It's open to the public but please only look and don't pick the flowers or vegetables that the gardeners work so hard to grow. It's located behind the playground at the Decatur Rec Center and immediately next to the tennis courts behind the building as well. If you need a small slice of nature amidst the hustle and bustle of an urban center, then you'll be rewarded by beautiful flowers, vegetables, and other plants to sooth your inner soul. Each plot is rented by a different person, so there's quite a variety of plants to check out. It's quite an education to learn more about how veggies are grown. Just ask a gardener if you see one tending to their plot! If you're interested in renting a plot, then walk into the Decatur Rec Center and ask the front desk for details! The garden is open all year but the winter is when many people let their plots rest before the early spring time starts in March for the new round of more robust plantings.

You came here to see Big Lou the Emu, see overgrown vegetable gardens, see lots of communal homes, giant bubble sticks, and feel flashbacks of going to the 80's. It feels like you stepped into some liberal city like Seattle- look forward to blue hairs, hipsters, indie spirits, elephant pants, dread locks, beards, vintage bikes, etc. Location- This place is located randomly at the end of a cul de sac in Lake Clare Community a among streets named after states like NY and Arizona. It is next to a community house and then the entrance is literally wooden signs calling this place a Land trust. I've never heard of a land trust but the theory is that a group of individuals (probs hippies from he 1970's) left a piece of land for the community to play, have meetings, to grow in, garden- but it's not some community garden either with tame gardens, etc. It is essentially a giant piece of land with playground hints, peace signs, a random sauna??, pond with peace loving turtles, a random emu, and still growing in its offers. Definitely feels very different from other parts of Atlanta (Ansley Park, Chastain, Avondale, Old Fourth Ward, Cabbage Town, etc). Things to look for 1. Big Lou the Emu- that's right- there is this giant bird that is dinosaur like who is about 20 years old roaming around this place- behind a chain linked fence of course but you definitely should see this guy with his large blue ear holes, gray blue black plumage, fierce beak, and even more fearsome claws that you can't help wonder if you'd an outrun this beast. Guarded by 2 Mallard males and a pit bull like dog 2. The Peace Pond- that's right- imagine a pond slightly untame and over grown with turtles that actually swim towards you rather than away from you (unlike other turtles I've seen)- peaceful turtles I gues 3. The overlook facing Atlanta- you get to see a hint of the skyline of Atlanta from the highest point of this place- there are these super high chairs wooden weathered but comfortable to sit there and drink a coffee and read a book. 4. The amphitheater- Apparently there's a drum night that happens a few times a week- has a very pow wow kind of feel 5. The Olympic shed- apparently this place housed Olympic athletes from the olympics in the 90's - not sure where they stayed.. maybe this was for those who were in for the hippie kinds! 6. We didn't get a chance to see the my but the trails that lead to ponds and a lookout spot were awesome. The chickens and gardeners there were also friendly. There weren't too many people there so it'd be an ideal place to have a private picnic by the pond or wander through trails throughout the afternoon. It's a lot bigger than I remember when I went years ago. What a great find!

Excellent little hidden nature preserve in the heart of Kirkwood. And it is definitely hidden,…read moreexcept from Google Maps and Atlanta magazine, which has an article on city parks. Following the street address will lead you to a short dead end road (Dixie). From here, the preserve is accessed at the very end and is unmarked until you get close, where you'll see a wildlife sanctuary sign as well as the standard Atlanta city park rules sign. There is limited parking here. However, the preserve can be accessed from several other streets and one large parking lot located behind the Dekalb Human Services Complex at the SW intersection of Warren St. and Hosea Williams Dr. Look for the parking lot access road off the one-way street coming from Warren St. It's behind the Dekalb Community Services Kirkwood Center building. That parking lot accesses a trail into a separate section of the preserve. The trail connects to the main property. You can also access the preserve at a number of trail points on various streets surrounding the preserve but you'll have to park on the street. Google maps is a pretty accurate guide. I'd go for the parking lot or Dixie St. Now that you're on the property, you'll find a community garden, a picnic area and a bunch of interconnected trails that go off into the property. The garden and picnic area are located near the Dixie St entrance. There's not much else here except walking paths, tree, mosquitoes and unfortunately, still a lot of garbage (I understand the garbage situation is getting better through efforts by the city and community). The trails are a nice walk but I think it might be better during colder months when it isn't so muggy and the bugs aren't so plentiful. Mind you, it rained heavily the day before I came here, so that didn't help.

What Kirkwood has done with this property, transforming a once nasty dumping ground into a tiny secret garden and lovely forest with trails and a creek is nothing short of miraculous. There is a raised garden with labels on all the plants, a frog pond, and then the park descends onto thick woods with trails and wood swings and mulch paths. At the top of the hill is a small but adequate grassy field, perfect for tossing a ball with the fido. The only thing that I did not enjoy, is the home directly in front of the garden has several large dogs that are kept in a very small pen, who bark their heads off at anyone or anything. I feel really bad for them, to be penned up like that. And I think it may keep dog lovers a little cautious, since it does seem to upset my beasts. . .but then wind seems to upset my beasts, so I can't really get too judgy. I only ask that users pick up after your dog. Leaving a steaming pile in the middle of the trail is not cool!

If you love flowers and plants but can kill one just by looking in its direction *raises hand in…read moreshame* the Metro Atlanta Urban Farm (MAUF) can give you a greener tomorrow. They've been turning brown thumbs green since 2009 at their operation in College Park on the MARTA line between the East Point and College Park stations. I'd passed by before without paying attention but I wish I'd known about them before today's MLK Day service project. During our orientation, Mr. Wilson explained that they teach people in the community how to grow their own food. Adults and children can get hands-on experience at MAUF that they can use to cultivate organic gardens of their own. They learn which vegetables to plant in each season and how to nourish the soil. They also get information about cooking and preserving/canning their produce. MAUF is focused on self-sufficiency and farming of high quality produce. Everything they grow is non-GMO and is free of hormones, synthetic pesticides and fertilizer and the majority of what they plant are heirloom seeds. They have a well onsite and they're in the process of going off the grid with solar power. They sell fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables to the public, including to several of the restaurants in the area. Low-income EBT and food stamp recipients can buy $20 worth of produce for $10 through their 2-for-1 discount program. I encourage everyone to support this organization's work to educate people in the Atlanta community and help them eat nutritiously. Today we pulled weeds inside the hoop houses, tended the compost pile and stained tables in furtherance of their mission. I plan to return (when it warms up) to learn how to grow some of my favorite veggies at home! The garden includes a children's garden, where kids can enjoy digging in the dirt, too. This is a beautiful spot for frequent visits, as the gardens frequently change throughout the year.

TLDR: I would not hire this company. Not only am I very disappointed with the diagnosis process and…read morethe repair that did not address the issue that I called them for but also with the failure of their management to address my concerns. I called Plumbing Express to investigate and resolve a water leak in my kitchen ceiling. The leak was directly below my master bathroom toilet, which my sister and I had already narrowed down by tapping on the kitchen ceiling downstairs while listening upstairs, where the sound was clearly strongest near the master bathroom toilet. The technician briefly inspected both bathrooms but focused on my sister's bathroom on the opposite side of the house after noticing a damp sponge under the toilet tank. My sister explained the sponge was there because she sprays and cleans the toilet regularly, not because of a leak. The plumber then cut open the kitchen ceiling drywall, stated the leak was coming from the water supply line from my sister's toilet, and performed a complete toilet tank rebuild for $450. After the repair, he gave me a card for a company that performs restorations and recommended I call them to inspect for subfloor damage. When that restoration company arrived, they immediately stated there was no way the ceiling leak could have originated from the secondary bathroom because of the location and no evidence of water stains. They recommended another plumber and a leak detection company come out to find the leak before they performed any work. I contacted a second plumber, who agreed the leak was much more likely connected to the master bathroom toilet directly above the leak area. Finally, I hired a leak detection company, and they also confirmed the leak aligned with the master bathroom location, not the secondary bathroom Plumbing Express repaired. At this point, three separate professionals have stated the leak could not have originated from the bathroom Plumbing Express serviced. I paid $450 for a repair that did not address the actual problem I originally called about. In Response to Ty G: Your response is totally incorrect. I would not have called the second plumber and the leak detection company if your recommended restoration company had not told me that the leak was not identified. The pictures taken are of the secondary bathroom not the master as we discussed in our phone call. It is totally "disingenuous" for you to now state that the master toilet was the issue. This validates everything I thought about your company. Others beware!

We visited the Carter Center on Jan 6, 2026 as part of Road Scholar's "The Civil Rights Movement -…read moreAtlanta, Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham" program. It is the home of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. Access to the library is by appointment only. Tickets to the museum were covered by our program. Upon entering the Carter Center, the first thing we did was lunch at the Kitchen at Copenhill cafe. The cuisine was all-American, and decent enough. By the time I began exploring the museum proper, we had 100 minutes to spare. The way to the museum was into the gift shop, and then through either auditoriums A or B. The Carter Center is (so far) the only museum I've been to where the gift shop comes before the galleries. Given the limited time, I got to see three of the gallery sections. The first gallery section, aptly named "The Man From Plains", covers Carter's years before becoming POTUS. Exhibits cover his relationships with various people ("Black And White"), farming background ("Farm Family"), small-town education ("A Plains Education"), naval career ("A Career Officer?"), religious upbringing ("A Man Of Faith"), and courtship and marriage ("Jimmy And Rosalyn"). Easily my favorite section of the galleries, I got to appreciate (profoundly) Carter the person, human being and humanitarian. (Footages of this section are found on my YouTube channel in playlist "2026-1: The Civil Rights Movement - Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham", titled "Day 3: Jimmy Carter Museum, Part 1 - The Man From Plains".) The next gallery section is my least favorite, and not just because Carter wasn't all that great a POTUS. It covers the 1976 presidential election and his only term of office from 1977 to 1981. Exhibits include "The '76 Campaign", "The Walk Down Pennsylvania Avenue", "Inaugural Celebration" (including the Bible used in the swearing-in ceremony), the Oval Office (during the Carter administration), "Camp David Accords", and "Final Year - Two White Houses". No surprise that the focus is on the achievements than the failures. As photos the posted by others on Google show, there is apparently more that I didn't see because I wasn't aware of them. Wish I had a map of the museum. The final gallery section is my second favorite. It covers Carter's humanitarian work post-presidency, and is wonderfully illustrated by exhibits "Nineteen Eighties... Nineteen Nineties... Two Thousand and Beyond", "Building Hope", "Renewing Spirits", "Waging Peace" and "Recognition from Home and Abroad". The latter displays numerous accolades including a Grammy award, a Gates award, a Nobel Peace Prize, and (with Rosalynn) two Presidential Medals of Freedom. Situated near a window is the presidential lectern (supposedly) from the Carter administration where visitors can take photos of and with it. I took three of myself standing in front it. There is more that I didn't see because I wanted to go to the koi pond, but time had ran out. (Footages of the last two sections are found in "Day 3: Jimmy Carter Museum, Part 2 - Presidency & Post-Presidency". Same channel and playlist.) If I had more time, I would see the rest of the museum's content, the koi pond, the Japanese garden, and the Jimmy Carter bust near the museum entrance. What I did see impressed me so much that I'm adding presidential museums as places of interest for future travels. I recommend spending at least half a day to appreciate the museum and grounds of the Carter Center.

It's a nice museum and $12 as regular admission for adults seem reasonable. There's also a walking trail part of the Carter Center than you can enjoy. My fave part here was the replica of Jimmy Carter's Oval Office. Since it was a holiday today, they even had free cupcakes for everyone.

I've never been to the park, however I've heard it was beautiful. Anyway, I wasn't very interested in exploring the length of the park with a toddler simply to reach the splash pad, so I called the number on the park's website and left a message requesting a call back. I honestly didn't expect to hear back from anyone, but to my surprise I received a return call within a few minutes from Betty, a volunteer with Park Pride. Well, Miss Betty was just about the friendliest person I 've ever spoken to over the phone. She sounded like she was auditioning to be Mary Poppins. Nothing but rainbows and sunshine from Miss Betty. Not only did Betty provide me with some great information about the park, but she also renewed my faith in the City of Atlanta. Now if only the NON volunteers were as sweet and kind as Miss Betty! Miss Betty also gave me her direct phone number in case I have any questions in the future! Who does that!?!? Miss Betty does! Park Pride and the City of Atlanta have a real winner with Betty!

Park Pride awards grants each year in a worthy cause of helping those parks either add equipment,…read morespruce up the area or add a new attraction(s). However, if you review their grant application there is no where on the application that requires community participation. Dearborn Park in DeKalb County through Friends of Dearborn Park (Facebook Page) and DeKalb County Resource Management Coordinator Revonda Moody, were awarded a grant when only one person signed off on it. No one else in the Midway Woods neighborhood was told about it. What was given was a good thing, but I would think that something funded by Home Depot Foundation would have better checks and balances. One of their driving themes is to court neighborhood participation and input, yet when a park is awarded a grant, Park Prides only requires the signature of a neighborhood association officer or Friends of Park officer signature. In the hands of the wrong person you get something in the park that only that person wanted and by the time it is installed it would be too late to stop. When I called Allison Barnett, Associate Director she had a very condescending tone and basically said we don't care about your concern and she wouldn't show me proof where someone in our neighborhood signed off on it. Betty Hanacek Interim Executive Director wouldn't return my calls or e-mails. Home Depot Foundation didn't return my calls or e-mails, however, shortly after they received my call, Park Pride's Allison Barnett called me so my assumption is that they said "deal with this." Maybe that is why Ms. Barnett, was so rude and condescending. In addition, they co-sponsored an event held directly across from my home, Park Renewal Day, where initially 150 people, where to show up a 7AM and work all day. After we pitched a fit and threatened Renewal Construction and Dave Butler and Susan L. However, Park Pride did not participate in the negotiations and I found that very disheartening. Everyone that particpaticed in this event were from other areas of the city. The one group from area where all members of the Midway Woods Neighborhood Association who before the event never used the area and afterwards never used the area. Park Pride has done a lot for the parks in Atlanta and somewhat DeKalb, however, they lose 2 stars for not doing a very good job involving entire communities.

The structure is brown with a shingle roof, though it could use a little care. One of the shingles is missing and the front door panel is gone, leaving the books inside exposed to wind and rain. It is still standing and still serving its purpose, but it feels a bit forgotten. Inside, the shelves hold a colorful mix of mostly paperbacks. Today, the selection leaned heavily toward romance novels. That is not my usual pick, but it might be just right for someone else passing through. The books were dry for now, but without a door, that may not last. There is no listing for this library on the Little Free Library database map and no visible signage to indicate who maintains it or whether any group sponsors it. Atlanta History Center, Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park detail the history the city has witnessed. You can also enjoy the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola. There seems to be something for everyone. Atlanta is one of the big cities in the US that should be visited. This is my second year volunteering for Everybody Wins, and I know it won't be my last. I…read moreparticipate in their "Power Lunch" program, which pairs students who are at-risk for academic failure with volunteers from businesses and organizations to read together one-on-on each week during the school year. This is the perfect regular volunteer program for me, because one of the schools they operate this program out of (Cook Elementary) is just a mile from my office in downtown Atlanta. You read to your student during their lunch, so even though it's during the work day, I can easily make it there and back during my own one hour lunch break. Even better, if you can't make a weekly 30 minute commitment, you can rotate with another coworker, who can also cover for you if something comes up and you can't make your commitment. I have found the relationship with both of the mentees I've had to be very rewarding, and Everybody Wins runs a very good program that provides great support to the volunteers. I highly encourage you to check their website to see if they run a Power Lunch program near your workplace.

Westview Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery. My grandparents…read moreare buried there. I haven't been to the cemetery since my grandmother died in the early 1990's. I wasn't sure where her marker was. I called and the woman I talked to was very nice. She told me the section to look in. I went to the cemetery to look and couldn't find the markers for my grandparents. Thank goodness the office was still open. I went in and a very nice man helped me with directions so I could find the markers. Thank you so much for being kind and helpful. Once I got directions it was very easy to find. In the rushed and mean spirited world we live in today this kindness was very much appreciated. Thank you.

One person mentioned to lock your car, we did but we don't leave valuables in the car. Take a few moments and pause and realize we are only here a short period of time. Next interaction with someone thank them, be kind, leave them smiling.
