It was an incredible Halloween Dance party - even though this year it was on a Thursday- Oct. 31, 2024! Four of my freind and I attended - we went all out- we created our own costumes; the two friends from Holland, just back from sailing in Fijian islands, won the best costume prize. The music was just fantastic classic dancing rock and roll with a few Halloween themed songs thrown in, everyone was in costume, and we danced our arses off! The venue was superb as well - Anchor Rose at the Harbor, with a large outside deck to cool off between dancing, and very reasonable prices! We ate and drank and danced to great music. I've known Scott for many years as a dear friend and it was our first time working together on a professional level. We held our annual fundraiser at a newer location in town, the historic El Presidio Chapel Orchard downtown. Scott was very proactive in wanting to see the space in person to get an understanding of both the space and our needs. We also did a final walk through the week of the event to go over the event in detail and make any last minute adjustments, which was reassuring and helpful.  Scott was always responsive in communication and on time (actually early) for meetings, as well as the day of the event. His team was efficient and on top of everything. The market string lighting and up lights were wonderful. It was one of the pieces I was most nervous about as we had a live auction and paddle raise in the evening hours. There was ample lighting to facilitate those pieces of our programming. Scott did an amazing job with our anniversary party at the Canary rooftop. His music mix got everyone from every generation up and dancing for hours. He has a beefy audio setup that delivered great sound; all speeches went off perfectly with wireless lavs and handheld mics and his lighting setup was spot on. Where to begin. I had the Scott Topper experience and I was not impressed. There was no mixing or blending of music.... there was no progression or theme.. just random songs.. like someone had put an IPod on and pressed shuffle. There was a lot of stopping and starting dead time in between several songs.... The biggie for me was the lack of consideration for guests who were near the speakers. There were a few tables that were right next to the speakers at the event we were at. Several of us asked if they could move the speakers and they said no.. finally we asked if we could turn them.. we got a a yes but a dirty look. There were elderly people in addition to some twenty something who could not hear anything going on.. I don't want a nightclub.. I want a pleasant ambiance over dinner and cake. As the night progressed they turned to speakers again toward our table so we ended up having to move our chairs away from our eating area because the noise was too loud. Although I am sure many folks have had positive experience.. in my eyes the DJing was poor and not well done. read more

Even with having a wedding during the pandemic, Scott did not give up on us and adjusted to any last minute changes that we made (even the day of). Scott was a great DJ for our recent outdoor wedding! He had a great setup for the ceremony including a setup for our acoustic guitar player. During the reception it was important to us that the DJ not take a prominent role (talk too much) and Scott was great with this. He introduced people when needed and played songs that kept people on the dance floor! 60s-70s to start with and then he led into dancy hip-hop and rock. The reason for 3 stars is that he played a few songs that were not appropriate (including "Pour Some Sugar On Me" which we had specifically marked on our Do-Not-Play list as it is the quintessential stripper song) and he also didn't play songs we specifically requested beforehand (including a number of my favorite songs)! These songs, played and not played, still linger in my mind when I think of the wedding and I hope that memory will fade as it upsets me. Also, right before the reception (after the ceremony had ended), Scott came up to my husband while we were taking family pictures because Scott had forgotten the times to start and end the first dance song that we had previously discussed! My husband had to step aside and find his phone to look back in his emails. All in all he was a great DJ before and during the wedding. The longer version: - Communication was excellent from start to finish. Scott responded to our initial query, and any and every other e-mail, in under 24 hours. Scott was friendly, courteous and professional in each and every e-mail he sent. - Though Scott offers additional services (photo booth, light packages, etc.) there was never any pressure to add on anything we didn't want. Scott was very respectful of our wishes and needs, making it great to know the other services were available but never making us feel like lesser customers for not wanting to go for every add-on. - The reservation and evening planning process could not have been easier. Forms and contracts are straightforward with nothing sneaky hidden in the fine print. - It felt like Scott made a real attempt to get to know us, then offered really helpful ideas and suggestions for music and other elements of the evening about which we may have been uncertain. - On the most base music level, Scott abided by our rather eclectic music preferences/cues and didn't complain once about any of the specific requests we made. Scott also completely respected our music tastes and "do not play" lists, all while doing a fantastic job of reading the event and offering a great music selection beyond our particular choices (though everything we requested was played). - Sound quality was excellent during both the ceremony and reception. Not always an easy task at an outdoor event but Scott nailed it and clearly didn't cut any corners. Whenever I hire him for an event I never have to worry about him being on time, having a bad attitude or any of the usual DJ offenses. You will always find him smiling with high energy. Scott is especially great for Bar Mitzvahs and children's parties. He knows exactly how to be the perfect Emcee. He leads the kids through a series of games and will bring dancers or others to keep everyone happy. He has a great photo booth as well. If you book it with the DJ, he will give you a better deal. Scott was the DJ for our daughter's wedding June 30th. He's got a great energy and personality. He made it easy from the start by giving the bride and groom a list of potential songs they might want. Scott was the DJ at our wedding and also set up a photobooth rental through Action Photobooth. I have nothing but good things to say. He was VERY organized and professional, and was more than just a DJ, he was also like a day of coordinator! We met for about an hour going over my ideas for the day, and he helped me to fine tune the details and gave me clever ways to get everyone involved in the party and on the dance floor. During the last few weeks leading up to the wedding he was especially helpful in answering my questions and accommodating my ideas. He is very good at communication, whenever I e-mailed him he would get back to within 24 hours or less - which is very helpful for a stressed out bride! The day of the wedding he was on time, helpful, and really stuck to the plan that we had created. Scott has a very good feel for the energy of a party, and he definitely knew which songs to play at the right moment to get everyone involved. He dealt with guest requests really well and played all of the songs I had requested. Before big things like the cake cutting or father daughter dance, he would briefly come find me to make sure everyone was where they were supposed to be so no one missed the important moments. It was SUCH a fun night, and I really do think that Scott made it extra special. My husband and I weren't originally planning on getting a DJ, and now having gone through the experience I can say hands down it is EXTREMELY important to have someone professional that will do a good job. Scott is DEFINITELY that person. TERRIBLE: Do not use. We had our wedding reception cancelled because of COVID-19 and we tried to reschedule but he had no availability during the days our venue had availability. He violated his own contract by not giving us any of our retainer fee back (we actually legally are entitled to all of it back). He is now unresponsive to our calls and emails. Not only is this unethical business but it is also taking advantage of people during this unfortunate time. There are plenty of ethical DJs in Santa Barbara fo use so AVOID at all cost. read more

Scott Topper recently DJ-ed our wedding at the Santa Barbara Zoo and I'm so glad he did! To be honest, at first we were a bit nervous about hiring him. The zoo has a very small list of approved music vendors and you have to use one of them. Scott Topper definitely had the most professional website out of the bunch but we didn't really trust this mandatory list and we both had DJ friends of our own whose tastes we knew and liked. But, Scott Topper ended up being perfect. He and his assistant moved things along seamlessly and the parts he MC-ed were fun and appropriate. We ended up feeling relieved that we hired someone who had wedding experience because he did a lot more than just play songs. He helped us during wedding planning to decide when certain toasts and events should happen. He even facilitated a very fun Hora! My husband and I are music nerds and we didn't want any surprises- any songs that rubbed us the wrong way to unexpectedly play so we ended up giving Scott a really long playlist. We expressed our concerns and he said that because we had given him such a big list he wouldn't have to use any outside music and so we were able to relax knowing that only our picks would be played. It was pretty cool during the reception to notice some of my favorite songs playing in the background- I thought "oh, I love this song!" and then remembered that I had picked it! The PA system ran smoothly during the ceremony and reception and there was never any dead time. At times I wondered how he was going to cue the music when he was on the floor about to announce something and then I'd remember he had his assistant who seemed to be perfectly in sync with him and what was going on. I would recommend Scott Topper for any event. I would like to especially let couples who are getting married at the zoo know that if you are stressed about having to pick from this limited list of approved DJ's, don't worry! Scott Topper is on fire! I have worked with Scott on more than a few occasions and this allowed me to see the professional side of his business and this guy and his employees are on it. They are punctual, detailed, and show up to do the very best job possible and the client's desires are never short changed. Scott was our MC/ DJ for our wedding 5/14/16 at Circle Bar B, just north of Santa Barbara. Our wedding was a total DREAM and this is in large part due to the amazing services provided by Scott and his team. We booked Scott for MC/ DJ, up-lighting, and a photo booth.
