Repotting young plants---did several experiments to judge quality side-by-side. Tried two non-Scott products, "organic" dirt and "texas dirt". 1st--The non-Scott "organic" dirt clearly had wood chips, not totally decayed. Suspect the non-Scott had re-cycled mulch, maybe a strong one NOT letting anything grow. The young plants put in that dirt immediately stopped growing, remained without growth, but did not die, thankfully. (Did the recycled wood include pine or cedar chips which contain a natural resin that is a natural herbicide? We were warned, in 4-H, when kids, not to plant gardens on soil where pines had been, for that reason, instead to check for untoxic trees such as maples .) I then re-potted this first set of plants in Scott Miracle-Gro "potting soil". All then started to send out new stems and leaves, finally able to flower, fruit-up and re-seed. CONCLUSION 1: Scott "potting soil" beat unbranded "organic" bought at same store. (NOTE: using same store prevented poor bag upkeep at one store vs good bag upkeep at a second store from being a factor.) 2nd--The non-Scott "Texas dirt" looked grayish in color, not the healthy black of Scott potting soil. It instead felt to the fingers like what some would call "exhausted soil", as if no humous content. (Maybe cotton was grown on it for a century, without the recommended rotations into alfalfa and soybeans to preserve fertility? No cows grazing to add natural nitrogen via their manure? Or? Maybe farm heirs sold failing land to housing developers who scooped up the "extra dirt" from digging basements etc? Or...?). Did not have this experiment in pots, but planted in border by driveway. Usually lawn grass creeps into such beds and have to pull it. This time, not! The "texas dirt" acted clay-like, stayed pressed down, resisted grass intrusion as if it were a ground cover for several months, before the grass finally broke through. Plants transplanted to it did not grow either. I then put these plants back into Scott's "potting soil", where upon they revived. CONCLUSION 2: Scott "potting soil" beat unbranded "Texas dirt" bought at same store. read more

I used Miracle-Gro Powder on my creeping phlox. I used the correct amount - 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water - and fed all 21 of my plants. I spent a lot of money and time to keep these plants looking beautiful. Miracle-Gro KILLED all 21 plants. I am angry and frustrated and will never use the product again. read more

The product burned my lawn. Customer service was very nice nut not real helpful. They kept looking for reasons of what I did wrong by asking questions about my application. When all failed, they quickly jumped to the weather. The thing is, I purchased the product that is supposed to work in high heat in Florida. I spoke with their vendor Sam at Home Depot today June 5th around 1:00 -1:30 or longer. She was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with advice on seed, shrubs a variety of things. Earthgro mulch quality control sucks! I purchased four bags of Brown Earthgro mulch two weeks ago and picked up another five from Home depot a few days ago. I layed down the four bags from two weeks ago then started on the bags from a couple of days ago. Not only is the mulch the wrong color but also a completely different consistency. I'm now going to have to pull up the four bags I previously put down. And just in case you're wondering, all bags were labeled the same. The empty bag shows the top color and the partially opened bags show the crap which I most recently purchase. Got $ back from Home Depot but not nothing for my time and effort to fix this problem. read more

Sadly, another ex-reliable company down the tubes! Have been buying Scott's Lawn products for decades. Worked just fine. Couple weeks ago, bought a bag of Scott's Weed n' Feed X2 to put down on my lawn. It was going to be perfect conditions for 3-4 days. I'll just cut to the chase ..... after spending extra $$ to buy Scott's product, after going to store to pick up, schlepping from store to car, and car to house, and house to spreader. After spending 45 minutes wetting my lawn. After spending 30 minutes putting the weed n' feed down, and after spending another half hour cleaning up . . . . NOTHING HAPPENED? Next day nothing happened. Not one shriveled weed. 3rd day .... nothing week later ... nothing now it's almost 2 weeks later and not one shriveled weed? Yes, I now know how foolish I was to actually contact the Scott's company! Thought I might have gotten a bad bag from a bad batch? The Pre-Programmed Robot Response was to copy the directions from the bag in the email they sent. That's it. Even, after I made sure they knew this wasn't my first Rodeo, even after I made sure that they knew I followed directions? Doesn't matter. Euphamistically, they said thanks for giving us money, we won't do anything but antagonize you for having the nerve to contact us with a complaint?????? Beware..."Weed B Gon" by Ortho, a division of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, will kill your lawn. "Weed B Gon" by Ortho, a division of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, killed my lawn and even though I have contacted them, they have offered no remedy to correct the situation or restore my lawn. I purchased this product at Home Depot in late July 2020 two weeks before a wedding event at my home. The lawn was very healthy but had some crab grass and dandelions which I was wanting to kill before a wedding event in August. I shopped at Home Depot specifically for a product that could be applied on the weeds in the lawn that would not kill the lawn. I was recommended at Home Depot to buy the Scotts, Ortho product called "Weed B Gon". Home Depot associate pointed out on the front label, a prominently displayed guarantee, "Won't harm the lawn. Guaranteed". The associated demonstrated that it had a built in sprayer so it did not need to be diluted. Just walk around and spot spray any weed in the lawn. I then purchased the product and spot sprayed the crabgrass and dandelions on the lawn in front and back of our house. The product was applied two weeks before the event only to have it kill the lawn just days after spot spraying. This was a shocking result which was an embarrassing situation for our event since the lawn had dead spots all over it. I would never have used it had the packaging not said, "Won't harm the lawn. Guaranteed". Unfortunately I did use the product and had a very bad result that greatly took away from our event. After our event, I contacted Ortho by phone and spoke with a Fred who promised me that the lawn was not dead, that if I watered it for 3 weeks, it would revive. It has now been nearly a month since I spot treated my lawn with the "Weed B Gon" product and there has been no improvement. I was watering my lawn regularly before I treated it and even more so after the lawn started to die but there has been zero recovery. Ortho has offered to refund the cost of the product (basically a few dollars) which I could care less about. I care about the thousands of dollars it is going to take to replace the lawn. See attached three pictures of a portion of my damaged lawn. I WISH I COULD GIVE A NEGATIVE SCORE BUT A "1" IS THE BEST YELP OFFERS. Purchased the Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Soil and found an enormous amount of gravel in the bag. After two days of rain on the spots I repaired to reseed I found even more gravel. I also found sticks and wood chips. I would not purchase this again! I also stopped purchasing their grass seed due to it's inconsistent germination. I have not had a good experience ordering directly from the company. My order came in multiple boxes and a few parcels at the time. Seven bags of potting soil were never delivered. When I contacted customer service and several days later, they sent me FedEx tracking numbers. However all the numbers say is package delivered, but I have no way of knowing which tracking number was associated with my soil order. I have asked customer service for help, but have yet to receive a reply. I recommend, if at all possible, that you buy these products from a local retailer and avoid ordering directly from the company. read more

This mulch if full of very large pieces of wood, NOT mulch. I WOULD, IN NO WAY, EVER RECOMMEND THIS SCOTTS MULCH. IT IS THE WORST MULCH I HAVE EVER PURCHASED! According to my local Home Depot gardening specialist (thank you for the heads up) this company markets a whole line of soils called "Organic Choice" that are not actually organic (as consumers generally understand that term). I was specifically looking for organic soil to grow vegetables and was duped by the big green bag and the huge words "Organic" on the front of the package. If you turn the package around however, in very fine print at the very bottom there's a certification from the Mulch and Soil Council ("MSC") which also contains a disclaimer stating that the product certification provided by the MSC on this product does NOT guarantee that there are no pesticides in the product. WTF? So, Scotts Miracle-Gro is selling soil called "organic" that might contain pesticides? That's what the Home Depot garden specialist told me. When I told them I wanted organic soil, they told me not to buy the "Organic Choice" products by Scotts Miracle-Gro. Instead I was pointed to Kellogg soils. Shame on Scott's Miracle-Gro for marketing soils that may contain pesticides as "organic". How is this legal? (I guess I should've known better after reading that the main ingredient in the fake organic soil is actually chicken sh*t. Were these "organic" chickens? I doubt it.) But double-shame on Scott's Miracle-Gro for not showing the MSC's disclaimer about not guaranteeing the product is pesticide free on the label for "Organic Choice" on the Miracle Gro website. Very, very deceiving to say the least. This is no accident. Someone somewhere in the company made a decision to leave this info off the web. Bottom Line: They're selling products labeled "Organic" that are not (according to my local Home Depot). Again, shame on Scott's Miracle-Gro. read more

Bought lawn seed from Amazon back in the beginning of April planed it, really never grew. I noticed on the back of the Scotts lawn miracle grow bag it said If not happy full refund. I contacted their 800#, they asked me to mail (SNAIL MAIL... get with the times !!) the receipt, I did, said they would refund via a amazon card... Nothing, they never did ! I put a complaint on BBB The Better business bureau... they never replied Plus there is a lot of complaints on there for the same thing ! Looks like their guarantee is a USELESS LIE !!!! For 3+ years, I have been using the Aerogarden system made by this company to grow herbs and peppers. I have invested over $1,000 in the contraptions. I have enjoyed the enterprise. The customer service, however, has deteriorated to the point where my only option is to review the parent company. Two harvests ago, I again cultivated Thai Peppers. After the 4 month grow period, I found that the peppers were the wrong variety. My Thai friends laughed at the thought of cooking with them. I notified the company and was sent more Thai Pepper pods. You guessed it - after 4 months up came the same wrong variety. In the garden business, this is about as negligent as a provider can be. Calling in, hot as a Thai Pepper myself, I was phone messaged with the news that, due to the corona virus, only email support was available. I informed them of the problem, asked for the correct replacement pods, and told them I wanted a new, free garden to check the growth of these new pods and to compensate me for my lost time. I also informed them that the corona virus is not an excuse for bad service and that working from home did not mean phone lines were unavailable. TWO WEEKS LATER, I was emailed that new pods were on the way but that I would not be getting a free garden. Obviously, since the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different result, I am kind of at a loss. Should I re-plant pods that have twice been wrong? I think not. And the claim that at this time unprecedented numbers of people are looking for healthy food is only true if the seller of the healthy good is competent and reliable. read more

I purchased two bags of their Turf Builder Grass Seed, Tall Fescue Mix from 03/31/2016 to 04/12/2016. The bag clearly states that the product is guaranteed. Out of almost 40 pounds of seed applied to the lawn, only 25% of their product took. I even reapplied the seed three times in certain areas. When I complained via online chat with one of their representatives, the person informed me that it is their policy that the customer send a letter with the original receipts via US mail, even though I supplied them with the SKU number and proof of purchase information (saved the bags). It is very easy for mail to "get lost". A customer shouldn't be required to send in original receipts to get a refund on their product. They could easily accept pictures via e-mail. So I filed a BBB report. I won't purchase their product again. It is too much of a hassle. I spent countless hours seeding and reseeding. And dealing with this type of refund policy is a complete turn off. As for the previous person who posted about labeling a product organic when it isn't, it isn't legal. If they are doing this, you need to file a report with the proper state department, probably the Department of Agriculture. read more

If you try to make several claims for faulty products , such as hose end sprayer chemicals that do NOT work at all, (Scotts MossEx 3-in-1 Ready-Spray, 32 oz), you're SCREWED. I received a letter that stated that any of my future purchases from Scott's are without its guarantee. Well, can't do that legally, but in effect they can as they have the upper hand, unless I take it to small claims court, which of course is not worth the time or effort. read more

This company many times has and still produces inferior products. I live in Dallas ,Texas aera and in Feb. I applied to my yard, Scott's Halts( gradual) for pre emergent . In 2 weeks a large amount of weeds started poping up. The I applied a second time. And even more weeds came up, as if I were feeding them. Then I applied Weed -B-Gone as application instructions and temps in low 80's. Te weed trippled. Then went to professional landscaping product company and applied their weed killer and fertilizer and in 2 weeks my yard looks like a profeshional landscaping company is maintaining my yard. Mother Scott Company should be fined for selling and promoting inferior products and claims that so over inflated and lies. I don't know about the "organic" soils that the previous user was ranting about but my experience with them has been great. If at any time you buy their products and don't get the results you are looking for, call and they will give you a refund. I called the other day with questions,and got right in. Great customer service in their store as well (downtown) ! I know several people that work there as well and they love their employer. I think that says a lot. read more

The Scotts Co. also manufactures Tomcat rat/mouse bait products. My husband & I researched rat bait products after discovering a rat in our yard. We specifically selected Tomcat because it advertises it is "dog-resistant & child-resistant." We placed them away from where our pets could get them but also tried to follow the packaging directions about placement. However, our youngest dog got a hold of a rat bait trap and was able to consume the poison. After almost $600 in Vet bills, our dog was finally stabilized but still had some residual effects of the poison that took some time to exit her system. The poison they use in Tomcat is extremely dangerous and difficult to treat if not discovered right away. Dictionaries describe resistant as "capable of withstanding the force or effect of; not easily changed or damaged, or not accepting of something; not affected or harmed by something;" We were so upset that the plastic box containing the poison was not resistant at all. Upon further inspection, it wouldn't take much for a young child to pull the plastic box apart and get to the rat bait either. I sent my complaint to the company. The advertising about the poisons being resistant to animals and children is extremely misleading as well as inaccurate. Beware! read more

One of my houseplants I had for 15 years and never had a problem with re-potting it. Once I used this moisture control miracle-gro - it's gone and there's no reviving it. :( read more

Used the grass seed for sun and shade with turf builder. After 2 weeks still don't have one blade of grass coming up. No expiration date on bag and it doesn't say how long it takes before you see results. Called Scotts and was on hold for a little less then two hours. This is horrible customer service. Never in my life will I buy Scotts products. Now I have to reloosen the soil and plant some real grass seed. They also said it could take 28 days to germinate-hey Scotts we only have three months of summer. Horrible products and awful customer service!!! read more
