I've gone to her for several cuts now, and I'm so excited to say I've finally found someone I trust with my hair (after moving to the area 4 years ago and struggling to find someone). When I first saw her, I wanted to cut quite a bit off. I'd been letting it grow out for my wedding, but after I got married I was ready for a change. I came to her with a vision, and she executed it beautifully! We also talked about doing a fun color, and she's walked me through that and what she feels would be best, so hopefully we can do that one day soon! I can't even express how extremely elated I am due to the experience I had at Scruples Hair Salon with Rosa (the owner). The salon is well-kept and all the staff members are all friendly, professional, and accommodating. To give you a little background, I've been trying to go blonde for the past year or so. I've gone to SEVERAL high-end salons that have overcharged me for subpar work. I really wish I took a picture of what my hair looked like before, because what Rosa did was the work of a god (it sounds extreme, but it's so true). She corrected the plethora of colors I had on my head and fixed my choppy haircut. For the first time in my life, I walked out of a salon confident, satisfied, and feeling like my hair was complete perfection! Called a day in advance to make an appointment & boy, was I surprised! Going in, the staff greeted me and my mother who decided to accompany me. Very friendly clientele made her feel welcomed! I was expecting an ordinary haircut, but my hairdresser, Ashley, made me fall in love with my hair all over again. I've been to a few different salons in the Perth Amboy/Woodbridge area & decided to try something new. She was very delicate yet experienced, giving me advice to maintain healthy hair. Ashley was also considerate when it came to cutting my hair, remembering my hair type/texture, while remembering what I was looking for! Many prior hairdressers have cut my hair far too short, add too many layers, or just don't see my vision. Ashley did a fantastic job on my hair at Scruples. I came in for a highlight touch-up and a Brazilian Blow-out (my first time ever having one). The highlights came out absolutely beautifully. The Brazillian Blow-out exceeded my expectations. I was initially thinking it was going to just de-frizz and smooth my hair, but it did so much more than that. It looks beautifully sleek and now when I dry my hair it stays that way after showing! For someone with a busy lifestyle, it certainly saves me so much time in my daily routine. I chose this salon because it was highly rated on Yelp. I'm only writing this review because I tried on several occasions to contact the salon to resolve my issues, but they never followed up with me. I had a Brazilian Blowout done here at the end of July. I have had several Brazilian and Keratin treatments done, and I've never had such disappointing results. My hair was extremely flat with zero body for the first two weeks. It would also become extremely oily the day after washing. I usually wash my hair every third day, so this was maddening to me. I was also experiencing a lot of shedding which is uncharacteristic of getting this treatment done on top of a haircut. The stylist pulled very hard when flat ironing the treatment into my hair. This made my scalp irritated for several days and is probably the reason for the unusual shedding. I noticed a small bald spot right behind my hairline on the right side. I didn't say anything to the stylist about the pulling, I figured he needed to pull that hard. That being said, it was not a pleasant feeling. The stylist told me to call him after I'd washed my hair to let him know how the treatment had set. I called about five days later, but It took him several days to respond. At the two week mark, he'd finally called me back and I'd very politely voiced my concerns and he'd said that he "probably used too much of the product in my hair, which would explain the oiliness and lack of volume. On the bright side, having used too much product would likely make the Blowout last longer. He also said that the volume should return within a couple of weeks." The volume did return about a week later, but it brought with it frizziness. The first time my hair frizzed out was on a day it was barely even humid. It's become frizzy on several occasions since. Whether humid or not, there is supposed to be zero frizz - that's the whole point of having this process done. I was very upset at this point. The Brazilian Blowout lasts at least 12 weeks and I've been able to stretch them out to 5-6 months washing my hair twice a week, only using the official Brazilian Blowout hair care products. I'd called the salon to speak to the owner this time. She was unavailable so I left a message. She did not return my call. I called again two days later but she was on vacation. I'd explained my concerns to the employee with whom I spoke. She seemed very compassionate and assured me that she would have the owner call me back and that she would likely redo the treatment for me. Almost three weeks later, I still haven't received a call back. I would have never written this negative review if the owner had cared enough about the reputation of her business and the integrity of her products to call me back and address my concerns. I am extremely disappointed that I spent over $300 on the Blowout and hair products and did not get even close to the desired results. It's unfortunate because had the owner been proactive and contacted me, I'd have definitely returned to the salon and given them more business from my friends and family. I've included pictures of my hair when it gets frizzy. Anyone who has ever had a Brazilian Blowout knows that this is unacceptable for three weeks in. Honestly, my hair was in better condition before getting this treatment done. read more

Stay away from this place. If you want pictures of how they damage my hair message me. They are dishonest and wants to take only your money. I went there with a healthy hair and left with my hair many different colors and it was fried dead beyond repairs. This was damage by Vince and when I contacted the owner to get reimbursed she first hide and didn't response to my many messages, went I went there and confront it her she just lied some more telling me that she was going to repair my hair giving some miraculous product which she never did. I wanted to get a balayage look and because the reviews for Rosa were so good, I decided to go with her. I like to know upfront what I'm going to pay so I made an appointment for a consultation. She made me wait 45 minutes because she was with another customer. That should've been been my first sign to run. I mean why make an appt if you're going to have potential customers sit and watch as you laugh and joke with your customer. Regardless I stuck it out. After discussing what I was looking for, she advised me it was going to cost $195. A bit expensive considering I wasn't getting a haircut or special treatments and the length is literally above my shoulders but again went with it. Two weeks later I show up for my appt. Thankfully my wait was only about 15 minutes. We again went over what I wanted at which point she started suggesting highlights which was not what I was looking for. After a bit of back and forth, she reluctantly said she'd go with my original look. At this point in the review I'm going to be honest that everything in me told me again - run! But I did not. I'm sure you guys can see where this is going. By the end of my appt I had anything but a balayage look but rather a bunch of highlights that looked like from the '90's. I wanted to cry. I think she saw it in my face bc she kept telling, it asking how great it looked. Trying not to be rude I just went with since the damage was already done. Now if that's not bad enough, when I get to the register to pay (cash is the only way to avoid tax and visa fees) the girl hits me with a bill of $300! No lie! I tell her there must be some mistake bc I was here a few weeks ago and was quoted $195! For starters I had only brought what she told me, plus tips and I believe had an extra $20. Rosa and the guy that works there come to the reception area and Rosa starts to detail how she had to use this product and that product to lighten my hair to get it to the color I wanted etc. And as annoyed as I was I tried to maintain my composure and reason with her. She wasn't aggressive or anything and eventually said fine then u can pay me whatever you have. Her and the guy looked at each other rolling their eyes but what was I going to do? They sent me to a nearby 7-11 to an ATM but I didn't have that type of money to withdraw regardless. I was not only displeased with the way my hair came out but completely embarrassed as other customers heard what was going on. I ended up paying the $195 and gave tips to the shampoo girl and Rosa. Yes I know sounds crazy but I've been in the service industry and although she's the owner, I just don't feel right not tipping. In the end, I wouldn't recommend this place. I had just got back from Kean university and I noticed my hair needed to be done so I thought I would go back to Scruples in Woodbridge because I had been there a long time ago. Big Mistake! I asked the woman to give me a blonde color which was a bit LIGHTER then I had which I figured was a no big deal since they are professionals. Well, she put the color into my hair which for some reason was only in my hair for 10 mins then proceeded to wash it out then she put more in to the roots after she took it out which she left in for 15 mins. Then, she after that cut my hair. The cut was good but I left disappointed greatly because my hair is now dark. The whole two hours there I spent 80 dollars. She then wanted if I didn't like it to do highlights for an additional 55 dollars. I said forget it because if she could not get the color right then how would she get the highlights right? Then to spent 135 dollars for someone to screw up your hair is ridiculous. Needless to say, I hate my hair and wished I had never gone to that salon. I should have waited to go to my other lady who knows how to do hair. This was a nightmare. I will never go back again. read more

I went to scruples for the first time a few months ago. I knew they'd been there for a long time so decided to try them out. I'm never going to my old hair place again!! I am one to put off getting my hair done, until I can't even run a comb through it. Anyway, I love the fact that they take credit cards!! That was a must for my new hair salon. When I went for the first time I was assigned Heather. She was so nice and I have to say gentle. I've had my hair washed and worked on where they were too rough. That was a reason in itself I'm going back! She made my hair really soft too!. Heather explained pricing, and didn't try to sell anything extra. Was great she took into consideration what I was looking for, and didn't try to do whatever she wanted. She showed me the colors and I trusted her judgement. Liked the fact also that they made note of the color used for next time. I said I don't come often, but I'll be back. I'm planning on making an appointment hopefully for this week. All I can say is that after 18 years of highlights, lowlights, and millions of pictures of what I liked....I've NEVER had anyone come close to what I wanted. As I read on another review (sorry to steal)...but Rosa is truly a HAIR DOCTOR...or master! She worked tirelessly to give me red carpet treatment and followed up days later to make sure I was happy. You don't find people who LOVE what they do often and she put her home life, family and cute little princess :) on hold to undo years of damage in fixing my long unruly hair. She got rid of brassy gold, frizzy, dead ends and transformed my color into something I thought I would never see. I am in LOVE with my hair again and can't begin to explain how grateful I am for all of her hard work. Where have you been all my life, Rosa??!! Don't waste another minute looking anywhere else!
