither Asian nor one with overly demanding hair, two things I have seen in other reviews about Scissors Sound Salon. This is the most awful perm experience I have ever had! I want to perm my hair before my vacation, and right now I can't even look at myself in the mirror. It took me almost three hours there, and then I found that my hair is totally destroyed, it became more delicate and really easy to break. I also had a trim cut for my hair, and it turned out to be a very weird shape and layers. I don't know how to deal with it right now. Not recommend at all. read more

I came here expecting the best because of all the positive reviews. To put it simply: one of THE worst experiences I've had at a hair salon. To start, I made an appt online with Sarah because most of the rave reviews had her name, and when I got into the salon I was handed off to a gentleman who's name I didn't catch, while Sarah was still working on another customer. I didn't think much of it, I've been handed off before when I lived in Las Vegas and my hair came out just great, and I assumed Sarah wouldn't hand a new client off to just anyone. The gentleman I had seemed confused by what I wanted, despite the fact that I had brought in several pictures of what I wanted, and he kept using the word "disconnect" for the asymmetrical pixie I wanted, saying the back wouldn't meet the front and would have according to his finger length demonstration a few inches of difference, despite the fact that it clearly did and looked cohesive in the pictures I showed him. He seemed to understand after some explaining and proceeded to move on to the very short trimmed side pieces. He at first said they would need to be shaved, which off the bat worried me. So I brought up the pictures once again and pointed to the short but certainly not shaved pieces you could clearly see in more than one of the pictures. He said that would be a "3" on a razor and I, not being a hairstylist and assuming the hairstylist cutting my hair knew what he was talking about, agreed. He cut the pieces with a "3" and it looked a little shorter than the picture but still fine. Then he brought out a regular razor, the kind to shave men's beards and I got nervous, but he just started cleaning up my sideburn. That too was fine until he just kept on going up, shaving off my hair in the spot before I could even point out that that was exactly what we had discussed NOT doing. At this point my choice was to either walk out looking like a toddler had gone to town on one side of my head or try to figure out a way to change the style in words he could understand that left enough hair that I could go to a different salon to salvage it. So I explained that we could just do a regular asymmetrical bob with side bangs and leave it at that. He agreed and cut it as such while I sat getting steadily more nervous. We thankfully finally reached the end and my side-parted hair is hanging in my face like a curtain and he chooses THEN to tell me that the side-swept bangs that I wanted would be "disconnected" (that word popped up a lot this appt) from the rest of my hair, showing once again inches worth of difference between where it seemed he was going to chop off a blunt bang and where my bob ended. At this point I was visibly upset and finally Sarah, having finished her client and even with two waiting in the lobby, came over to see what had me so unhappy and explained that what I wanted was a simple layered bang. I agreed, thankful that she understood, and she explained this to him. He still seemed confused, and after some time of her trying to explain it to him, eventually she just sent him to do one of the waiting clients and took over my hair herself. I managed to escape a hacked haircut that had me crying in the mirror, but it's not remotely what I asked for and the journey to get to what little decency I have was nerve-wracking and awful, and I'll not be returning to give them a second chance. read more

I've been going to this Korean hair salon to get my haircut for a couple years now (back when it was also known as "Windy Hair Salon") but they've recently changed ownership in the last year or so. The main hair stylist (who is also the owner now) is awesome. She will keep me coming back here for my cuts. She's very sweet, asks to make sure she understands what you want, and does a great job making my hair look natural even right after trimming. Her price for a women's cut is $30 (plus tip, of course!) which isn't the cheapest around...but I think it's worth it to have somebody who knows how to cut Asian-American hair. You can call the day-of to make an appointment and she can probably fit you in or you can risk a short wait if you prefer to do a walk-in. read more

Got a great classic haircut here. I'm Asian mixed so my hair is black but very wavy. Walked in without an appointment right as they opened the door. Was seated immediately with the gentleman stylist. I showed him photos of the classic 1950's executive cut and he gave me exactly that. He said the style made me look like Al Pachino from The Godfather! Very cool guy! :) My gentleman stylist had great use of clippers, razor, and gentle sheer work. I could tell he had lots of experience cutting Asian hair. He took off a lot of hair as I have been growing it long for over a year now. I all but gave up on getting haircuts as I was so totally sick of receiving horrible haircuts from the Super-cut chain places. Scissors Sound is my new go-to place for cuts. I rarely went to salons to get my haircut as I always had a family member or a friend cut my hair. But as I got busier in my life I needed to find a place. I was looking for a Korean salon specifically as I had a longer hairstyle and my hair is korean. Some of my friends got their haircut here and didn't have bad things to say about it so I decided to check it out. After a year since my first visit, I've always left satisfied. Was kind of worried because I'm not very good at explaining what I want in a hair cut and I was never too picky. I didn't bring a picture of what I wanted either. I know this makes it harder for the person cutting my hair but Sarah knew what to do with my hair. It was a pleasant experience as it was quick and the service was friendly. She was easy to talk to even with my limited Korean. Knowing Korean will help you here but they speak English well here too. It's a little on the pricier end for a men's haircut which is $20, but I think it's worth it. read more

This is hands down my all-time favorite salon. And it's the only one I'll go to as long as I live in Austin, TX. The owner, Sarah, is incredibly sweet and a really talented stylist. I have very thick hair that tends to become wavy and a bit uncontrollable at times, so before I went to Scissor Sound I was never able to get a perfect bob. Every stylist who attempted just made my hair flip outwards. But once I got introduced to Sarah, I have never once looked back. I honestly don't know how Sarah does it, but every time I go to her, whether its for a sleek bob or delicate bangs, she has always impressed. It's like she waves a magic wand or sprinkles fairy dust into my hair. EVERY SINGLE bob she has cut for me has remained beautiful, tame, and nearly perfect. I honestly think it's sorcery sometimes--she's that good! And I always leave her shop feeling well taken care of and super happy. Not only is she really skilled, she goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable. I go to her periodically for touch-ups, and each time we end up having a great conversation about our families, jobs, etc. She's just awesome! And did I mention how reasonable her prices are? A bob costs about 20 dollars--which is kind of crazy to me considering that I have been to more "high end" salons that charge 3 times as much for a mediocre cut. Did a walk in on a Saturday morning knowing the risk of having to wait. Sarah was already working on a clients hair. She had mentioned that she's book for the day but can make an appointed, so I decided to wait until to choose a day time. But surprisingly, she was really nice to fit me in right after working on the clients hair dye. I didn't have a picture with me, I just explained what I wanted, shoulder length layered cut. She gave me options of layers. About 30 minutes later, I was very very pleased with my cut! She had cut off about 9 or 10 inches of hair and did a fantastic job! Sarah knows what she is doing. I'm very picky when it comes to hair salons because not a lot of places know how to cut asian hair. Her prices are reasonable, $30 for my cut. I have a head full of hispanic ringlets and when Windy saw my mane she didn't even flinch. I brought a picture of what I wanted and she made suggestions that I agreed with, She cut, colored and added some highlights( strategically placed btw...) and it turned out great I am happy with the results. I loooove this place! The lady, Wendy, is a total hair pro, just bring pictures and she'll do EXACTLY what you want. She's also very sweet and funny but not crazy talkative, which I thoroughly enjoy cause I hate small talk. There's always K-Pop playing in the background (LOVE IT) and she always gives me little Asian skincare samples. She's always been able to see me whether I make an appointment days in advance or call 3 hours ahead. I have long hair so my cuts are usually about 30 and I always leave a 10 tip, compared to paying 65+ like I did before the price is right for me. I used to avoid Korean haircut places when I was growing up - every haircut was a bowl cut. But as I grew older and American based Korean stylists figured out that there's more to life than bowl cuts, I converted to Korean places. I suppose it also helps that a haircut is much cheaper than American owned places (unless you go to Supercuts - which is about the same as me cutting my own hair blindfolded). Anyways, as for Scissors Sound (what's with the weird name?), I like it. I went on Saturday afternoon and found the place to be completely empty. Since it was my first time, it took longer for my haircut. The guy first cut it, then I had to have him go through with the clipper twice. But he was efficient and cut it the way I wanted it - despite some language barrier (my Korean is good enough to order food, not so much haircut). My haircut also included shampoo & wash. Total out the door - $20. I went back for 2nd time and it was a good again. This time was by a lady - I think she was the owner. I'm not overly picky about my haircut, but at same time, don't want it to look bad either. If you are a non Korean speaking Asian, my suggestion is for you to bring a picture of what you want. And if you're not Asian, don't be too surprised if you don't get the exact style you wanted because of communication issues and your hair not being Asian characteristic. For the price and quality, I'll keep going here. It's a bit out of the way, but I rather spend extra 10-15 minutes driving for a haircut I want, rather than being stuck with the one I don't like for a month. read more

Took my 7 year old (who is 1/8 Japanese) to get a hair cut as his hair is the typical Asian hair: thick,straight,black and tons of it. I showed the personable lady there some pictures of boy's cuts I thought they'd be perfect for my son, but she immediately disregard some of them, as some needed a lot of hair products to make them look good, and some were not my son's hair type, etc. She chose one so adecuate for my son's face, and she was so fast and precise with her scissors I was amazed. She is incredible. My son was totally happy to see his face in the mirror and my husband (who was totally skeptical about getting a hair cut over there) is now considering getting one for himself next time. I went in for a grey color touch up and a hair cut. Sarah was friendly, professional and great to work with. The salon itself is nice and overall a comfortable place to get a hair cut. This is the second time I have brought my 4 year old daughter here for a cut. As a Korean-rowned business, they "know" Asian hair and were expert in cutting my little one's thick straight hair. The stylist herself spoke no English, although the owner speaks a little bit. I chose this visit to bring a Korean friend who was able to help explain to the stylist the cut we wanted. Hands down my favorite hair salon in Austin. Wendy does such a fantastic job at cutting hair, especially Asian-type hair. I normally bring a picture of how I would like my hair to be cut and Wendy never ceases to amaze me. If you cannot speak Korean, it'll be difficult to communicate. I would suggest bringing a picture of how you'd like your hair to be cut and I promise you that Wendy will do it justice. The haircut is pretty pricey for my taste - usually comes down to $20 for me. With that said, I would much rather pay more to have my hair be cut correctly rather than pay less and get a butchered look. read more

Sarah is so talented, kind, and extremely attentive and is excellent at her job. I always walk away satisfied and I absolutely trust her with my hair. My boyfriend and I originally came here to get a pretty standard haircut for him, but after meeting with Yoonju, who despite what a lot of people say about a language barrier actually speaks English very well :), we were totally blown away with her recommendations and the cut she gave my boyfriend was perfect for his hair type. He has thick black Asian hair and it sticks out pretty straight, but Yoonju knew exactly what to do. She gave him a really cool faux hawk cut and it looked awesome! She was very personable and even gave me some tips and recommendations for my own hair, which is very similar to my boyfriend's straight black asian hair. I ended up getting a haircut and style too and it was equally as perfect and gave my hairstyle a lot more shape and volume. We will definitely be going here again =) read more
