Turned out I wound up having to have meniscus repair on both knees and then a knee replacement. Arthritis? Oh my Dr. Smith. Really?

Terrible. I'd honestly give no stars if I could. He dismissed my pain because I'm young and literally told me that "my scoliosis pain is the same as someone with a normal spine" and "everyone has back and disc issues" and basically told me to take ibuprofen when my actual pain meds don't even work. A good surgeon, but a terrible doctor. To say arrogant is an understatement. He did a knee replacement on my wife and, as a board member of the hospital, seemed to care less about any issues with her care after the surgery. His office brags about the terrific knee and hip replament faclities and how they support patient recovery, yet does nothing or cares nothing about a patient who has problems with pain medication related to the surgery itself. When during healing of a knee replacement, a patient has problems with mobility and he only casually mentions an important possible solution, well after the window of time it could be effective. He then pushes a patient to use his physical therapy clinic and the patient gets put on a waiting list when they need PT immediatly. Other doctors are reluctant to respond on these issues but seem a bit startled when they hear about this. See this man with a God complex at your own risk. read more

My last experience with Dr. Scott Smith resulted in misdiagnosis and mistreatment without providing any physical examination, even after I specifically asked to see the doctor. His Physician's Assistant, Jerry Lopez, said the doctor would be in momentarily, but Dr. Smith never came in. I have good reason to believe Dr. Smith was listening outside the examination room door, purposely refusing to see me. No one in that office properly examined my left knee when I presented for pain which I had first experienced the previous day at work. As I was later advised by several physicians, a simple McMurray test would have indicated meniscal damage to the knee, not arthritis. Even so, Mr. Lopez arbitrarily treated me with a SynVisc injection, which is not an appropriate treatment for meniscal damage. Dr. Smith never bothered to say anything to me except to briefly quote a price for a knee replacement as I was leaving the office. My subsequent complaints to Texas Orhtopedics offices resulted in wagon circling behavior to protect this abhorrent, neglectful practice. There are plenty more details, of course, but suffice it to say I would never again consider seeing Dr. Smith or visiting Texas Orthopedics for treatment. read more

I wish I had checked Yelp first before going to Dr. Smith. I had the worst experience I've ever had with a doctor with him. It doesn't allow me to give negative stars, but I would if I could. I had been to him once before. The first appointment was good and he told me a bunch about my knee, gave me a cortisone shot, and drained my knee. He said to have a follow-up in 6 weeks to see how it was doing and what needed to be done to help me manage. At the first appointment, knee replacement was discussed as an inevitability. I am young, but he told me I have bad genetics and the goal was to delay knee replacement surgery. However, he said I will have to when the pain becomes too much. Fast forward to my most recent appointment. He came in 45 minutes late. I was already feeling trapped being in a small room with no word from any doctor for 45 minutes. I'd rather they leave me in the waiting room. When he came in, he said, "so, what are we doing today?" I told him that he told me to schedule a follow-up to see how my knee was doing and when I would have to have surgery. He asked how it was. I said it was slightly better, but I was still limited for someone my age. He then said that I didn't really have bad arthritis even though his notes and he himself said it the last visit. I also have it on record from 3 other orthopedic surgeons (I only went to Dr. Smith because he was closer). He said I wouldn't need one for 30 years. I told him I thought I would need sooner because it was hurting me just to walk. He then said I needed to be tougher and that my cancer treatment was nothing in comparison to a knee replacement surgery because I would have to be up and moving within 30 minutes. He told me that I wasn't fit (even though I am am competitive athlete). When I told him I was competitive, he asked me when the last time I was doing these things. Then, he said, well, you're no longer competitive. This is you now. He went on to tell me that I both needed to be more fit, but also adjust my goals to maybe just being able to walk 100 yards. He continued to give conflicting messages. When I started crying because he was trivializing my cancer treatments, he said that I "have anxiety and depression." I told him he wasn't qualified to make that diagnosis and that I don't have that. He said, well, I do because "when I'm [Dr. Smith] talking, I'm making you [me] anxious." This continued on for about 5 minutes. I eventually said that I didn't think we were the right fit for each other. He got up, yelled, and said "you're right about that! Let's go!" He stood up and walked out. I was sitting there crying and trying to find a tissue. He came back in, yelled, and said "Let's go!" I had to walk out with them staring at me as I cried. Humiliating. Embarrassing. Unprofessional. Harassment. I paid $50 for him to spend a few minutes with me and attack every ounce of my being. read more

I'd like to add that about 3 weeks after this visit, that was completely unnecessary according to Dr Smith (and the overboard treatment I'd been receiving) I ended up with invasive strep A that originated in the ankle I was having so much pain in. I ended up in septic shock, hospitalized for 12 days, four orthopedic surgeries on my foot, along with necrotizing soft tissue disease. Things happen, I get that. But I can't help but think, if he had maybe actually examined my ankle/foot and maybe had some follow up, this could've been spotted a little faster. And even if it wouldn't have helped, I still think he's the worst doctor I've ever spent my copay on. read more

I found several entries for a Scott A. Smith, M.D., so to clarify: I am reviewing the Dr. Smith who works at Texas Orthopedics, Sports & Rehabilitation Associates. He treated me for two injuries, a break and a fracture. In a nutshell: I can't praise him enough. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who needs an orthopedic doctor. Dr. Smith is a happy, friendly, open guy, very easy to talk to and joke with. I always got professional treatment. He was thorough in explaining everything to me--what injuries I had, what treatments were available, what the pros and cons were, and what was happening as my treatment progressed. I don't know much about biology/anatomy, but I understood the information he gave me. He's definitely not surgery-happy, which was one of my family's concerns in getting me treated. While I ended up needing surgery, we tried other options first. I never felt pressured into getting something I didn't need. Most importantly, he fixed me up as good as new. I've had no complications or problems. Don't be surprised when he comes to talk to you before surgery in fishing boots! (Apparently they're very comfortable.) read more

I had dislocated my shoulder and decided to go to TX Orthopedics and was assigned Dr. Smith. Don't go this guy, he maybe friendly etc. but I don't need a friend, I need a doctor giving his professional opinion about orthopedic issues. My diagnosis was "There's not much I can say, we need an MRI". What kind of diagnosis is this? He tested out my arm movement for less than 10 seconds and started selling the need for an MRI(the lab is located in his office, how convenient?). After this, he started his lame scare tactics about bone breakage, cartilage tear etc. He made sure I got an appointment scheduled at the desk. When I went back home I did my research and found out that there was no need for an MRI at this stage since I did not have any pain or fracture. This was just an attempt to extract extra money from me and my insurance. I cancelled my appointment subsequently. I would recommend going to Dr. Carolyn Hyde for any orthopedic issues, she is excellent. read more

I saw Dr. Scott Smith a week after a serious fall. Even though xrays from Round Rock Medical Center indicated no fractures, I was having increasing hip pain and difficulty walking. Dr. Smith's assistant Jerry was very helful but Dr. Smith was abrupt and dismissive. He did not ask where my pain was or what made it worse, in fact, he asked me nothing. He manner was abrupt to the point of rudeness. He said to take tylenol and I'd be fine in 4 weeks then left the room. Three weeks later I saw another orthopedic doctor who actually listened to me. He ordered an MRI which showed that I have three fractures in my pelvis. Dr. smith should not be seeing any patients at all. read more

I really should have paid more attention to the bad reviews written here. I fell on my knees on tile and wen to Dr. Smith in severe pain, knee swollen, patella pushed up and a huge dent under the patella. Based on X-rays only, he said I had no internal damage, there was nothing for him to do and I should go home and walk on it and exercise. Second opinion after my knee was searing in pain and I wasn't about to back to Smith. As soon as the new orthopedic dr, saw my knee, he knew something was really wrong. He showed me where the x-ray showed I had fluid in my knee and other things that indicated internal damage but he could not be sure until he did an MRI. He put me on a knee brace and told me not to put weight on that leg. MRI Showed: Torn meniscus, cartilage injury, bruised bones on front and both sides of my knees and cartilage floating in my knee. I am having knee surgery to alleviate some of the damage. The bruising is what was causing the excruciating pain when I put weight on that knee and why it got worse when I followed Smith's advice. Smith was fixated on hearing himself talk and not on listening. He insisted the dent under my patella was caused by the removal of patella tendon to fix my ACL, even after I told him they had used hamstring tendon not patella. He was adamant, saying the scar running up and down my knee was where they removed my patella tendon and that back then they were not using hamstring tendons. I had to point out the scars from the surgery before he stopped telling me I was wrong about my own leg. He never did answer why the dent was there, why my knee hurt so much, why my leg locked in place, why my knee popped and hurt when it popped. This is a long review. I'm sure some people's experience with Smith have been better and he has been able to help. I am glad about this because I would not want anybody to be treated the way I was. But if you are looking for a Dr, and having made up your mind yet, realize that your experience may be good, or it may be a devastating experience which will result in a misdiagnosis and an overall bad experience On the other hand, no pun intended, if it is a hand surgeon you need, Doctor Hardy is excellent in every way, same office, completely different doctor in every way read more

I was misdiagnosed and tried to correct it as soon as possible but the doctor refused to correct it until i filed a complaint .Then he corrects it. While playing competitive volleyball I developed a persistent pain on the top of my foot. I decided to visit Texas Orthopedics and meet with Dr. Smith because he specializes in sports medicine and he was the doctor for my high school's football team. He was able to examine my foot and determine I didn't need an x-ray which saved me a good amount of money. His decided treatment was to give me a cortisone shot for plantar fasciitis. After the shot my foot felt great and I was able to get back on the court the next day. Dr. Smith's diagnosis and treatment was spot on and his bedside manner couldn't have been better. If you are looking for a personable, trustworthy doctor or orthopedic surgeon in the Austin area I would definitely recommend Dr. Smith. read more

Wish I read reviews before I wasted my time seeing this doctor. Thanks for leaving a young healthy patient in pain doc and not properly examining them or ordering any scans to see if there are any issues. Yes I know how to do physical therapy exercises thank you for your explanation on how important those are. I'm actually in a tremendous amount of pain to where I can barely tolerate pouring a cup of coffee. I'm not a pill popper I don't want your muscle relaxers. I wanted a proper examine and possibly immediately relief so I can bounce back to my life faster than now waiting another week for physical therapy appointments. Complete waste of time. Asked me to life my arm up and says yup your fine! My doc in Florida properly examined me. Actually requested I get an MRI at the time which I denied because I was not on near as much pain then as I am now. He also injected my joint for immediate relief so I can actually live my life, sleep, take care of kids etc. now I'm just in pain and in tears waiting again hoping to find a doc who will take the time to look at me and actually treat me instead of just talking over what I say and telling me what I already know. read more

My scheduled office visit with Dr Smith was unlike anything I have ever experienced with a physician. I went in for hip and leg pain with difficulty walking and sleeping due to discomfort. He gave me a couple of minutes of his time in the hallway. Didn't ask a single question and didn't seem interested in anything I ask or said.I couldn't even get a good answer about what I could take and how much for pain... Aleve, Motrin, Tylenol. The diagnosis was arthritis in my hip based on the X-rays. Maybe he was having a bad day but so was I. The physician assistant was quite nice and my experience would have been more positive if I had only seen the assistant. 6 months after complete ACL replacement I began having serious pain and discomfort constantly. I was told everything was fine and it was arthritis. I insisted on a MRI which revealed a cyclops lesion. I was told it was small and not the cause of my pain. This being my 4th ACL replacement, I had a good idea what was normal pain and what wasn't. Went for a second opinion. Had an arthroscopic debridement procedure that removed the lesion and lots of debris. No sign of arthritis. The new surgeon could not believe I was able to even walk on it. He said the lesion was large and definitely impeding my recovery. The tunnels in my bones for the ACL graft were larger than he had ever seen. Dr. Smith and Jerry did not listen to me, did not care about my health or recovery, and did not take me seriously. So glad I found a new surgeon. read more

I saw Dr Smith for Shoulder and arm pain that had gotten so bad I was vomiting from the pain. He took an x-ray and then came in and told me I had tendinitis. He never examined me. He never looked at my range of motion or anything else and then told me I needed a shot which, with insurance, was going to cost more than $200.00. I told him I couldn't afford it. He told me to take over the counter Advil and walked out of the room - REALLY, do you think I hadn't already done that?? This man is cruel. I decided to schedule an appointment with Dr. Smith after rolling my ankle while playing pick up basketball at the gym. I was concerned I had broken it but didn't have great insurance to cover surgery if needed. After trying to tough it out for a few days my friend who was a nurse told me I was probably going to need an MRI to see if it was broken. I knew I had to get things checked out. It was my first time meeting with Dr. Smith, but he quickly won me over with his consultative approach. After examining my ankle he determined that my ankle wasn't broken and I didn't have to get an MRI! I was thrilled. He gave me the option to purchase a boot and crutches from his office and although they weren't cheap, I was so happy I didn't have to pay extra for x-rays or anything. I opted to get the boot but go without the crutches and he didn't push me at all. He's definitely not one of those salesy private practice doctors just looking to make a buck. My ankle healed up great and he has definitely won a patient for life if I ever have to see an Orthopedic Surgeon again (hopefully not!). If you are looking to take a conservative approach with treatment and save some cash I would definitely meet with Dr. Smith. read more
