He patiently guided me through the entire process, ensuring I was comfortable and informed. I also appreciated how he reviewed my X-rays with me and clearly explained his findings. Stay away from this man. He is a frustrated comedian who apparently would rather be doing comedy than surgery, but the damage he caused to my foot is no joke. Dr, Smith purported to repair my foot which had arthritis. He attempted to fix a slight hammer toe but instead he made it horribly pronounced instead. It is quite painful now where there was no pain there before the surgery. The hammer toe now overlaps my large toe. Further, my toes look like a Dr. Suess cartoon gone wrong. He shortened my little toe so much that for the first year after the surgery I was WALKING ON TOP OF IT. Orthotics have helped a little bit in keeping my toe from rolling UNDER my foot. An orthopedic surgeon I consulted later said the unsatisfactory result was likely caused by the original surgeon rushing through the job. The whole foot now looks deformed; before the surgery it looked like a normal foot. Dr. Smith does not appear to be a serious man. He also is a lousy comedian. Monterey Spine and Joint was taken over by Montage last year. I have heard nothing but complaints from long time MSJ patients since then. They also have extremely negative reviews on Nextdoor and other social media since the changeover occurred. Well I can confirm all the criticism is correct. I called to make an appointment with Dr Scott Smith, who is a podiatrist, after I was referred by my doctor. I couldn't get past the idiot who answered the phone. Tip #1: If you're going to have a medical office in Monterey the person answering the phone and doing the scheduling needs to speak fluent English. Broken English won't cut it. The person never provided his name, but he sounded Asian, and he had trouble speaking and understanding English. Tip #2: The person answering the phone needs to be familiar with what conditions the doctor treats. This guy had no idea what conditions Dr. Smith does and does not treat. He also had no idea how to make an appointment. After wasting 10 minutes of my time with this idiot, and getting absolutely nowhere, I finally hung up in frustration. All the criticism about the Montage takeover of MSJ is accurate. A lot of the good employees of Monterey Spine and Joint left, so now customers have to deal with the idiots from Montage, which has had a terrible reputation for many, many years. read more

I have suffered with bunions for 12 years. As an avid runner, I thought surgery would heal my condition, but the opposite has happened. I exist in a perpetual state of foot pain and am so disappointed. Dr. Scott Smith performed a horribly botched lapiplasty on me. I'm only 24 years old and although I was fully able bodied before the surgery- here we are, two years later, and I am no longer able to even stand up without pain for more than 5 minutes, let alone go for runs or exercise. My foot at the site of the surgery has remained swollen for 2 years. I am in constant pain and running hurts more than ever. Dr. Smith did not listen to what I wanted as a patient and refused to shave down my bunion, and he highly assured me he knew what he was doing. I questioned his strategy and he mansplained consistently that I "have no medical degree" so I don't know what I'm talking about as if I was not raised by two doctors..... I was dealing with pain right after the surgery. At my 6 month checkup Dr. Scott Smith brushed my perpetual swollen foot and pain off like it was nothing. Thanks to him, I have lost my ability to do my favorite activities. I've been advised by another doctor that I need to get the hardware removed! But my mom died and no one can take care of me if I get another surgery. He knew of my mom's condition and that I had no one else when I went under for surgery. I came to him three months after getting diagnosed (x-ray from CHOMP at beginning of March) with a badly sprained ankle (I really thought I had a broken bone) ...thinking he could take it to the next level of professional diagnosis. Instead, another x-ray and a shot of steroids..another month goes by..another xray and another shot of steroids..this time the whole bottom of my foot went numb. Usually, I'm good at advocating for myself...Not until September did I finally get an MRI. I called for results, as I was going on vacation...not till October did I get the results. I went in and then...he looked at the MRI for the FIRST time! "WHOA!! that's some big trauma!!!" The talus had become necrotic after being fractured for so long! Two years later and two surgeries at Stanford and I am forever changed. My tibia is now fused to my heel...never again to bend. From Drs and nurses at CHOMP to radiologists at Montage, to the physical therapist and people too numerous to count...I have heard nothing but negative experiences. Ask around before using this guy. Might be a great doctor, but I guess I'll never know. I called his office to attempt to make an appointment and the receptionist was curt and off-putting. I had called to ask a few questions before I decided if it was the right practice for me, but I never was given the chance. The first question the receptionist asked was my date of birth. Typically a medical receptionist asks this question to pull up an existing patient's info. So I politely explained that I would be a new patient, implying that I wouldn't be in their system, and then asked if they accepted my insurance. In an annoyed voice she said, "I need your date of birth so I can continue with the scheduling process." Ok, calm down over there. Before even considering scheduling an appointment I need to know if a practice accepts my insurance. I've never been asked my date of birth right out of the gate before even confirming that I was ready to proceed with scheduling. Her tone continued to be annoyed and completely done with me as she asked "what are you trying to be seen for?" At that point I just hung up. Let the patient lead the conversation. Let them ask any questions they may have before forcefully "proceeding with the scheduling process" and acting like I'm a total idiot for not knowing how you go about things in your particular office. Above all else, have some patience with people. That's part of your job. First impressions are everything. And in this case it wasn't a good one. I had been seeing Dr. Smith for a number of years prior to his joining Monterey Spine & Joint. Even when he and his dad had their own practice, the amount of time spent with me was very little. He'd come in the room, ask me what was new and i would explain the pain and discomfort that I was having. He did perform one procedure on my right foot (which to be honest, I have NEVER had any further problems with) and two on my left (a kidner procedure and a tarsal tunnel release). I was never told that the tarsal nerve could be compressed again over time and about 2 years later, i was again experiencing the same discomfort as before. i tried for several weeks to get into his office, leaving messages for the doctor to call, the staff to call with an appointment time. Not once did I receive any kind of acknowledgement to my calls. It was later blamed on the new staff. Now that he's at Monterey Spine & Joint, his time with patients is even shorter. I've been experiencing the same pain as before with the tarsal nerve being compressed. He ordered a nerve conduction test, which he said the problem was due to my back issue. NOT! My back issue has not been an issue for some time now. On my last visit (about a month ago), he told me that he was at a loss as to what was causing my discomfort and said that I needed to see another doctor. Today I had said appointment with another local podiatrist, who after a few minutes discussing my symptoms, said that he believed the tarsal nerve was compressed again and could possibly benefit from another release. This new podiatrist is waiting until the results of my nerve test next week before making his recommendation. In preparation for this appointment, i had asked for a copy of an MRI that I had believed was done on my LEFT foot. I went to Monterey Spine & Joint yesterday and had to wait for the CD. When i got home later on that day, i noticed that I had been given a copy of the MRI for my RIGHT foot!! The staff can't even take direction properly. The medical clerk should have told me that there was no record of an MRI for my LEFT foot in their files. I later found it in my files at Community Hospital! I don't recommend this doctor or the clinic he is now associated with. read more

I have had a foot issue for 10 months and had to wait 3 months to be referred here. My first time scheduling an appointment went well. Front desk was nice. Upon my first visit, Dr. Smith seemed nice and funny at first, but kept invading my privacy such as asking who was on my phone screen, who my guest was in the room with me, how we met, etc. all while the door was wide open and workers walked by, clearly violating my right to privacy. He kept ignoring my pain and discomfort issues by interrupting me or turning away and talking to his assistant about non-related and unprofessional gossip. My foot procedure was quick and topical but I was under the impression that it would be surgical. He said it was a non-invasive procedure so I guess I wanted to try bearing this pain one last time. He said no follow up was needed and left the room abruptly afterwards without asking me if I had any aftercare or general concerns! I had to then rely on his assistant's knowledge but she didn't have a clue and it just made my visit awkward. She just printed a copy of a small aftercare description which looked like it was poorly photocopied from a book. I never received an official letterhead from the facility with my patient/visit summary specifically stating "no follow-up." This has NEVER occurred to me! I called the office back because I had errands to do and personally felt that my procedure would fail after personally attempting different care and remedies for my foot issue. As mentioned, I have had this issue for so many months now, almost a year! And because the patient IS always right, I called to advocate for myself!!! The scheduler named Imani refused and denied after care. I was already feeling drained from my visit and now I couldn't even schedule another follow up for my well-being!? She kept talking very rudely over me and saying that she couldn't reschedule because she was following the doctor's order which was no follow-up. It's obvious that after you see a doctor you make a follow up. She could have at least brought this concern to the doctor, but as you can clearly see, she did not take initiative. Dr. Smith does not care, is always in a rush to go to the next patient (he must be on autopilot), and cares more about his image than patient satisfaction. At this point I no longer wanted to argue over no results and decided to give myself a few days to see how my procedure would heal. As I knew, a week went by and my foot was in more drastic pain! I left a voicemail with the office and the front desk said they would call back. Speaking of the devil, it was Imani. I clearly left in my voicemail that I was already uncomfortable where we left off and I no longer wanted to speak with her. She never apologized nor did she offer if I wanted to speak with someone else. She kept saying that she did not recall our conversation, but this was over the weekend and as for someone who works as a scheduler there should be some sort of way to make notes on the computer to make future accommodations are recorded and so that patients aren't always wasting their time repeating themselves. I was shaking over the phone trying not to break down to reschedule a 2nd follow-up and honestly at this point, I didn't want to hear anything else coming from her mouth. She was monotone and seemed indifferent to care about this appointment. I pushed through and was able to schedule my damn follow up, but now with a different doctor! I hope Monterey Spine and Joint read these reviews because it's very discouraging, discriminating, and demeaning to experience and witness the malpractice, unprofessionalism, and rude bed side care coming from "top practitioners in their field" as stated in their website. I personally have medical field experience and am not even close to treating anyone like this! Unacceptable service! Staff and doctors definitely need more training here. I also hope to see more people of color because I couldn't personally relate with staff nor were my needs and accommodations met. In all, I felt treated like a child. Majority of the patients are mid-older adults, and I felt that I was not respected nor treated appropriately and professionally. I am very disappointed, hurt, and no longer trust certain staff here. :( So far, I feel that after my 2nd follow up, I am no longer coming back unless I see changes, my concerns/accommodations are addressed, and accountability for these disrespectful actions by staff who are the face of the facility! read more

I have been going to Dr. Smith for three years now for my plantar factitious and heel pain. He gives me an injection and foot feels better for awhile. He listens to my concerns and told me next step is to get custom inserts. I'm happy with his help and nurse. The only negative thing I can say is that every time I wait at least 45 mins past my appointment time to be seen by doctor. So make sure to schedule your appointment with time to spare. But this makes me feel that the doctor is spending time to care for his patients appropriately. So it doesn't bother me much. read more

After ordering, reviewing my x-rays and seeing obvious fractures in my foot, my M.D. did everything he could to get me an appt. with an orthopedic specialist to treat the breaks. I wound up w/ an appt. with this podiatrist as the orthopedic physicians contacted either don't specialize in foot fractures or were booked. I would neither recommend nor return to this doctor. No introduction; no warmth. His pts. and he would benefit from his feeling and exhibiting a passion for his work and empathy and interest in the patients who come to him vulnerable and in pain. Shockingly, he neglected to take even a moment to examine or even LOOK at my discolored, very painfull and swollen foot - this even when I directly invited him to do so. This was a 1st for me in a doctor's office. He'd "seen the x-rays." To me, this failure to directly examine an injury, whether out of disinterest or his surety that there was no need to examine it based on his confidence in his read of the x-rays (a first for me in a doctor's office) to me fell short of Standard of Care. He did accomodate me by showing me the x-rays, when I asked. I asked whether surgery was necessary (hoping it's not). After telling me I could wind up with problems w/o it, there was no further information forthcoming. While he correctly told his Medical Assistant to bring me an orthopedic boot to stabilize my foot, there was no follow-through nor mention of crutches or a wheelchair - things I obviously need in order to get around. "We don't have these here." (Huh? If ever there was a place to have medical equipment, this seemed to be the place). I had to push for them to be ordered, explaining that my putting any weight whatsoever on my foot (whether in or out of the boot) was and is agonizing. I was surprised when he told me I could put my full weight on the booted foot. I use the word "surprisingly" as now, over a week after this visit, each time I've followed through on his advice I've wound up in agonizing pain that lasts hours. There was no discussion/education of what I could expect in terms of healing time. There was no mention of a follow up appt. to check the status of my injury (2 broken bones!).. He spent little actual time with me as he was in and out of the room concurrently treating another patient in the examining room next to mine (loudly) Positive: His A+ Medical Assistant, Yoana, Notably, she was attentive and caring. Most especially, she took the time and care to very gently place my fractured foot into the orthopedic boot. I greatly appreciated her empathy, kindness, competence and skill. Negative: Dr. Smith: No exam, no education even basic care of my newly fractured foot -- Ice? Heat? Elevation? Can I give my foot a rest from the boot? When can I drive? Course of healing? Follow up? -- all this necessary info was missing I'd brought a pair of old crutches with me. There was no lesson on how to safely use them to avoid more falls. I particularly missed this instruction when I, w/o any sign of help whatsoever, unsafely wobbled on them to the taxi from the building; Thankfully, I was caught by the taxi dver when I fell backward while trying to make it into my house. I fell twice more that evening. I'm thankful that my wonderful physician followed up with me by phone later that night. Thanks to his attentive and thorough care, I was relieved to have the opportunity to have many of my concerns and questions answered. A week later, still in agony, I made an appt. with Anne Marangoni, DPM. She thoroughly gently examed my foot and examined the x-rays. Dr. Marangoni spent a lot of time with me explaining the nature of my injury, showing me charts and drawing on paper. She taught me to UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES PUT WEIGHT ON THE BOOTED FOOT FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER WEEK, and then only on the heel. She had me take notes to refer to later as needed. I also learned how to ice (and for how long) along the artery to increase blood flow for healing. She gave me detailed instructions on what physical therapy to do in a week or two - depending on the swelling. And, she WRAPPED the foot in an ace bandage to stabilize it in the boot, showing me exactly the amount of tension needed and directing me to use the color of my toes as feedback (blue = restricted blood flow; pink = correct). I also learned from her to take Cal Mag D and why. I was instructed to keep my foot elevated above heart level - how and why. Follow up plans were made. I will never return to or recommend Dr. Smith. The care I received from the two doctors was like night and day. It's good to be in the light now, safe and on the right path to healing. Dr. Rona Halpern read more

If I could give this man ZERO stars, I would. I'll start by saying that his staff were always excellent and attentive, they always got us an appointment quickly if not that very same day, although the waiting room times were very long. Dr. Smith, on the other hand, seemed like he was more interested in telling jokes than taking care of my daughters foot pain. When he wasn't telling jokes he was busy talking to his scribe about whatever else was happening in the office. Anyways, We started out with a boot, then a cast, all the while he never told her to go non weight bearing or use crutches. She stopped all sports, only walked when absolutely necessary at school, etc. Her pain continued to increase and I felt like he was not listening to us or her, at all. We came in the last time due to increased pain in the cast and he just cut it off.. No explanation, he actually had the nerve to tell me that, "kids just don't like having them on". NO. She just wants to not hurt and go back to her normal life, not once did he explain why it was hurting or what else she could do about it. Just told us to return in a week to schedule an MRI. Well, that didn't happen. We took her to our podiatrist, Dr. Marangoni (I noticed another reviewer did the same) whom spent the time fully checking her foot, and explaining how to ice, wrap, exercise her foot not only to us, but to my daughter. I finally feel now like we are getting somewhere!! To end this review, I must say that I probably wouldn't have ever reviewed him if it weren't for what I received today. I got all copies of her records from his office for my insurance. This man LIED about what he told us, LIED about her pain. He said she continued to be in pain due to her increase in activity. I've never been more livid in my life. He said he recommended crutches and shoes with supports and explained all of this to us. That NEVER happened! I'm absolutely appalled. Last summer I returned to Scott Smith to have my second bunionectomy (is that even a word?) and I am so pleased to once again have matching feet and to wear my favorite shoes and sandals!
