Sidewalk Surfer has been rocking the block for 40+ years, which is basically 280 in small-business years. That alone deserves a medal. But here's why I'm dropping five stars, life threw a random situation at me (single lady, can't lift/fix/do the heavy stuff solo), so I wandered around asking for help. One shop said no. Sidewalk Surfer? The guy behind the counter didn't blink ... he came out to help. Absolute angel, in Vans. Put him man on Mount Rushmore, except give him a skateboard! This isn't just a shop. This skate shop was absolutely AMAZING! From the time I walked in the front door, customer service was AMAZING! First Class!!! Ask for Tim because not only is he fun to talk too but has probably been at that skate shop the longest, has great stories & can find whatever you want in that shop because the selection of skate boards, wheels/trucks, roller skates, which you can get them custom made, stickers, lots of skate apparel(t-shirts, shoes, socks, pants for male/female/kids) is just AMAZING.There inventory is plentiful. ARIZONA ROLLER SKATERS: I love coming to this skate shop because it's not only for skateboards but for roller skating! They have toe caps, indoor/outdoor wheels, accessories, toe stops, and everything you might need! I have been to other skate shops around the valley asking for help with my roller skates and they tell me they know nothing about roller skating, so now I come to Sidewalk Surfers. They helped me change my wheels, secure my toe stop and more. They were also very friendly, which is important for me because I'm newer to skating. The employee and patron that were here when I bought my skates were very nice. I mistook a patron for an employee but we had a good laugh about it. They were very nice as was the employee. The employee was not hovering and let you have your time to really check out the item before asking you your thoughts. I really appreciated that and their willingness to work with me so I could get the skates I truly wanted! I will probably be constantly cleaning these cute pink skates to keep 'em looking nice as I fall probably too many times. This is a very cool shop with a massive selection of decks, complete boards, tons of accessories to include a great selection of shoes and clothing. I picked up the Landyachtz Battle Axe longboard yesterday, pretty happy with it, I'm going to throw some Orangatang wheels on it for a softer ride on these rougher roads. I'm glad to have stumbled upon this place in a time when everybody's Starbuckin', it's good to find a stand-alone business that puts the big chains to shame. read more

My skates are super old so the nuts and bolts were being hard, Kevin took apart my skate retightened the bolts and even gave me new bolts for my wheels! Went in to find a good pair of roller skates. We were offered help as soon as we walked in and they were very helpful in explaining the differences between all of their options. I will say that all of them were pretty expensive, but I'm so excited with the quality of skates that I was able to find. They also have tons of different wheels and laces and other gear. If you're looking for custom roller skates, they can even make a pair out of any shoe, which I will definitely be back for. Overall, everyone was helpful and friendly and I'll definitely be back in the future! read more

Only go here if you already know what you want, exactly. I went here to check out longboards for myself and roller skates for my wife; been boarding for a few years and I figured it was time for an upgrade/refresh/whatever. We had a shopping/wish list ahead of time and wanted to talk to experienced people on board styles and get a hands on feel. We checked out the roller skate area first - not really a big selection, but better than nothing. They didn't have what we wanted there, only thing that caught our eye briefly was pricey, used rollers. The roller skate section is sort of exiled from the rest of store, maybe someone is over there occasionally, but not while we went. The longboard selection is definitely the best I have seen out here, between a handful of shops I've browsed, which is quite unfortunate. I noticed landyahts, some Sector 9, great variety of lengths and widths, a good selection of mid sized cruisers and longer drop-throughs, and a back wall of boards that included models from the Loaded family. Everything was brand name and mostly $140 up, so if you are just getting started, you should probably check out a different shop or even get something cheaper on Amazon to get a pulse on boarding. There were two people there: one middle aged with longer, grey hair working at a computer, seemingly oblivious to our existence; and a near bald man, working behind the long counter. The person working behind the bar-style counter was outright hostile; he didn't offer any insight or input while we were looking around, was very condescending to us, and made us extremely uncomfortable in the store. He answered questions I asked, barely, and almost always in a way that made me feel worse for having asked. Trying to learn things from him was basically impossible, besides being implied as stupid. I know my way around boards, but I obviously don't work at a shop - I should be able to ask questions. The guy clearly knows his stuff, even if he is an unhelpful jerk to customers. Maybe it was a bad day? But the other reviews here check out: bad vibes, bad human skills. Overall, I plan to avoid buying stuff here - great selection, if you want to try and test the feel of a particular board. But you'll grt no help sorting through the boards or finding a fit. The internet has a better yet selection, and it actually tries to help people find what they want. I noticed that there is a mark up on some of the boards - place has to make money, so whatever, but if you already know what you want ‍ you might as well save and buy it cheaper from a store/brand you like. My understanding is that the management of the place went from the full time owner to three guys, including the one I spoke to; frankly, I am surprised she trusts these people with her business and name, and I wonder just how many people have been put off from boarding just because some middle aged man couldn't keep an attitude in check. No "expert" is worth being bullied, and is useless to a customer when they aren't approachable/conversational. I didn't even feel like I was wanted as a customer, and despite the decent options I found, I couldn't bring myself to buy from the resident grinch. If I hadn't made a check list of things ahead of time, I wouldn't have had any way of discerning between the board styles and figuring out what I wanted. I also might have felt embarrassed enough to buy a board I was only medium okay with, and anything in that $200 range is a lot to spend without getting at least some helpful feedback. It you know you tend to buy things when you are uncomfortable/feel social anxiety, this store is not the place for your wallet to be hanging out. Don't come here and instead check out many of the much kinder stores out there :) they will be much more helpful and personable in finding something that fits you. Skateboarding, rollerblading, paddle boarding, diving - if you know me you know I'm all about extreme sports. Sidewalk Surfer is my go-to spot for my gear. I've been shopping here since I was a kid and even bought my first skateboard here. They are Arizona's oldest skate shop and have been around since the late 70's. They have a great selection of skateboard decks, wheels & trucks and keep the prices very reasonable. I just recently bought a Sector 9 longboard and love it. I ride that thing everywhere and keep it in my trunk at all times. They also have a huge inventory of shorts & shoes and in my opinion the best selection of Vans in the Valley. The store managers have been here forever and are super helpful. What keeps this place running is the loyalty of us customers that have been coming here for years. I've never been a skater, but when I was growing up in Scottsdale, this is where all the skaters I knew got their stuff. So when our nephew got into skating, we knew he needed a helmet that would keep him safe but not look so lame that he'd never wear it. I knew we needed a real skate shop and not a big box store. (I'm a cyclist. I know what it feels like to want a Specialized and end up with a Huffy.) So when we went back to Scottsdale to visit my folks, we went straight here, because while I don't know what the good skate shops are in Houston, I know Sidewalk Surfer is legit. The staff knew their stuff and picked out something for him that he wears with pride and uses every day. So if you're a parent, know that you can trust these folks to give you good advice and that they sell quality stuff. So happy I stopped at this place first before going to Zumiez around the corner! I really didn't want to be basic and go to zumiez and thought there has to be a local shop! I found these guys, went in, and left with a new board in 10 min. They let me try and ride around until I felt like I found the one for me. They also made sure it was all in good shape and tight before leaving the shop with it. Lots of options to choose from and the staff was very friendly and informative.
