I am sitting in my room on the last night of my stay here at Scuba Club Cozumel and I wish I had better things to say about this place. I honestly do not understand how this place is so highly rated because 1) the staff are rude, 2) the food varies from decent to mediocre, 3) the dining schedule is very restricted, and 4) when they cancel dive outings, they don't bother to let you know. The only saving graces of this place are the boat crews and dive masters, who were superb, and a couple of wait staff who were on their game. Hence, 2 stars instead of 1.
We booked this trip through our local dive shop. It was a great deal, and we were really excited about our dive vacation. But, despite the fact that our local dive shop had been planning trips to this place for years, you wouldn't know it by how the "resort" treated us. To begin, our flight was delayed, so we arrived about 10 minutes after the dive shop at Scuba Club closed. Did they stay open a little later to accommodate the eleven people arriving at their door? Of course not. So, we had to get up two hours before our first morning dive to beat the rush to sign up with the dive shop, get all our gear and weights in order, etc. Then, to top it off, all the dive shop staff seemed annoyed that we were bothering them with our questions. What's up with that? And the expected friendly greetings? Not once. Furthermore, I wish I could say that it was just an aberration; that it was just me. But, many of our fellow guests voiced similar dissatisfaction over the same things.
Now, let's talk about the meals. They have set breakfast, lunch, and dinner times, "with coffee available all day." If you happen to be lounging at the pool, forget about them asking you if you want a beverage. Despite the fact that the restaurant is staffed all day, they will only begrudgingly get you a drink if you can hunt someone down. Now, the problem with their restaurant is that it's not big enough to accommodate all the guests at once, so a huge line forms because everyone is headed out and coming back from dives within a few minutes of each other. So, despite the fact that we paid for all our meals at this place, we ate literally half our meals in town because we didn't feel like waiting around to eat so-so food.
Then, there's the cancelled dive trips: terrible wind, can't be helped. I get that. But come on, they can't send their folks out to the rooms to let people know? They can't slide a note under the door? They can't post something somewhere. Then, when you ask what's up with the dive plans, they look at you like you're the biggest jerk for even asking. Need extra weights? How dare you take them away from their paperwork to look for more weights! And, did they ever offer to make up the dives by taking us out on an afternoon boat? Nope. So, that bad weather netted Scuba Club Cozumel a nice chunk of change, what with all the money they saved by not having to pay their boat crews, dive masters, or to fuel their boats.
I have always found Mexican service to be top notch, and that is what I expect. More so, considering that I am fluent in Spanish, which always gets me friendly service. That was not to be found here. From the front desk to the restaurant to the dive shop, the friendly customer service I was expecting was severely lacking at this establishment. I guess they figure that their low prices justify shoddy service.
Now, to the last straw: I am in my room in bed at about 9:45 p.m. when a staff member tells me I am being, literally, summoned to the front desk. Why, I asked him. He has no idea. So, annoyed, I put some clothes, went down to the front desk, and asked why they called for me. They responded with, "We wanted you to settle your bill, since you're leaving early tomorrow." Mind you, they were going to be open tomorrow morning before I left. They told me as I walk away, "You can drop off your keys here tomorrow." Then, why the *!%# couldn't I pay my bill tomorrow morning before I left?
So, bottom line: this place is awful. If you are planning your dive trip to Cozumel, stay somewhere else. You have plenty of choices, and from what I've experienced, paying a bit extra is worth it. I will not be back here, that is certain. read more
