The school (which has been open in Millburn for over ONE HUNDRED years) is still set in the original Victorian house on Taylor Street. There are only 2 classes--3's and 4's--so it is super small and intimate, and because of this, a very close-knit and friendly parent community. They have an amazing playground which backs up to the Millburn community garden. The school owns 3 large plots in the garden and they include it in the curriculum. So the kids get to plant seeds (which they also use for counting & math), watch & learn about the different stages of growth throughout the seasons (science/STEM), and best of all, harvest & eat the fruits & veggies they grow! The school is very tied in with the town, including field trips to the local fire station, the local farmers market (goes with the garden curriculum), and Paper Mill Playhouse. The head teachers and assistant teachers have all been there for 15-25 years I believe, which speaks volumes about the school. They are nurturing, kind, fun, and truly great at what they do. They also make good company at the school happy hours :) The other major selling point of the school for us was the flexible hours. Kids can attend half day, half day + lunch, or full day, anywhere from once a week to 5 days- you customize the schedule. I have never seen another school offer this. This year for the first time they also offered aftercare as yet another option. And of course they have summer camp too. Between my 2 kids we have attended 4 different schools/daycares in the area, including a similar Montessori school down the street, but Neighborhood House is our absolute favorite, hands down.

We have experienced three different directors in that time and each has been better than the last -- and the first was good! The staff are all friendly and the teachers my kids have had were all fantastic. Yes it is pricey. But I have never felt I was overpaying for what we get. Ivonne was warm, welcoming, professional and super knowledgable. She truly has a beautiful heart and its evident she loves children. I see her every day either upon my arrival or when I pick up Ethan, she is very hands on and always greats us with a smile. Ethan's teacher, Daiana is beyond amazing. She is so positive, uplifting and loving. Her interaction with the children is energetic and fun. On numerous occasions when picking my son up, he runs into her arms and does not want to leave :-) I always tell my husband I wish Daiana could remain his teacher till he goes to college :-). Ethan has only been at The Place for Learning for a few months and he is speaking so much more, in English, Spanish and sign language. I love his nature walks and movement classes. We have moved him to a new school now because we moved away from the area. The teachers are very caring. We have seen our son grow into an enthusiastic young boy in their care. The butterfly classroom curriculum and the extra curricular activities are very good. The place is very clean and their sick policy is quite strict which is a good thing. It is very important that you feel safe when you drop your kids at school and this school gives us that exact feeling that we don't need to worry about our kids when they are here. We really love this school.

I would say it is unfair to give a harsh review based on a first impression and on a place that is not suited to your personal preference. I wouldn't give a negative review for a steak restaurant just because I'm a vegetarian. That being said, my wife and I visited and researched several daycares in the area before selecting STREAM. We were rather judicious because our son was only 4 months at the time of enrollment and because we wanted him to have a good developmental experience but we weren't keen on putting too much pressure on him to get a "headstart". For example, we visited another daycare which was much larger in size and felt more like a school with desks and classrooms. That's not really what we were looking for. We wanted him to learn and grow and be guided but not be in a rigid environment focused on getting him ready for standardized testing. That is not to say that STREAM doesn't teach their students - their approach is very thoughtful and creative and allows the children to learn naturally, practically and at their own pace. Perhaps more than that is that we trust the staff and teachers there. We can really feel their care and concern and how much they love the children. They are in constant communication and they are devoted to the children. Our child has thrived in that environment and is always happy and excited to go there. We can't thank the staff their enough for the indispensable role they have played in caring for our child.

5 years ago we were new parents, so nervous as we had only ever left our baby with our parents. we…read moredropped him off at Little Genius Academy of Metuchen and I cried that first day getting pictures of him sleeping in the arms of the staff but so grateful for the care they gave him and knew we'd be ok and he was safe and cared for. In 5 years he learned to crawl, walk, eat solid foods, potty train, make friends, learned to talk, learned the alphabet and numbers and counting and math. He made friends and celebrated birthdays and holidays and played soccer, basketball and went on the fun bus, and played in the sprinkler, had pajama days and even a pre-k prom. We weathered the pandemic- thankful for a place that stayed open as parents who couldn't work from home. We moved, we dealt with biting and crying and croup and all the pink eye. And we did that all with the support, love, and genuine care from the staff at LGA. While we are sad to say goodbye we are so so so thankful and acknowledge the role all the staff have played in these important years of my son growing up. Thank you is not enough of a statement. Thank you for taking such good care of our boy and for helping us to be able to work knowing that he was somewhere safe, loved, and able to grow and learn.
