This is a review for delivery: The Friday dinner began on a low note, with one of the longest delivery times despite the restaurant being a 5-minute drive from our place. Luckily, having endured a couple of system crash leading to cancelled order experiences the weeks before, we knew to put in our Uber request early - 5:20pm by the time to final confirmation button was pressed. Hence, when the order was delayed two times (at the restaurant's request), everything still arrived by 6:40pm (compared to the original latest delivery time of 6pm). Was the meal a particularly complicated order? I didn't think so. Two entrees of jerk chicken and oxtail, an extra side of jerk chicken, and roti shells. Maybe it was the plain roti ($4.75) that led to the delay. Since Scotthill Caribbean Cuisine offers these as a main, I would have thought they could be prepared easily. In retrospect, they were dry and mealy and was only edible after dipping them into the thick complimentary vegetable stew. So, if the roti is what's holding up the kitchen, I suggest dropping it as a side to simplify operations. Scotthill's jerk chicken ($15 for the meal and $8 for an extra leg) doesn't hit you with a punch of flavour. It's definitely not bland. Rather, instead of just relying on heat, the seasoning tastes of a complex mixture of spices - the allspice and nutmeg (?) creates a subtle earthy finish that also has a fragrant element. While the restaurant does provide hot sauce on the side (and boy does this have heat), I wish it was built into the marinade to begin with so that it combines with the other spices and into the chicken better ... perhaps I should have painted the hot sauce onto the chicken instead of drizzling it on top? The oxtail ($22) is meaty and deliciously braised in a savoury gravy. Scotthill adds diced peppers into the sauce that gives an extra boost of flavour to the already tasty rice and peas. Oh, and the plantains... the caramelization is amazing and so sweet and soft that it could be dessert. Forget the roti, get plantain! read more

If you're looking for awesomely delicious, authentic Jamaican cuisine in the city, Scotthill has you covered. Everything we ordered was so delicious and exceeded our expectations. The interior was nice with a dark undertone. They have a very small patio outside (2 tables, with 2 chairs each). It seems to be a family-owned business. The owner and all the staff there are very friendly and the service deserves five stars. Now, on to the food: 1) Vegetable Soup - Complementary vegetable soup was on the house and came in the beginning. For something complementary and on the house, it was REALLY good. Legit big chunks of vegetables (zucchini, carrot, etc.) in a nice, thick, hearty potato-based broth. It tasted really flavourful and felt like an actual meal (compared to the typical "complementary" appetizer soups served in other restaurants, which are usually just mostly light broth and not much content). It gave a good first impression of the food. 2) Escovitch Red Snapper - The whole red snapper cooked escovitch-style was perfect. The fried fish contained lots of meat, and it was topped with lots of vegetables (okra, broccoli, carrot, onion, green & red pepper). It also came with plantain slices, coleslaw, and rice & beans. Everything was perfect together. 3) Coleslaw - Normally I'm not a fan of coleslaw because it's too creamy (dislike mayo), but the coleslaw at Scotthill was bomb! It contained no mayo, and it tasted very refreshing and tangy with the vinegar. Perfect complement to all the other dishes we ordered. 4) Ackee and Vegetables - The ackee was soft and buttery as usual, mixed with a good amount of vegetables (broccoli, onion, green and red pepper). Great taste. 5) Callaloo - Another tasty vegetable dish. 6) Ackee and Saltfish Roti - The roti was quite large, filled with lots of potatoes and good amount of the ackee & saltfish. It came with coleslaw and plantain slices. The saltfish (cod) had a nice firm texture, and it wasn't too salty at all. The only comment would be that it contained too many potatoes, which took away the taste of the ackee and saltfish a little bit. But overall a very filling (and carb-y) dish. Overall, my favourite items that I tried from the menu are the Escovitch Red Snapper, Ackee and Vegetables, Callaloo, and Coleslaw. read more

This review is based upon uber eats. I was so excited to finally see a Caribbean restaurant in the area, as it really is lacking around here. I ordered the jerk chicken meal and a patty. Everything was dry and cold! The jerk chicken was dry and almost burnt to a crisp. I also added to put extra gravy, but not a drop. The plantain was hard and barely edible. The patty could have been the saving grace, but it was so cold, that I couldn't enjoy it. I am so disappointed that this did not turn out to be a positive experience. Not sure they have designated parking, however there is parking on the street and it is limited. Tried Scotthill for lunch and after years of search my wife (who is Jamaican) and I have decided this is currently the best Caribbean place in the city. Foremost, they have tried to elevate the cuisine including the presentation of the dishes. I also found their interpretation of jerk is also the best, there is heat but not the kind that lingers or provokes fits of coughing because that is simply liberal use of pepper and hot sauce. But of course no place is perfect and you don't want to read that kind of review anyway. Not all dishes are available everyday, and that is a little ... frustrating given that it is the responsibility of the restaurant to have everything available on their menu. Otherwise leave it off. Their coleslaw was fresh but I would have preferred a more creamy texture for cohesiveness as the vinaigrette didn't bind the components together. Does that sound pompous? My hubby and I decided to celebrate our 5 year anniversary by having dinner here last night. It was everything we wanted: deliciously seasoned, West Indian food. We entered at 8:30pm and by 8:39pm, we were served with water and our order taken. 20min to waiting, we were served COMPLIMENTARY homemade soup that was just perfect for such a cold night. Provisions, vegetables in a spicy broth. It doesn't get any better and what a great touch by the owner. Every patron got soup with their order. About 15min later, our entrees were served: I had the oxtail and my hubby had the jerk pork. Yes, $20.00 for oxtail is expensive, but you're not getting some takeout portion, and you're getting rice and peas, coleslaw, plantain along with 10+ pieces of oxtail. I had no problem paying $20.00. People spend the same amount on fast food, so there should be no complaints about the cost of food. Music was playing during our stay which had the right touch for your enjoyment. The service was spot on and take it from me, someone who is quick to notice subpar service, you won't notice the time it takes to make your dinner. I see it becoming a local favourite, more so due to the lack of dine-in Carribean restaurants. In terms of parking, I recommend parking in the neighbourhoods and walking over if you don't want to pay. Before this, I've been to Rhum Corner on Dundas with my Haitian friend. I've had plantains and rice and beans there and this was what I based my review off of. Since it was the first day of its opening, we were unable to order some items on the menu. We ended up having Jerk Chicken ($10) and BBQ Chicken ($10). Both came with a side of coleslaw and rice. Everything tasted fresh and service was great. We also talked briefly with who I assume was the owner - he asked about how we found the food and all. My impression was that this restaurant wanted to steer away from the "grubby," heavy meals being served in white styrofoam containers and instead, allow individuals to enjoy these meals in a different setting. At the same time, it wanted to preserve Carribean culture and foods. However, at the same time, I was expecting larger portions. A recommendation I have is for a complimentary appetizer to be served beforehand.
