I'm hesitant to leave a review here because this place has long been viewed by our group of friends…read moreas a hidden gem, and we'd like to keep it hidden. But if any place deserves recognition for doing everything right, it's the incredible people who make French Woods a home away from home. It started as a place where a dozen friends, living around the metropolitan area, could spend a weekend golfing, drinking, and telling stories around a campfire. It quickly morphed into something much more. To start, the golf course offers what city courses never could; a round in under 5 hours, wide open fairways, and no sounds other than the sounds of nature and the occasional expletive from an errant shot. The fact that cabins, which are more like 2 story homes, are located right on the course, provides an unparalleled convenience and comfort. All of this can be found through a simple google search. What google couldn't tell you, is the unmatched hospitality by the owner, Russell, and everyone who makes the clubhouse feel like a family waiting to greet you at the turn. Linda and Angie are always there to give you a good ribbing based on how terrible you looked off the first tee. But they're also there to walk you through the days specials, which never cease to feel like the best home cooked meal you've had in ages. Google also couldn't tell you quite how it feels to tee the ball up on the elevated 16th hole. To look around at the beautiful landscape and think "you know, it just doesn't get any better than this." Nor what it feels like to tee a second one up when you inevitably slice that first one into the woods trying to drive the green. It couldn't tell you that feeling you get taking a hot shower after playing 36 holes, cracking a cold beer and stepping outside to the campfire being assembled with the delivered quarts of wood courtesy of the O'Malley boys. It couldn't tell you that after sharing stories around the fire and passing around a bottle of whiskey, that if you laid down in the cool grass, you could see the clearest sky filled with stars. It couldn't tell you that drinking beer all day and killing a bottle of Jameson at the campfire would make it difficult to make your 8:30 tee time you promised Linda you'd make. Nor could it tell you that luckily the screwdrivers and bloody Marys in the clubhouse are made with magical elixirs that help pull a man back together just in time to slice your opening drive into the reeds on the first hole. Better make sure to grab a breakfast sandwich too, you'll need it around the third hole. It certainly could not tell you about the agony these vicious greens sometimes impart. It certainly would leave out what it's like to hit your tee shot over the water of the par 3 9th as the rest of your group watches on with cheers and jeers. It wouldn't be able to explain being up by 1 heading into the 18th hole only to see your tee shot land directly in the pond on the right side of the fairway. All of these need to be discovered for yourself. For our group, which has ballooned to upwards of 24 people at times, it's that treatment like we're family that keeps us coming back. We'll continue to try and make new memories and build upon our current traditions such as our Ryder cup and classic cup tournaments, the barefoot two club walking holes as the sun goes down, the tradition unlike any other of shotgunning a beer on the 7th (and 16th hole), the s'mores mix around the fire, the big kevs bbq on Friday nights, and the runs around beautiful French woods in honor of our beloved Jeff Garroway. We've come to love this place, and everyone who makes it what it is. Forever grateful, The Bender Boys

The time spent here is beyond perfect. The course plays fast with wide fairways and smallish greens. The pin placement on 6 had me wanting to break my putter. Kudos to Russel and Family and the whole crew. Already planning for year 3! Thanks for having us!!

This is actually two reviews, one for lodging and one for the restaurant…read more The restaurant: I'll start by saying that I did not want to eat here. Based on several bad reviews online, I wanted to skip the bar & grill, but we had a big party and the logistics of moving everyone made it impossible. I wasn't feeling confident when we arrived and we were the only ones there. I was wrong. First our server was fantastic, and not just because we were her only table. Second, the food was good. Again, I was not excited to eat here, and the fusion menu in a golf resort bar & grill gave me pause, so ordered the safe chicken cutlet sandwich. Others ordered the coconut shrimp, quesadilla, dumplings, Caesar salad and NY Strip Steak. It was all delicious. My chicken cutlet was fresh- rather than processed, fried perfectly and served in lovely ciabatta bread. No complaints from anyone at the table. The foodies I was with even enjoyed the house red...go figure. The lodging: The location is lovely, this is truly God's country. When we arrived for a wedding weekend, it was us and two others, also there for the wedding. We have no idea what the season is for the Catskill's. but we couldn't believe it was so quiet given the gorgeous foliage. The lodging in motel style, but a bit elevated. There's an elevator and it is covered. The rooms were nice, the fridge was a nice touch and the beds were very comfortable. If in the area again we would definitely stay there.

This is a review after our stay at the Hanah House, the private cabin at Hanah Mountain Resort. I…read moreand 5 other guests rented the Hanah House for two nights while in town for a wedding. The biggest complaints: The Hanah House was not clean, amenities were broken, and we were treated dismissively by the Hanah manager, Deb. Shortly after checking in, we noticed the heat was not working. We called into the main lobby, and maintenance promptly came and turned on the heat to the bedrooms and left a space heater in the main room until they could fix it the next day. I was very pleased about how quickly maintenance handled it, this is not a complaint about that. But it's just the first of many issues illustrating that the Hanah House was not at all made ready for guests prior to our arrival. We quickly discovered: - There were dirty towels on the floor in the master bathroom (pictured below). They had been there so long that a spider had built a web between them and the bathtub. - There was leftover food baked onto a pan left in the oven (pictured below). I can only assume it was from the same party that left the cobwebbed dirty towels. This made the oven unusable. - There were flies in the house and multiple dead ones on the carpet in each of the bedrooms. - we also had complaints about the fact that the electric fireplace did not work, and that there were no comforters in the room. I was satisfied by the manager's explanation that the fireplace is a fire hazard, and does not work by design, and that the comforters have been removed due to covid protocol. Over the next few nights, we discovered that multiple things were broken: - The first night, the fire alarm in the main room began beeping, indicating it needed its battery changed. To me, this indicates the hotel does not regularly check them. - The second morning, when the 6 of us were running around getting ready for the wedding, we discovered the showerhead in the master bath did not work and only produced a trickle of water. - We also discovered that the hairdryer in the master bath, the only one in the house, did not work. I asked specifically ahead of time if they had hairdryers and irons available anticipating we would need them for the wedding. When we checked out, we let the front desk know about our issues and they told us they'd notify the manager, Deb, and ask her to call us. Deb called me the next day, but when I asked if there was anything she could do about all the problems we experienced, or if it would be possible to get partial compensation since the house wasn't up to par, she refused. She assigned the issues to the fact that the house is a rustic cabin. I understand that the house is not a 5-star mansion, but things were broken, dirty, and the house did not appear to be ready for guests when we checked in. My partner asked her if she could speak to upper management. When I checked in with her two days later, she informed me that upper management held the same position. She also cut me off when I was speaking to say goodbye and hung up on me. I have never asked for compensation or complained before about a hotel. I understand these are usually run by people doing their best to provide for their guests, and mistakes do happen. But the house was dirty, amenities were broken, and the most we got was a "sorry, but it's a cabin."
