4.5/5 Call it what you will, midlife crisis, pandemic boredom, or a little of Column A & a little of Column B, but I thought it would be cool to take up skateboarding. It's one of those things I always wanted to do, so now was a good time as any, right? I loved surfing when I took a lesson while visiting Hawaii a few years back, and I thought of skateboarding as similar except no ocean needed! A Yelp search steered me to Cowtown. The Tempe location is in the downtown area, a place I despise with a passion due to the traffic and general lack of parking BUT it's not too bad getting here or finding a parking spot! It's a pretty straight shot down University and then you can turn off of Ash into their private parking lot. The employees here are alright. My first trip here was to get my first skateboard. I told the employee exactly that too. He went to the completes and deck section and explained very generally what to look for, and to ask lots of questions. He then meandered off back to the cashier counter. That was pretty much the extent of my guidance. I'm glad he said I can ask as many questions as I want but if it's my first time there's probably a lot that I don't know, so I don't know what I don't know, ya know? I did ask what brands he recommended for a beginner but all he said was "All our boards here are high quality so pick whatever feels right to you." Touché, skate dude, touché. So, I got out a few boards and stood on them to get a feel. It was a very low key, no pressure environment. I finally found one that felt just right, but it was all scuffed up. I know it's going to get scuffed up just by using it when I ride, but if I'm paying good $$ for a board it might as well be one that hasn't already been used amirite? I want to be the only one messing up my own board :p. Another employee at the counter was nice enough to check with the other locations to see if they had the same board but in better condition. I was in luck because they had it still in the plastic, in pristine condition. YES! Even better was that they could transfer the board over that same day. I got a call just a few hours later, very speedy service! They have a wide variety of completes and decks, ranging from 7.3-9+ from what I remember, and I ended up with an smaller sized Antihero complete. The employee that ordered the board for me mentioned I could switch out the wheels for some softer, larger ones for cruising which I might do once I actually start going places on the board vs. practicing. I've also ordered some shoes and I feel like their shoe selection is also curated with care much like their boards are. The Vans I wanted was actually available here in my size vs. the actual Vans website. If you buy anything online and are local you can have the item shipped to one of their stores for free pickup vs. paying for shipping. My order was ready the next day and I got a call when it came in. The shoes were in perfect condition and feel great on my feet and on the board. read more

I hate to give a local skate shop a bad review, but I have to. I bought a new set up here (except trucks) and the total came out to $180. If I got trucks ($50-60) I would've been spending $230-$250 for a complete skateboard. This actually sickens me. Imagine a poor kid trying to save up to by themselves a skateboard and this shop telling them it's going to be over $200 for a quality skateboard! I love supporting local shops, especially local skate shops so I bit the bullet but it still doesn't excuse these prices. It's a dope shop with some chill workers. I can honestly say I'll never be back though. I couldn't work here and charge someone over $200 for a skateboard... especially some kid who probably worked really hard for his money. read more

Very poorly managed by the management. Was super excited about the new dunks they just dropped and stood in line for 3hrs in the damn heat! No employees came out to address the crowds who were looking to buy the new dunks, how many they had in stock! It's brutal just to stand outside without any shades. People could've fainted of dehydration/heat. How cruel can these employees be not informing the crowd??? They absolutely have no heart! Will never support this business again! read more

A couple of things, other reviewer talked about the 4 year old getting on the skateboard. There are signs clearly stating "do not ride the new boards in the store". Here's a thought other reviewer, control your damn kid! You should be able to handle a 4 year old even with your $80-$100 of stuff. And for the lady who said they pay no attention to you if you don't look like a skater.... I'm a middle aged fat lady, I do not look like a skater and I barely stepped in the door before I got 3 smiles and hello's. Went in with my 10 year old. His dad sent us there to get a specific brand of helmet. I had no idea what I was looking for but had a picture of the type. Peaches was awesome and got down every color in my sons size so he could try them on and find the "best one." Then Peaches sat down with my 10 year old and let him try on the knee and elbow pads we were about to buy to make sure they had the right fit. 20 minutes later Peaches had heard my 10 year olds whole life story. The two of them became buds and Peaches recommended some local skate parks for my son to go to. My son can't wait to see him out there one day. Will always try to make this our first stop for his future skateboarding needs. When you find a good skate shop that makes your 10 year old feel like one of the guys you know you've found the right place. Thanks guys for all of your help! read more

The original and only real skate shop in phoenix area best customer service and cool friendly staff from the ownership down to the workers

They only get a 2 because the boards are great but the service is so slow I can't rate them any higher. If you have nothing to do but waste your whole day or night waiting for their employees to yap with everyone they check out, this is your place. In 2 trips I spent almost $600 and waited in line for more than an hour total with no more than 3 people ahead of us either time. On the 2nd trip we gave them the board my daughter chose with her gift card. Then my other daughter did a custom board and paid for it and they made us go back to the back of the line to pay for the first one. Easily 20 more minutes waiting for them then my daughter got to the front and the dude took 2 of his friends ahead of her, made us wait even longer then made a snide comment about us waiting in a "single file" line. As we left the store, the 2 employees were talking about us and laughing. NOT FUNNY DUDES. NOT FUNNY AT ALL. Needless to say we will be taking our 5 kids to a different store for their boards from now on. If I were the owner or manager I would be really pissed at these guys. I'm sure there are plenty of other people who are just as qualified and a lot faster who would provide decent customer service. read more

I was happy to find my skateboard grip at this shop for a fairly decent price. I was greeted upon entry, as the guy was cutting my grip I clearly asked him "how much will it be"? He kept on going as if I hadn't said anything so I asked again in a louder tone then he answered. When I was paying he started having a conversation with the 2 guys idling by the counter about what they were watching on tv and hardly even looked at me. I could feel a weird vive from the other guys and the guy behind the counter, so who works here and who is just standing around ? Places like this could provide a great experience if they would train their employees on customer service and make sure everyone who walks through that door feels appreciated for their business and not like their being a nuisance for wanting to buy something here. read more

It's so sad the shop has a great selection but whoever owns that place needs to re-evaluate who they hire. Literally the best customer service you'll ever get at a skate shop and I'm from Santa Cruz lmao. Usually when I go in a shop the workers are kinda standoffish, maybe cause I'm a woman? But that's not at all how it was here. I walked in and this mans Anthony was doing stock but I told him I was looking for a cheap build since I just needed one to keep at my parents here for when I visit and he stopped what he was doing and gave me a quick run down of my options and told me what size board to look for without being condescending whatsoever (not at all what my experience was like at a different place when I built my first board). Anthony helped me put a board together that was in my price range and was super friendly to other customers while he was building my board instead of just ignoring them which was awesome to see. I gotta browse their merch too and they carry polar and hockey which is sweet. I got a cowtown tshirt which I'm so stoked to rep back in sc. Anyways!! Anthony is the friggin homie like dead ass the kinda guy you'd ask to hold your drink at a bar. He deserves a friggin raise! Bought a $72 dollar skateboard. It broke in less then 24 hours. They couldn't do anything at Thunderbird store and they told me to call tempe to get manufacturer number. I call Tempe and all they have is a vendor to email so basically I'm out $72 dollars and I have to send an email to see if I can get a new board. Crazy I've been shopping here since I was 10 and I've never had a shit experience until now. read more
