After a few minutes I was told that I can't open a checking account and they would need to have the corporate office look into it. I asked why is that. The banker simply said he doesn't know. I've been banking with Sherman at West Portal for several years now, and recently I had some issues transferring my Roth IRA accounts -- it involved a lot of attention and meetings between Sherman and myself, and once even a three-way call with another institution -- I really appreciate how Sherman was focused and available to help me throughout a span of two months or so. Sterling doesn't appear to have as many modern conveniences as the bigger banks, but the upside of this is that Sherman was nearly always available right away by phone for me during business hours (excluding lunch), he prioritized the deadline-sensitive tasks he needed to perform for me, and that he always followed up as needed. I really appreciated Sherman's availability, competence and customer-service focus. If you need to do banking that involves a bit of paperwork, it may be best to schedule an appointment ahead of time (morning seemed better), so that he can focus on your work -- it appears the branch has a total of two employees, Sherman and Christy. I've been to a couple of the other Sterling branches (Taraval and Westlake), and I've found the service here at West Portal to be much superior.

There was no one in front of me except for a new client who wished to open an a IRA account & rollover her 401K from Citibank. This is the type of transaction that the greeter should've been able to hand off to someone else. Instead, she spent an insane amount of time helping this one client herself. After much back and forth, the greeter grabbed a laptop, set the woman down at a communal desk in the lobby, and stood next to the her to help her open the new account on the computer. She abandoned her station and completely ignored everyone waiting in line. At this point the line is already quite lengthy (about 4-5 clients, which is a long line for a normally quiet branch). Finally, a FC named Alvin came out of his office and helped me. Last time I visited the branch, I dropped off an LOA to gift some shares to a non-profit, except the wrong lot was journaled. Had I not catch the mistake, it would've cost me thousands in additional taxes. Nothing about Schwab is ever smooth or pleasant. And the fact that a client opens a new account in the lobby with zero privacy is very disturbing. I would have taken my account elsewhere a long time ago if I am not handcuffed by my employer (my 401k plan is unfortunately at Schwab).
