But instead what I found, Was a park fit for fairies! The area was once privately owned. But they've donated the land. The well kept grounds, I'd describe, As nothing less than grand! There's many paths to wander, And little gardens to see. There's even a makeshift playground Made from the trunks of trees! Such an adorable little park, In the middle of the city. Atlanta isn't the same as I remember, It's actually quite pretty!

The gardens are in beautiful, stone, raised beds and are rented yearly by community members. Community members tend to their own gardens, as well as the common spaces throughout the year. A number of events are held in the garden for the community, including cooking demonstrations (using the garden's cleaning station, grill, and green egg), gardening lessons, and celebrations. The garden includes a children's garden, where kids can enjoy digging in the dirt, too. This is a beautiful spot for frequent visits, as the gardens frequently change throughout the year.

I recently went for my nieces third…read morebirthday, but this visit they only let us stay in a few minutes because they had a camp coming. No notice until we got to the butterfly house, and truthfully it would have been nice to have been told that when we paid so we could have planned out our day better. They told us ten minutes, but their talk they do at the beginning took half of that so we felt pretty rushed. Other animal exhibits include a couple of owls, a beaver, and some vultures. Indoor exhibits were also limited, but at least it was air conditioned. I would not recommend visiting in summer months. Trail is fairly shady, but still brutally hot already. Overall, the exhibit is great and perfect for kiddos.

The layout is fun and the park itself is beautiful, especially in the winter when the leaves are thin and you can actually see the baskets through the trees. That said, the course could really benefit from clearer signage. Several pads weren't well marked, and we even had to skip a hole because we couldn't figure out where it started or ended. Since we only had time to play about half the course, we found ourselves spending more minutes navigating than throwing. I can't imagine how tough it must be in the summer when everything is fully leafed out -- it's probably like searching for a needle in a haystack. Still, it's a solid course in a great park, and with better markings it could easily be a five‑star experience.

I had no idea this was an annual thing and am happy that the city of Dunwoody does this and am definitely looking forward to next year's lights. While there were a ton of people, there was plenty of parking and I appreciated that there was an officer there to keep the flow of cars moving along. The park itself had several playgrounds and I loved they were padded. The kids had a blast on slides, swings and running around in the wide open space. The bathrooms were clean which always makes things even better. The kids had a blast playing with all the other kids and this is definitely a playground I'd come back to visit.

Bear Creek Nature Center is a hidden gem in Chattahoochee Hills, GA. This is a small animal refuge…read more/ hiking location (with a waterfall nearby) / and conservation center. This non-profit organization is home to numerous reptiles, amphibians, and birds. They even have the only live bats at a nature center in all of Georgia. Admission is $5 per car/driver and $3 for each additional person in your group. This is a great spot for families. They even let my kids pet any small animal in the facility of their choosing. We were given a personal tour of the place and the hike was good for all members of the group. Since not too many people know about this place yet, there was no issue parking. The staff were friendly as well. You can also follow the latest updates of their animals on their FB page. I hope to go back again soon.

The Bad thing that makes me grade this park so low: My kids now call it the Stranger Danger Park…read more The lack of police presence worries me. This is a big park that is busy with all ages. When we arrived there was a red van with all the window shades red with an old grey haired man driving. He park 4 space across from us facing the playground. I noticed another man just sitting on one of the benches nicely dressed on his phone right by the playground watching the kids play. The man sitting got up after he noticed I saws starring at him, we went to a blacked out Audi that was facing the playground. He sat in his car, watching the playground and talking on his phone. The gentleman in the red van at that time backed out of his parking spot that he was in and moved to the opposite side of the parking lot. He was not facing the playground, but I noticed he was watching his rearview mirrors. I notified my brother who was with us and he went by the red van in the gentleman, and the van followed him. The gentleman and the black out, Audi backed out and left the park . The gentleman in the red van then moved to another parking spot between two vehicles face the playground again. My brother and I decided to leave with the kids. after we got the kids in the car seats my brother went to inform parents on the play about what we have been watching. The mother with 3 young girls had my brother walk with her to her vehicle that was two spaces from the red van. I watched the man in the red van watching me and others in the playground. When my brother got in the vehicle to leave the red van moved again. This time he got out the van walked around to the passenger side and opened the sliding door. As he was getting back in his drivers seat he starred us down. I decided to go to the restroom s and call the police. As I was on the phone and lady over heard me talking to the 911 operator, she stop and questioned me. She got worried because the red van was parked next to her vehicle and she had two kids. My brother offered to bring her and the kids to her vehicle, but the kids were still at practice. We decided to move closer to the gates so we could watch for the police and watch to see if the van lift the park. As we were sitting in the vehicle waiting on the police we noticed the man in the Audi was back in the park. We waited for 32 minutes and decided to just leave the kid were not feeling to good, the heat and spinning. I don't know what happened after we left, never received a call back from the police. I did see the lady waiting for her kids was telling all the parents around her and entering the park. She was not getting in her vehicle until the police arrived. The Good: The kids loved the playground and all they could play on. We even got some National Geographic Books for kids.

Excellent little hidden nature preserve in the heart of Kirkwood. And it is definitely hidden,…read moreexcept from Google Maps and Atlanta magazine, which has an article on city parks. Following the street address will lead you to a short dead end road (Dixie). From here, the preserve is accessed at the very end and is unmarked until you get close, where you'll see a wildlife sanctuary sign as well as the standard Atlanta city park rules sign. There is limited parking here. However, the preserve can be accessed from several other streets and one large parking lot located behind the Dekalb Human Services Complex at the SW intersection of Warren St. and Hosea Williams Dr. Look for the parking lot access road off the one-way street coming from Warren St. It's behind the Dekalb Community Services Kirkwood Center building. That parking lot accesses a trail into a separate section of the preserve. The trail connects to the main property. You can also access the preserve at a number of trail points on various streets surrounding the preserve but you'll have to park on the street. Google maps is a pretty accurate guide. I'd go for the parking lot or Dixie St. Now that you're on the property, you'll find a community garden, a picnic area and a bunch of interconnected trails that go off into the property. The garden and picnic area are located near the Dixie St entrance. There's not much else here except walking paths, tree, mosquitoes and unfortunately, still a lot of garbage (I understand the garbage situation is getting better through efforts by the city and community). The trails are a nice walk but I think it might be better during colder months when it isn't so muggy and the bugs aren't so plentiful. Mind you, it rained heavily the day before I came here, so that didn't help.

So SHHHHHHHH, keep this a secret mmmkay…read moreyelpers? :) I recently discovered Kirkwood Urban Forest and Community Garden, and couldn't believe this tiny green oasis existed hidden just a short walk from my house! What Kirkwood has done with this property, transforming a once nasty dumping ground into a tiny secret garden and lovely forest with trails and a creek is nothing short of miraculous. There is a raised garden with labels on all the plants, a frog pond, and then the park descends onto thick woods with trails and wood swings and mulch paths. At the top of the hill is a small but adequate grassy field, perfect for tossing a ball with the fido. The only thing that I did not enjoy, is the home directly in front of the garden has several large dogs that are kept in a very small pen, who bark their heads off at anyone or anything. I feel really bad for them, to be penned up like that. And I think it may keep dog lovers a little cautious, since it does seem to upset my beasts. . .but then wind seems to upset my beasts, so I can't really get too judgy. I only ask that users pick up after your dog. Leaving a steaming pile in the middle of the trail is not cool!

We often will stop here while walking through Oakhurst as it is such a peaceful environment. I love to browse the individual garden plots to see what's growing, or find a seat under a shade tree for a few. I also love to see neighborhood kids learning about the basics of gardening in such a pleasant environment - signs are posted with info on getting involved. Check it out and support if you are able.

Check out the outside library. Look at the new plants. They play in the sandbox and in the "playhouse" And stay far away from the bees. It's a magical place - that brings serenity and harmony. A simple community that feels like the way that life should be.
