I had to go to the ER yesterday due to extreme pain and swelling in my knee. I drove here from Oceanside because our local hospital is really bad. I love that they do everything while you're waiting to get in a room. I had x rays then a CT scan, an ultrasound and bloodwork. By the time I got to the back the dr had all of my results. The Dr was honestly amazing. He sat down and wanted to know how he could help me and actually listened. He explained things so I could understand and didn't rush me. His bedside manner was the very best. I could go on and on about how great he was. His name is Dr. Bret Winners. My nurse was Austin and he was just as amazing. They were very busy yet took all the time Ì needed. I never felt rushed. Or like I was asking too many questions. Austin went above and beyond to help me and I so appreciate him! I wish I remembered everyone's name but sadly I dont. They all deserve recognition. All of the techs and transporters were also so kind and helpful. Truly amazing people work there. I recently visited Scripps Emergency Room after crushing my finger in a car door, resulting in a fractured fingertip. While I was in a lot of pain, I also understood there are patients with far more critical emergencies, so I was prepared for a long wait. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised. From arrival to X-rays, diagnosis, pain medication, splinting, and a prescription, I was in and out in about two hours. The intake process was efficient, and I especially appreciated that the staff prioritized getting me evaluated and comfortable before collecting my insurance information. That patient-first approach spoke volumes. Dr. Subramani was kind and took the time to explain my injury and treatment plan. To top it off, I received a follow-up phone call afterward to check on my recovery, which was an unexpected and much-appreciated touch. Emergency rooms often get a reputation for long waits and impersonal care, but my experience was the opposite. I'm grateful to Dr. Subramani and the entire team for providing such efficient, compassionate care during a painful experience. Highly recommend. read more

My husband and I went to to Scripps, Encinitas on Tuesday, July 20, 2026. We entered via the Emergency Room. Dr. Bret Winners came in to speak with us regarding my husband's (M. Emge) situation. We were amazed at his demeanor. He is an excellent physician with an exceptional style in interacting with his patients. MD John N. was awesome !! I came in 6/9/2026 @ 8:30pm. Sometime in between 2am - 6am I had another MD assist me. I was not fond of him, totally ignore my pain level of 9. Anyway I get woke n up discharged with no heads up and the assistant nurse guy tall linky dude deep voice was not cool at all. He ripped the tape from my IV off which hurt and let my arm bleed without putting pressure to it. As he walked off to get gauzes as my arm bleed into the sheets I'm like wtf man!! He was not professional at all. Idk if he hated his job or was tired !! And kept ignoring the fact I was still in pain. So I left to cafeteria walking in pain order food and food is cost by the weight got an egg, bacon, cheese, potato and no potatoes in the burrito.The burrito was 15$ not worth it. Dr. Subramani is incredibly thorough with my medical history and always ensures the right tests are ordered to give an accurate diagnosis. On my recent Sunday morning visit, there was no wait at all. I was brought back to a room almost immediately, and my nurse, Austyn, was fantastic--attentive, compassionate, and skilled with my IV. I always feel like I'm in great hands at Scripps! read more

Reporting Dr. Kotter immediately to Scripps, and the CA Medical Board for refusal of Vascular evaluation and beach of standard care. I came to Scripps ER with an active referral from my primary care physician for surgical removal of a lipoma. My symptoms are urgent (complete numbness and tingling across my entire upper back, progressing up my neck and down both arms, along with sharp pains in my neck and head.) I informed Dr. Kotter of my concerns for both nerve and possible vessel compression. I also shared that my last two D-dimer results were significantly elevated (1,587 ng/mL FEU and 991 ng/mL FEU: * A repeat D-dimer test * A CT scan with contrast or CT angiogram to evaluate for vessel compression Both requests were declined by Dr. Kotter. Only basic bloodwork, and a non-contrast CT was ordered, which cannot adequately assess blood vessels. The logical call would be an MRI or CT for nerves and contrast-based imaging for vessels, plus a repeat D-dimer...instead of only a non-contrast CT. This decision risks missing a time-sensitive diagnosis such as vessel blockage, clot, or combined nerve and vessel compression, and represents a potential deviation from the standard of care. This is the kicker! Dr. Kotter stated there are "no important blood vessels to worry about in the back; the ones to worry about are in the front," which is medically inaccurate as the back of the neck and upper back contain vertebral arteries, deep cervical veins, and other clinically significant vessels. I also requested that these refusals and my worsening symptoms be documented in my chart with full clinical reasoning. Documentation was not completed during my visit, and I was told notes would be made & reflected in my chart by Dr. Kotter "in 24-48 hours." Dr. Kotter agreed to document her decision and clinical reasoning behind declining the tests. I left the hospital feeling my symptoms and concerns were not taken seriously and that urgent vascular and neurological risks were not fully evaluated. Thank you Ryan/Jared for being kind. I recently gave birth at this hospital I know they have active renovations happening upstairs for their new L&d flood which I hear will be beautiful, and amazing according to all the nurses and staff. I can see why people say some stuff is outdated. The bed didn't always work, and the bathroom sink was clogged the whole time. I had really nice nurses. The pediatricians I met with were not the kindest and honestly shouldn't be working with children let alone babies. Besides that the food was actually really good, their breakfast was delicious. The eggs were made to order and fresh. The beds are really uncomfortable and if you are hungry in the middle of the night the vending machine is falling so bring plenty of snacks. No microwave in the room but there is one in the lobby Besides that the aftercare was really nice, and all the staff had really good bedside manner. I entered the ER on July 5, 2026. I was admitted for about a week. The worst part of the experience was the first nurse I was assigned, "Vanessa." She was very rude and refused to help me when I needed water for severe dehydration. She said I need to have an IV in order to receive water. I again asked to have water and she said No, and then laughed at me. I beleive that VANESSA should not be allowed to be around patients. I had an unfortunate experience of being hit by a car as a pedestrian and so I was treated to staying here for 2.5 days and getting an urgent orthopedic surgery. The staff is very professional and efficient. They communicate well and have a good use of technology. At every bedside, there is an iPad that each patient can use to communicate with the nursing team, order food and get care. My biggest complaint was that the patient rooms are shared and so it's only a thin curtain that separates one person from the next bedside. I had the misfortune of being paired with a very nice, but very loud lady. She was hard of hearing and had no clue that the videos she was playing on her phone at 1 am were disturbing..... The food was surprisingly decent. The hospital offers a menu type system that is available throughout the day. My medical providers were communicative and professional. I had concerns about the methods used for orthopedic surgery and for the anesthesia. I had detailed discussions with the orthopedist (Dr. Andry) and with the anesthesiologist (Dr. Pham) The nurses were respectful of my wishes when I refused needless "routine" blood draws at 6 am. I'm also thankful that all providers did not try to push narcotic pain relievers - no more pill pushers! read more

My 95 year old father was transported to this hospital by ambulance after suffering from extreme internal bleeding. When admitted to a room, several people assisted him into a gown and then the bed. One of the staff asked him if he wanted to put his wallet in the hospital safe. He thus handed over his wallet to someone in the room. Upon discharge, he asked them to retrieve his wallet from the safe. Guess what? The wallet was not in the safe. Instead it appeared, sans about $750 in cash, in his personal bag with his bloodied clothing. There obviously is a thief working there. An investigation has been launched by the hospital, but it seems like a half-hearted effort. A hospital should be a safe place for the ill people. Instead he literally got robbed. read more

My husband was assigned room 219A after having a pacemaker implanted. The guy in 219B was horrible--he cussed out every one of the staff that came in there; he called the nurses every five minutes to come into the room; he dropped f bombs loudly and constantly; he peed on the floor at least three times. This was in six hours. Basically the guy was nuts. I don't know what was wrong with him, but it was not a good way to try and recover. And of course he had his TV as loud as it would go. I asked two nurses if he was tied down or something, and they said no. I was in total fear of what he would do to my husband or me based on his anger levels. We had one hour of peace, after he received his morphine that he had been yelling and screaming about. But the best is--the guy got moved to one of the private rooms so he couldn't bother other people......So moral of the story, act crazy and you get a private room instead of these ridiculous shared rooms. BTW--the iPads in the rooms for you to order food? What rooms were these? Room 219 had no iPads. Didn't even have a phone. Had to ask someone at the nurses station to order food for my husband. And the QR code in the menu didn't work either. Way to go Scripps!! I just hope that this review doesn't result in my husband getting terrible care--but I want to let everyone know that if they have a choice, don't choose this hospital. You aren't safe and you can't rest because of the nuts they put in your room. read more

I've been going to this hospital for decades. The ER is very organized. The triage nurses handle patients with great care. Obviously they don't have enough beds with the remodel going on. They still manage to get you the tests you need, and then provide care accordingly. I even saw the Chaplain empty the trash in the ER waiting room. The only issue I have is the lack of decent snacks or drink choices (vending) available while you're there for hours! The ER docs seem stretched thin, but do an excellent job. read more

If I could give them a gazillion stars I would. In late Jan. I experienced some stomach pain. It got worse and we had paramedics take me to the hospital's emergency area. I immediately was tested and diagnosed with severe gut issues which required immediate surgery which due to complications lasted three days. The surgery was successful and after 1 week in intensive care and a month in hospital, I'm as good as new. The team (from Doctors,nurses and techs) saved my life. It's weird to say be they did. EVERYONE we (my family and loved ones) were treated so well and with compassion that I really missed them. I wish I could point out one particular person but I can't. They were all wonderful. From Doctors who checked daily, Nurses who worked tireless down to maintenance people who were so polite and good at their job. I stayed here (1st floor) from 12.23rd until Dec 31st. I am about 62 years, good health, this was my very first stay in any hospital and I must say I could have not found any better hospital. Everybody was so nice, compassionate and accomadating, from Doctors to nurses and all other staff. My complaint is directed towards Ally, a nurse in the out-patient services dept., and her lack of communication skills. My mother had surgery today with Dr. Wood for 3-4 hrs. After her procedure, I received several calls from staff and then no calls until my mother called around 5. There was a space from 12-5 p.m. receiving no updates on my mother. That's right folks, my mother did the job of the nurses. One of those nurses was the last nurse, Ally. She never called to update what was going on post-op in the recovery room, nothing. She was the one that discharged my mother at the end. P.S. Ally don't tap and point to something on the discharge paperwork and expect me to know what it is that i'm signing. Open your mouth and explain. It was pure laziness on her part. Also lay off on the perfume. It ended up being longer than I expected from the original 2-3 p.m. discharge window the nurses originally said. My mother didn't get discharged until 7-7:30 p.m. read more

I have a dear friend, a local CA physician mind you, who came in to the ER with severe sepsis. She was given a chief complaint of "anxiety", and waited in the ER for three hours before an IV for hydration and antibiotics were given and a physician saw her. She was yelled at by nurses in the ER about her "anxiety" upsetting others in the waiting room, and had security called on her because she was shaking on the floor (rigors) and screaming for help as she felt like she was dying (which she could have). Finally, when the ACTUAL PHYSICIAN saw her, he apologized profusely. She was admitted to the ICU and eventually transferred to a much better hospital for adequate and non-negligent care. This was a profound case of gender bias, abuse of acutely ill patients, and negligence. This woman is a full fledged MD for crying out loud, who happened to be cared for by her own previous students at the hospital she transferred too. Along with over 11,000 other physician women who love this strong US healthcare leader, we have encouraged her to lawyer up, subpoena the video footage (if not already destroyed by the hospital), and report to JCAHO, state board of nursing, and the state hospital association. Grotesque. If this happens to physicians, imagine the negligence and abuse of those without that level of knowledge and training. read more

I came to this ER late on a Saturday evening in the grips of the worst case of what turned out to be food borne illness that I have ever experienced, and everyone was so kind and attentive to me. I was seen straightaway because of the severity of my symptoms, I was placed in a room and well taken care of. I was so dehydrated I needed two bags of fluid, and multiple pushes of anti-emetics. Dr. Bessler (I think!) recommended an abdominal CT scan with contrast (my first), and every single person involved was just as friendly and kind as can be. I've since fully recovered, but I felt compelled to leave this review because my experience could not have been better. Thank you to everyone in the ER. read more

I would not recommend this ER. A family member came in with chest pain, and at first the doctor considered sending her home. Only after reviewing the tests again did he acknowledge it was a cardiac event and apologized for the oversight. We felt communication and bedside manner were poor. When we asked to transfer to Scripps La Jolla, our request was initially declined. Some staff came across as dismissive and lacking compassion, which added to our frustration. Fortunately, once we escalated, we were transferred to La Jolla, where the care and communication were excellent. Bottom line: If you need cardiac care, go straight to Scripps La Jolla. If you end up at Encinitas, be ready to advocate strongly for yourself. read more

Putting the patient first and providing quality care would obviously not include charging $1,708 for the futile emergency room visit summarized below. ER and ophthalmologist visit summaries: On a quiet Friday morning on January 10, 2025 at 8 AM, I checked into the empty emergency room seeking care for an eye poke. I was quickly placed in an emergency room bay. However, I waited in vain for 40 minutes while the staff attempted to locate a vision test chart. Because the staff could not find the vision test chart and the office of Scripps ophthalmologist was now open, I called that office and was very fortunate to secure an immediate appointment. Within 10 minutes of arrival, it was determined that the poke had not resulted in eye damage. Scripps Mission: The Scripps website states that "Scripps strives to provide superior health service ...and make a positive measurable difference in the health of individuals... we serve." Basis for disputing the ER charge: The charge for my ophthalmologist immediate expert care was only $307 versus the $1,708 charge for the ER visit that provided no care. Leaving an ER that could not provide care in order to get immediate and expert care from a Scripps ophthalmologist was a sensible and necessary action in my best interest. Billing me for this inefficacious emergency room visit is clearly not consistent with Scripps Values of "putting the patient first" with quality care nor with Scripps Mission to "make a positive measurable difference in the health of individuals... we serve." Therefore, I petitioned that the ER charges be rescinded. Scripps refused to amend the charges. read more

I truly cannot say enough amazing things about this hospital. I've been admitted twice in the past 6 months due to a neurological disorder. Both times, the nurses, doctors, social workers, and techs have been nothing short of incredibly helpful, kind and compassionate. Paramedics took me to the emergency room and was assigned a room. A male nurse said he had to check me for bruises but I was there for extreme high blood pressure due to esophageal pressure that was really painful. While n the room on the weekend of 5/16/2025 A female nurse assistant said they needed a urine sample but instead of a sterile jar they asked me to pee in the toilet and collect urine from the receptacle on the toilet I thought that was strange when I had to ask for a clean wipe for a clean specimen. Note paramedics gave me delated for the pain in my chest with a blood pressure of 199/108. Not long after this male nurse said he had to check me for bruises when I said I had none. He pulled down my underwear and took a picture of my privates with his cell phone. A female nurse was also there he then checked between my toes which by then I figured out they thought I did drugs. I was also scheduled for abdominal surgery at Scripps Green on that Monday. I feel violated and have no history of drug use. All of which is in my portal for Scripps. Two weeks prior my Dr visit with my kidney Dr showed extremely high blood pressure and after seeing urgent care they did a c-scan to reaffirm diverticulitis and paramedics were called to take me to Scripps Er Encinitas. I spent the night and my blood pressure was all over the place. I got good care until they moved me next to another patient just a few er rooms down who kept gagging and screaming. Another nurse asked me if I wanted to go home who was gruff and obviously did want me to go home so I said yes. After that I had to go to Scripps Green for five days and surgery was scheduled for May 19th. Scripps Green was awesome. I'm appalled by the two visits to Scripps Encinitas. read more
